Hi everyone, I read all the posts but don't usually have much to say, but I would like to reply to this post. My earliest Central Coast ancestor was Ebenezer JONES. Ebenezer and Elizabeth (his first wife Elizabeth Whitehouse) came to Australia 0n the "WILLIAM SHARPLES" which arrived in Sydney from Liverpool England 0n the 29th Jan 1842. Ebenezer paid 58 pounds for his family's fare.At the time of their arrival they had three children. Thomas age 9, Mary age 5, and another son Price age 3 years. Shortly after they arrived Elizabeth gave birth to another daughter who they called Elizabeth. Ebenezer was engaged by a MR MOORE a Timber merchant of Moore Place to labour with rations at a rate to be determined in proportion to labour in the Brisbane Waters area of NSW. From this ship's record it would appear that Ebenezer settled in the Brisbane Waters area in 1842. Ebenezer is my GGG Grandfather from his second wife Ellen Elizabeth CHALLIS. His children from that marriage were, Maria Jane JONES (my ancestor), Edward Thomas, Emma and William F. Ebenezer was killed in 1866 when a tree fell on him. Maria Jane JONES married Thomas COLLINS at East Gosford 19th November 1877. They had 9 children. From what I know of Thomas COLLINS he lead an interesting life and it seems he fathered children to at least 2 other women at the same time that he was married to Maria. Thomas and Ebenezer were both involved in the logging industry. regards, Kay Vinson
Hi Marg, I can not claim to have Ancestors that were one of the first to settle on the Central Coast, but I must say I was thrilled to open the Central Coast Express on Friday to find my father in-law (Mick Wells) in a Lisarow School photo dated 1933. It was in conjunction with the History of the Lisarow General Store and we were able to phone the store's new owners and let them know the names of many of the grade 4 students, not sure if it made me feel excited or "Old". Our first ancestors to arrive on the Central Coast were MARY ANN WELLS (daughter of Thomas Wells per Baring 1815 & Martha Shaw per Brothers 1824) and husband JOHN WOODBURY, they had their first child, Priscilla registered in Gosford 1859, although other children were born in Wollombi, Priscilla married into the Waters family at Yarramalong. Hi marg and List members Every now an then we find something unexpected when we research our ancestors. Last week was my turn. While searching the PICMAN data base at the state library web site I entered the ORPEN and up popped an entry. a Mrs Helen Turner had donated some family papers to the Library on the family of James Gay & Henry Darling, who was the 2nd husband of Mary Grant. James Gay was her daughter Jessie's husband Off I went to the Mitchell Library to have a look.and found 2 original letters from the Rev Alfred Glennie to Mary. dated14th March 1867sent from the parsonage at Lochinvar. Mary grant and her first husband John Orpen lived at East Gosford and John died in 1866 Made my week regards Faye

Thanks Judy, I will be careful to double check any information, if I am lucky enough to be able to borrow some of these references through Inter Library Loan. I have read a lot of the Rev. Glennie's diaries for the period he was in the Hunter Valley [available on the web] and I like to imagine what the places looked like back then. I have been to some of the places mentioned and they are still open country. Branxton is on a very busy road now but one doesn't need much imagination to 'see' these places through Rev. Glennie's eyes.
