Judy, it was thanks to Marg Morters that I was put in contact with Helen and saw the old well in Berry Avenue. I had not heard of the (Bill) Berry farm there before, and have been meaning to contact some friends of that name to see if I can follow it up. Tortoise-like, I am still trying to clear my desk of piled up paper so that I can chase that and other items to their possible conclusion. I don't think old wells are all that out of the ordinary, but maybe most are filled in now for safety reasons. One of the old town wells (public) was uncovered briefly in William Street Gosford when the Council was doing work along that walkway quite a number of years ago. It was strongly lined with very thick planks in a square shape, and was full of VERY rich brown water. I took some photos of it at the time. The Council closed it over under the footpath and installed the bubbler at the site. It is right at the southern end of the crosswalk to Woolies. There's a plaque on it. That's plaque, not plague! Some people were horrified and thought that the bubbler was drawing water from the well. The Council hastened to assure everyone that it was well and truly connected to the town water supply. Cheers from Gwen
