    3. Dear Jenny and fellow list-ers, A GEDCOM is usually read within a genealogy program, for example, Brother's Keeper, PAF, Family Tree Maker, and others. If you don't already have a genealogy program, software can be downloaded; some are free; a useful list is given on Cora Num's site: http://www.coraweb.com.au/software.htm If you already have one of these programs, the basic method is to go to FILE and select IMPORT, then choose GEDCOM and then make appropriate choices to select and import your gedcom. NOTE: If you already have a database in your genealogy program, it would be a good idea to view your gedcom by opening a new file rather than import your gedcom data into your existing database. Our local computer group website has prepared a page of links and basic how-to and some of the links provided give step-by-step instruction on importing and exporting a gedcom. Here's the GEDCOM Page: http://www.angelfire.com/mt/forbesnewbies/gedcom.html There is also a very handy program made especially to view a gedcom: Dynamic Family Tree Compiler http://www.linktop.demon.co.uk/dftcom2/ Do hope some of this helps someone. I'm no expert but I have discovered how useful gedcoms are and would encourage others to have a go! Juliette Forbes NSW
