    3. Hi all, I have been fascinated to view and read about, each Saturday in the Daily Telegraph, historical photographs submitted by their readers. Many involving the submitter or their family. Today's is about a train accident at Parramatta, very interesting. All before my time and many of them events of which I had not heard. Just as a matter of interest are any of our members submitting any photographs? Ted Bryant

    3. Hello Listers, I was saddened to see Ken Scully's death notice in the "Central Coast Express Advocate" of Wednesday, 31 August. Ken was a journalist on the "Gosford Star" newspaper when I came to know him many years ago. He was a former editor of "The Catholic Weekly" in Sydney (in fact, editor of two newspapers and three magazines at various times). Using the pen-name John Dawes, he wrote about events in the islands north of Australia during his army service there in World War Two. He was the author or editor of more than 13 books, and had won poetry prizes, including three for verse plays. In the early 1990s, as John Dawes, Ken compiled the histories of Holy Cross Catholic Church at South Kincumber ("Towards the Future") and St Paul's Anglican Church at Kincumber ("Round About St Paul's"), much of the material having been researched and gathered by committees formed for the purpose. He was a stalwart of the St Vincent de Paul Society, and the Coast Shelter Gosford, of which he was Patron. Kenrick Scully, Knight of the Order of St Sylvester, died at his Bensville home on 28.8.2005. A requiem mass was celebrated at Holy Cross Church on Thursday, September 1. I would like to extend my sincere sympathy to his widow Norma and family. Vale, Ken. Gwen Dundon -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. 3. Hi list, Kylie Buttress from another list has worked extremely hard to create a website for family stories (just uploaded this week) and she is asking people to contribute their own family tales, it would be a great way to commence writing and let others know of your ancestors. As time goes on and more stores are added, the site will become valuable to researches and make interesting reading. As mentioned, it is only in the early stages so you have plenty of time to start writing....... www.buttress.info Regards Colleen

    3. Dear Marg Yes, some of us are still here (even though we are still silent). I send a regular list of URLs to various people and there are two or three who say thank you. It's not really necessary but nice to hear occasionally that all are appreciated. But try this for ego-building (and I know that's not what you are looking for). Recently I won a prize in a Poetry competition for an ABC magazine I subscribe to in Melbourne. I was notified of my win but before I even got my copy of the magazine I got a beautiful little booklet of my poem, hand drawn in lovely calligraphy, from an admirer in Queensland. You can only imagine how excited I was, because in a few days I also got an email from a lady in England, saying how much she'd enjoyed my work. Naturally I replied very quickly and promised to exchange a few details later. Being a bit tied up at the time, my reply was only brief but you can guess how excited I was when the phone rang just as I started to watch The New Inventors. Yes, I missed the whole show, talking to my new acquaintance from England! If you thought Family Historians talked, you should see some of these POETS! Anyhow Marg, keep up the good work. You have lots of appreciative admirers. And here's a thought for some of your tongue-tied fans: It's nice to have good manners And always do things right. Remember Please and Thank You, Good Morning and Good Night. Politeness is important – I learnt that from my mum; She'd say: "If you are naughty I'll smack you on the bum". Frank Cardiff East Gosford. Local Studies Librarian at Gosford, Geoffrey Potter, has been arranging for some very interesting items to be made available on the website. These include local photographs, land sub-divisions, and old tourist booklets. Make sure you've got time to browse - there's a lot to see, and plenty to print out for your projects! I was over at the Central Coast FHS Library last Saturday and one of our members was going thru a film of the Gosford Times newspaper for 1926 and I was doing some looking over her shoulder . I was intrigued by the number of shop ads for the large number of shops . We were wondering what the size of the population might have been to support so many and how did they get the goods to sell ?. Alot of frieght would have come up by rail . Only road access till 1945 was via Wisemans Ferry. So maybe the more bulky freight came up by sea ? Bye MargM Central Coast List Admin

    3. Hi MargM Being involved with the local Historical Centre has opened my eyes to new ways that information can be gained. With regard to the population in the Central Coast area if you happen to find one of the brochures that are tourist related for that time, normally you will find an estimate of population for the area. Example; 1967 Lake Macquarie Guide . printed by Lake Macquarie Shire Council. 'Many of the Shire's population of approximately 108,000 people, although residents of Lake Macquarie, are employed in industrial and commercial undertakings in Newcastle; thus enjoying the advantages of work in an industrial city and the peace and beauty which Nature gives their homes on the lake shores.' 'Belmont... Pleasantly situated on the Pacific Highway and the eastern bank of Lake Macquarie, 4 miles north of Swansea, is the thriving township of Belmont, with a population of 14,000.' 'Cardiff... One of the most thriving centres in Lake Macquarie Sire - both residentially and commercially - is Cardiff, with a population of approximately 20,000 situated on the Main Northern Railway line, 8 miles from Newcastle.' and in a different vein 'The cost of brick buildings range from $850 to $1000 per square, timber from $700 to $750.' Boy, let's go back 38 years and build a home. MargaretB Lake Macquarie NSW Australia
