Hi Marg and list members, I am currently researching my convict 4xg grandfather John RYAN who was transported from Ireland on the ship Larkins in 1829. John was assigned to William Cape of Brisbane Water. Thanks to Marg I've learned a bit more about William Cape and his property at what is now known as Wyong. John RYAN received his Ticket of Leave in 1834 and he requested permission for his wife and family to join him in the Colony. His request was granted and his wife Nancy (nee Lucas) and their three daughters, Catherine, Margaret and Mary arrived in Sydney in June 1836 aboard the ship Thomas Harrison. John Ryan received his Certificate of Freedom in November 1836 and from this date I cannot locate any further information on him or Nancy. From the Colonial Secretary's correspondence I've learned that the Magistrate of Brisbane Water was notified by letter that John RYAN's family were waiting for him in Sydney. This letter was sent a week after Nancy and the girls arrived. On 1st July 1936 Nancy was still waiting for word of her husband, he had not yet come to meet her and she was moved from the ship to Hyde Park Barracks to await her fate. I haven't been able to locate the letter sent to the Magistrate at Brisbane Water nor any subsequent correspondence from him regarding John RYAN. I have this mental picture of Nancy and the girls still sitting at Hyde Park Barracks waiting for John Ryan to pick them up and I'd really like to get them out of there <g>. If anyone is able to offer any suggestions or check any records that may be available in the Central Coast area I would be most grateful. Best wishes, Terri.
