Sandra, You had an excellent reply as ever from Gwen Dundon, a true fount of knowledge. I am peripherally interested in SPEARS because I am a direct descendant of the John SMITH who married Louise Hillas Spears (nee Drinkwater) in 1902. It was the second marriage for both and they had no children together- just as well as he had 11 and she quite a few!! Gwen gave me a copy of a lovely photo of a Spears family double wedding in 1911 where Louise takes the centre spot. In 1992, I made contact with a David Spears who was researching the family. He gave me his business card but he is now not listed in our local phone directed though a cousin of his is. If you would like to contact me privately about making contact with him, please do so. The other thing about the SMITH/SPEARS liaison which always causes me to chuckle is the headstones of HER 2 husbands. The first husband- James H SPEARS has one of the grandest headstones you could imagine and stands in lonely splendour in the recently renovated Bradys Gully cemetery. It's quite tall, well over my head. At a discreet distance is that of my John SMITH, an unusual rectangular prism type shape with a Masonic cloth over it (in stone) which is barely 1 metre tall!!! Louise and he were only married 6 years - he died 1908 and she lived till 1940,dying at the age of 81. The rest of John Smith's family- assorted children, his parents, his in laws, his first wife are all buried at Pt Frederick and most of their headstones have survived. I always find it a bit sad that he is alone there at arms length from his predecessor!!!! Judy Gifford, researching ROGERS CAIN SMITH locally
