Hello Barbara & List I found the following in the 1871 & 1881 Census for England. It sounds very much like your Orlando's family. It is possible that Orlando went to Stroud district in NSW when he first came to Australia and that is why his family thought he had been born there! It is such an unusual name and I could not see a death of a William or Sarah Thornber (Orlando's parents) in NSWBDM which could indicate that Orland immigrated either as a single man or with a new bride between 1871 and 1876. I could only see the births of Bertha & Charles in 1876; Alice in 1881; Willie in 1883 and Percy in 1886 in NSWBDM. I could not find a marriage for an Orlando Thornber in NSWBDM or in the UKBDM site. I did find a marriage of a William Thornber to Sarah Storey in the Burnley Register Office (Lancashire) in 1849 in the UKBDM site. The 1871 Census info: William Thornber, 42yrs. Born c1829 in Sabden, Lancashire. Head. Married. Bread maker. Sarah <Thornber>, 45yrs. Born c1826 in Padiham. Lancashire. Wife. Married. Cotton weaver. Orlando Thornber, 19yrs. Born c1852 in Padiham, Lancs. Son. Single. Cotton weaver. Ebenezer Thornber, 14yrs. Born c1856 in Padiham, Lancs. Son. Single. Cotton Weaver. Sarah A. Thornber, 7yrs. Born c1864 in Padiham, Lancs. Daughter. Scholar. The family were living in a single dwelling at 6 Wellington Street, New Accrington, Lancashire. The 1881 Census info: William Thornber. 52yrs. Born c1829 in Sabden, Lancs. Head. Married. Cotton weaver. I could not find his wife, Sarah and he may have been a widow even though it says he was married. Sarah A. Thornber. 17yrs. Born c1864 in Padiham, Lancs. Daughter. Single. Cotton weaver. They were living at 12 (Ightenhill ?) Street, Padiham, Lancs. Also the separate household of: Ebenezer Thornber. 25yrs. Born c1856 in Padiham, Lancs. Head. Married. Cotton weaver. Emma <Thornber>. 24yrs. Born c1857 in Stockport, Cheshire. Wife. Married. Cotton spinner. The family were living in Cheadle. Orlando Thornber was not found in the 1881, 1891 or 1901 Censuses (on-line). I also found the death of William Thornber, age 72yrs. Registered in Burnley district, lancs. in the September qtr of 1901. Hope this is your family Regards Wendy McKenzie PS if you think this is your family I can send you links to view the census info for a 24hour period ----- Original Message ----- From: "Barbara B." <bbanar@tpg.com.au> To: <AUS-NSW-CENTRAL-COAST-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 15, 2005 11:42 PM Subject: [ANCC] Thornber > Hi List, > > I would like to post my interest which is Orlando Thornber. > Orlando was my Great Grandfather, and going by his death certificate he > was born in Stroud, NSW in 1849. > His father was William Thornber and his mother was Sarah Story. > His wife was named Eliza, and they had five children named: > Bertha, Charles, Alice, Willie and Percy. > > Unfortunately, I have been unable to find the registration of his birth in > NSW nor in the UK. > Any thoughts in how I may trace this gentleman would be greatly > appreciated. > > Thank you, > Barbara/Queensland > > > ==== AUS-NSW-CENTRAL-COAST Mailing List ==== > For other AUS mailing lists check out: > http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/AUS > > ============================== > Search the US Census Collection.
