Does anyone know what became of these old pubs in the Cooranbong area ? I went for a drive around there a while ago and I can't remember seeing any pubs at all....which I must say I thought was very odd......almost un-Australian in fact ! My interest stems from an ancestor of mine, John Taaffe, of Swansea who had a run in with Edward H Hargraves. I heard that there was even a court appearance after an incident at a Cooranbong hotel (don't know which one). BTW - I think John Taaffe might have been a licencee of a pub at Swansea. Would anyone have any information on that ? regards, David G Dundon wrote On 31/03/06 07:03 AM,: > Thanks for typing up those refs from 'Reid's Mistake' by K. Clouten, > Margaret. Hello David, John Taaffe is mentioned briefly in "Lake Macquarie: Past and Present" published by LMc City Council in 1958, but guess you have seen that small book? Taaffe is also mentioned a number of times in the Brisbane Water Bench Books and Court Cases: 1826-74 (see Gosford City Library local studies sections for microfilm or the index prepared and published by Gosford Local History Study Group - now defunct - under the title 'Historical Records of the Central Coast of NSW' in 1990. This book is now doubt to be located in a number of libraries. In his book "Blue Gum Flat to Budegewoi", the late Charles Swancott mentioned on page 207, the charging on 14.2.1861 of Edward John Hargraves of Bungaree Norah (Noraville) with shooting a mare on the property of John Taaffe. Evidence was given in the case by James Frost of Cabbage Tree, James Armitage of Lake Macquarie, James Batchelor of Lake Macquarie, James Freeman Jr of Wyee, Thomas Boyd of Lake Macquarie and Frederick Chaney of Lake Macquarie. Details of the case are then related. Edward John Hargraves was the son of Edward Hammond Hargraves, the man whose name is connected with the discovery of payable gold in NSW. Best wishes, Gwen
Thanks, Gwen, you are correct, I do have my own copy of Reid's Mistake and am currently rereading it !! PamC (nee COULTER) Blue Mtns, NSW.
