Hello Judy, Last night I was browsing through my Kincumber Post Office History - some 4 pages of condensed information obtained many years ago from Van Cremer when he was Historical Officer for Australia Post in Sydney - and noted the name Cain. You probably are aware of this already, but your Mr W.N. Cain of East Gosford gained the contract to carry the once-weekly Gosford-Kincumber mail by horseback in 1881. Don't know how long he had the service, but he suceeded Irvine Coulter, the second holder of the contract who had taken it over from Peter Fagan in 1861. A post office had been established at Kincumber on 1 April 1859 in charge of Henry Hunter Lane whose name is recorded elsewhere as schoolmaster. This was 24 years after the opening of Gosford's first post office. These were not actual buildings, but services housed privately. Kincumber Fair is being held this Saturday, October 29 with plenty of attractions starting from 9 am in the shopping centre environs. The restored Old Post Office house - the former home of Mr and Mrs Manasseh Frost, and finally of their daughter Doris Tincknell and her husband Tom, now both deceased, will be open. It will be the starting place for several history walks during the day. Between them, Manasseh and Doris kept the post office for more than 50 years. Cheers, Gwen ---- Original Message ----- From: "The Giffos" <giffos@hotkey.net.au> To: <AUS-NSW-CENTRAL-COAST-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, October 26, 2005 4:48 PM Subject: Re: [ANCC] Old Gosford > Thanks also, Marg for these snippets. Marg, I found your old Gosford Times snippet very interesting regarding work on the Kincumber to Lloyds Wharf Road, tender from A. Davis. I wonder if "Lloyd's" was a misprint in the newspaper for "Lyde's" as old maps show a road running south from Kincumber called by this name. Lyde's Wharf on Cockle Creek opposite St Hubert's Island, was on the Daniel Egan grant (Portion 98) a property better known as Merritt's Wharf, now part of Empire Bay. The owner James F. Merrett (this spelling shows in later records) referred to his home there as being at "Old Point". The road or track referred to above followed more or less for some distance along what is now Empire Bay Drive. Who was Lyde? Does anyone know please? Best wishes, Gwen

Hi MargM, Gwen & Listers, I believe that the original stone Christ Church, East Gosford was erected by Robert Creighton. [Source of information: Geoff Potter, Local Studies Librarian, Gosford City Library]. Robert Creighton arrived in the Colony of NSW in 1842 from Ireland, with his wife and four children, William, Elizabeth, Margaret and Robert. I am descended from his eldest son, William Creighton. I don't know when the original church was built. Best wishes Wendy McKenzie

Dear Marg, Re that item from the Gosford Times of 20 October 1905 as under: " Good progress is being made with the re-erection of the old Church of England building on the West Gosford site. The addition [of] the old/new structure will be quite an adornment to the picturesque church grounds". This of course referred to old stone Christ Church which originally stood on the south-western corner of George and Webb Streets at East Gosford. In 1905 it was moved stone by stone to its present site which is next to the units at No. 1 Mann Street. It was recently restored and renamed "St Mary's". In those days it was common for people to refer to Gosford Proper as "West Gosford" - this is often seen in old Gosford newspaper reports, and can often be misleading and puzzling for readers. Best regards, Gwen
Gosford Times Friday 20 Oct 1905 The woman question A curious phrase of 'the woman question' has cropped up . What is to be done with women who interrupt public meetings ? Mr Deakin at a recent immigration meeting was persistently interrupted by two or three of these disturbers, who had apparently made up their minds to combat any favourable illusion to immigration . The chairman reminded them that admission was by ticket, and that interruption could not be allowed. Finally he threatened them with expulsion Later an official attempted to remove one of then from the hall. there was at once a 'scene' The chivalry of the meeting protested , and the fair or unfair disturber was left unmolested . Now, a female interrupter is as fatal to the success of a meeting as a male . The latter is usually amenable to the sarcasm or ridicule which public speakers keep on tap for such occasions. If this is ineffective he can be 'fired out' without ceremony . But women, as a rule, have no sense of humour and it appears they cant be 'fired out' Unless some way is discovered out of this difficulty public meetings will be best by a new terror (Were no names so dont know who these interrupters were ....... !) Good progress is being made with the re erection of the old Church of England building on the West Gosford site. The additions the old/new structure will be quite an adornment to the picturesque church grounds For painless extraction of aching teeth go to R VERVON, Dentist, Gosford MargM Central Coast List Admin
