    1. Ship "Saucy LASS"
    2. Sue Given
    3. Hi, I am after information on a schooner that travelled between NSW and the Solomon Islands in the 1880s/1890s. At one point a sailor called Edward Woodcote Taylor West, owned a share of this ship, and later lived in Maitland until returning to England. This was 1894-1897. Any help or advice greatly appreciated. Thanks Sue in Sale, Victoria

    1. Mariner from Newcastle NSW - surname HAY
    2. Sue Given
    3. Hi, Hope I am on the right site. Is anyone looking for a master mariner called John Clarke Hay? He had a wife Euphemia nee Boyle who was deceased by 1913. He also had a daughter Euphemia Adelaide Hay who married in 1913. It would also appear he had a son David Cooke Hay who died in WWI age 18. I have a transcript of Euphemia Adelaide's marriage certificate if anyone wants it, and a couple of bits I downloaded on David as well. Have a good day. Sue in Sale, Victoria

    3. Hello Louise in Wagga, The old house at Mangrove, used in the Australian movie "Inn of the Damned" (filming for this started in late 1973, and it previewed in May 1974 at a Sydney suburban theatre), was never a Cobb and Co inn. It was a very old house which had been occupied by a succession of local pioneering families. Eventually, derelict, it was burned down. Cobb and Co did not operate in this area, although I believe one of their old coaches was brought to (or through) the district briefly in the twenties. The film was set in Gippsland at the end of the 19th century, and an authentic Cobb and Co coach was used in it. Hope you enjoyed the film - it gave me horrible nightmares! 3. Postcript re the museum at West Gosford for Darlene: Good news: the road signs re the above have just been re-erected. The August edition of the Brisbane Water Historical Society's newsletter "Cooranbean Courier" has a note in it to this effect. The signs are near the intersection of the Pacific Highway, Brisbane Water Drive and Manns Road; at the corner of Brisbane Water Drive and Corumbene Street, and just before Coles car park at West Gosford, facing traffic coming from the direction of Woy Woy. 1. CAWARRA shipwreck
    2. G Dundon
    3. To Darlene and Tony, Re your enquiry about the loss of CAWARRA. Sorry if this has gone through twice by mistake. This iron paddle steamer was wrecked on the Oyster Bank at Newcastle, NSW, on 12 July, 1866 in a terrific storm. Only one person survived from the 60 aboard. The vessel left Sydney on 11 July, bound for Rockhampton, and during that night she was overtaken by a terrible south easterly gale that had her struggling. The captain steamed her on and off the approach to Newcastle for most of the morning before attempting to cross the bar. She appeared to stop and was hit by tremendous waves which possibly extinguished her fires. Helpless, she was driven ashore. Apparently about 14 or 15 other vessels were lost in the same violent weather, and more than 100 people were drowned. Maritime historian Ronald Parsons of South Australia in his book, "Shipping Losses and Casualties concerning Australia and New Zealand" (2003) quotes the "Newcastle Chronicle" of 14.7.1866 regarding CAWARRA. There are probably websites that give more details of this wreck (also of Ronald Parsons and the Australasian Maritime Historical Society) Try the State Records Office, Sydney, for the Marine Board of Enquiry report. So now my cursisoty is getting ahead of > me - can anyone fill me in about him, etc. Darlene Below is from Gwen Dundun ....... She is having computer hassles gdundon@bigpond.net.au Hello Darlene, I believe that the sign to Henry Kendall Cottage and Historical Museum at West Gosford had to be removed. Take the Woy Woy turn off on the Pacific Highway at Brisbane Water Drive, on your right as you come down onto the flat from Kariong, then immediately hard first turn to the right. Then turn left into Henry Kendall Street and the complex is at the end of it. The museum is maintained by Brisbane Water Historical Society Inc whose pamphlet states that it is open 10 am to 3 pm on Wed/Sat/Sun, and all public and school holidays except Xmas Eve, Christmas Day and Good Friday. It is conducted totally by volunteers. The stone cottage (c1838-40) - originally called "Cooranbean" is named after the Australian poet Henry Kendall who lived there briefly in the 1870s with the owners, the Fagan family. Some of his best-known verses were written during his sojourn in the area. To mention a few: "Narrara Creek", "Names Upon a Stone" and "The Voice in the Wild Oak" (written on the nearby bank of Narara Creek where wild oaks may still be seen). A modern brick museum stands adjacent to the cottage. The grounds are ideal for a BYO picnic lunch. Best wishes, Gwen Darlene These is quite alot of info on Henry KENDALL in one of Charles SWANCOTTs book The Brisbane Water Story , part 4 Koolewong to Cooranbong His books sometimes come up for sale 2nd hand on http://www.booksandcollectibles.com.au/ > And another request - I recall reading something about the > term "cousin" which can means more than it is referred as > now... can anyone enlight me with meaning for "cousin" in > the old days, especially around 1890s.
