    3. Hi List, Just moving house and found my treasure chest of nostalgia from Strathavon Guest House Wyong and with the current changes to employment and recent "Pub" discussions, thought this might interest some. 1912 - Miss MARTIN - House Keeper - 10/- a week + board 1930 - Miss McFADDEN - first hired aged 14 - cook/waitress/housemaid/laundress - 30/- a week 1940's + RILEY, DENNIS, SOYA, LANGFORD, SHERBERT, MCDONALD, BUTLER, SCHOFIELD, MITCHELL and many more, wages averaging about 2 to 3 pound a week, most employees resided on the property in staff quarters and were sometimes permitted to join guests for drinks, but not permitted to use the cement pool or other guest's facilities. (not while the boss was around anyway), all staff were to attend work in stiffly starched uniforms with hair neat and tidy and all meals were to be eaten at the kitchen table. (Staff were provided with all meals) A weeks holiday cost 3 pound 5 shillings and this included a DELUXE ROOM with HOT & COLD RUNNING WATER. Guests were warned that water from the tap was a bit discoloured, as it was town water, but if they preferred they could drink the usual tank water as it was safe. (water was actually supplied from a large well on the property) GUEST'S RULES: Septic Sewer - no disinfectants or other matter to be used as this will disrupt the service....(lol - wonder what was permitted to go in it then ?) Piano - Thumping will NOT be tolerated and the organ must NOT be uncovered. Horse Riding - 10/- an hour and ride at your own risk. That's it for now, I have not listed Christian names, but if anyone is interested in Ancestors who were past staff (1912 +) please email off list. Regards Colleen
