Hi Marg, Oh, I know the area very well spending my youth walking down Cobbs Road to school at Tuggerah Primary and scouring the hills and countryside with my brothers and cousins. My father (b.1907) would have a fit if he were alive today and saw the development down that road and the rest of the coast. He always said he believed he lived in the best of times depression and all. I was recently talking to a fellow who's family has had property at Tuggerawong around the 1930/40's he had similar sentiments. He feels he lived in at time that we won't see again, reflecting more on the natural state of the coast. We did get chatting about the area as he had quite a few old photos on the wall. He told me Edward Stinson used to live nearby and would often sit peacefully viewing the lake. He called it his church. Two more obituaries: CRAUSE An old identity of Gosford died in Dec 1899 at his home in St Peters Sydney - Henry Augustus CRAUSE, aged 82. Described as the son of Colonel Crause "commander of one of her Majesty's regiments [Queen Victoria]. Left a large family. Was recalled as having had some farming experience, and had been a timber merchant, publican, postmaster and shipbuilder. Remembered as a hotel-keeper in Gosford. In compliance with a long-expressed wish, deceased was interred in the old cemetery at Point Frederick Gsoford "where rest the remains of his wife and other relatives gone before". Rev Alfred Glennie in his Journals, spelt the name "Crawse" and that may be how it was pronounced. Members of the CC Family History Society who went on a walk recently around Bradys Gully Cemetery (now a park) in Henry Parry Drive, North Gosford, and to Pioneer Park at Point Frederick, will recall seeing the cluster of Crause headstones at the latter resting place. For the obit, see The Gosford Times 8.12.1899 MARTIN James George MARTIN of Erina died at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney, on 7.9.1932 aged 75. Born at Shepherds Bush, London, came to Australia in the 1880s with his wife and his eldest daughter Mrs J.J. Cooke of Gosford who was 3 years of age. Deceased was a plasterer. [Worked on the Erina-Terrigal-Wamberal War Memorial, now standing in Salvation Army grounds at Erina after removal from the Terrigal Road turnoff.] Lived Erina for 25 years, involved in the citrus industry. Survived by widow, four sons and three daughters and 24 grandchildren. Funeral at Woronora Cemetery, Sutherland. Connected families included Bromley and Smalley both of Matcham. See Gosford Times 15.9.1932 Regards to all, Gwen
Hello Ted, If you are travelling north to Wyong via the Sydney-Newcastle Freeway, you have to take a left exit at the Tuggerah Interchange, and then a right hand turn into Wyong Road (Cobbs Road) which leads to the Pacific Highway roundabout near Tuggerah Station. However, If a left turn is made at the top of the left exit, you would be following the Old Maitland Road which joins Yarramalong Road near the former site of Woodbury's Inn (now Woodbury Park). As Mrs Cobb was described as having lived in Tuggerah Road, it would seem that Cobbs Road is the modern name for the area in which she lived, but as I am not very familiar with it, I would only be making a supposition that it was named after this family. Best wishes from Gwen
Hello Group, Need some help with a picture or story on the front cover of the Gosford Times around 1925-1933. My father tells the story of when he was a young boy living in Narara St Gosford near the racecourse, he caught a snake. While walking back home, the local constabulary pulled him up and asked him "Young Billy what have you got in the bag?". My father replied "A snake, Constable". But the constable, knowing my father, said to young Billy (William), "Ah ha you think I'm a fool, give it here young son. It's either a rabbit or cat of some kind." Young Billy gave the bag over. When he emptied the bag, the constable jump back in fright, only to discover the slippery critter instead of a furry ball of delight. Now this all occurred outside the Old Times newspaper where the local reporter saw this event. He rushed up to young Billy and said, "Could you hold onto that critter 'till I get's me camera. I only be a jiff." Young Billy spoke out, "No worries, mate." And before you could say "Jack Robinson", Young Billy smiled as he held up that snake while that reporter captured this story that my father relates. Now the only sad part of this story which my father relates, is that he regrets not getting a copy of that picture or newspaper that carried this episode to substantiate. Well the family travelled to Gosford Library past, to see if we could find some reference to this young cheek. But alack, alas, no picture we could find, nor in the short time any story of such kind. So when you browse the Gosford Times, if you should come across young Billy Mills on the front cover, we would appreciate some lines. With Apologies to any poets, Wal Mills Metford (near Maitland which is up the road from Sydney NSW)
Hello, Gwen, Couldn't help noticing the obituary of Mrs Cobb. Our family lived on Cobbs Rd, Tuggerah from about 1932 and I was always told the road was named after the Cobb & Co coaches that travelled on Old Maitland Road. Now I'm wondering if that was more an assumption that fact and it had more to do with this lady and/or her family? I'm also not familiar with "Cobbs Hill" do you know if this was at Wyong or Tuggerah? Hi Marg Guilty as charged. I have a fair bit of information on the family of Thomas Grant & Ellen jennings and stay connected to the list as I am now researching the families of their children. Just always looking for a little snippett. I posted about a week ago that I had discovered a letter from Alfred Glennie in material donated to the Mitchell Library that was written to Mary Ann Orpen. Mary was widowed in 1866 and had written the Rev Glennie asking for a reference. One of the letters was a letter of recomendation and the other was a personal one to Mary, in it he asks her to be remembered to other old friends at Brisbane water , in particualr Mrs Cottrile and Mrs Piper.(spelling used in the letter) Mary marrried her second husband Henry Darling in 1885 and they had only one daughter Jessie Darling (born 1873) who married James W Gay. After contacting the doner of the material, I discovered that Jessie's two daughter's had remained unmarried and died in 1980 and 1994, Both were school teachers The doner was a nurse at the nursing home where both ladies were staying and there were no direct ancestors to inherit the material Mary was the eldest daughter of Thomas Grant & Ellen jennings, Other families that the children married into were Brennan, Norman, Mcdonald, Cadby, Walls Fitzpatrick,Taylor, Lucas Henderson, and Clarke regards faye
Hi Gwen Marg & other list members I have just logged on the computer and downloaded my email I had to tell you, loved the early obits. None of my ancestors, but such colourful history regards Faye
Hi Marg, Here's a small contribution of obituaries at random from Gosford and Wyong newspapers on microfilm at Gosford City Library, the State Library of NSW, and perhaps other venues: COBB: Mrs Elizabeth , died at her home in Tuggerah Rd, Wyong on 21.2.1937 aged 82. Born Ireland, was 18 months old when her parents settled at the spot since known as "Cobb's Hill". Husband died 15 years previously. Survived by a daughter and two sons. Buried C of E section in Jilliby Cemetery, funeral arrangements by Creighton. See Wyong Advocate 25.2.1937. DUIGAN: Mrs Mary Ann, died at her home "Laragh" North Gosford, aged 76. Buried Pt Frederick Cemetery Gosford alongside remains of her husband George who died many years before aged 53. Mary Ann was born at Ryde [Kissing Point] on Xmas Day 1845, a daughter of James Bronger. The Duigans ran the Fern Tree Hotel in Mann St Gosford after coming to the area from Rockdale, Sydney. See The Gosford Times 17.8.1922. NICHOLAS: John, of Wyong, late of Lisarow, died Sydney Hospital on 2.3.1917 aged 72. Born Lool, Cornwall, England 1845, came to Australia with wife and children "37 years later". Deceased was first a shipbuilder at Townsville in 1883, two years later came to Newcastle for a year, then settled at Blue Gum flat [Lisarow-Ourimbah]. The train from Newcastle had broken down there opposite Edward Wamsley's property, and he took a great liking to the look of the land and bought some for himself, later opening a bakery. Finally lived at Wyong. Left a wife and family of eight [connections include BAILEY, COTTRELL, COOPER, GRIGG, QUIGLEY]. See The Gosford Times 15.3.1917. Will send some more later on. Regards, Gwen
Dear Listers Been an interesting few days learning alittle more of the history of this area from around a dozen of so subscribers What about the rest of you ?????????? Dont any more have early ancestors who settled here ?or failing that have an interest in the history of this area ? There are around 120 fence sitters who dont appear to ever contribute When I have time I print bits & bobs from the old Gosford Times I get when I go to Gosford Library and re type to the list . Dont get many comments about these Some of the obits cover several columns and are nearly a Claytons census of names and of where of local families. In the library yesterday I tripped over a 1911 Post Office Directory of NSW and photocopied the pages for Gosford, Woy Woy and Wyong ....... I forgot The Entrance . Will get that next time Bye MargM Central Coast List Admin
Hi Marg, I wish that old building was still Gosford South PO! It was in a handy location for many people. It underwent various alterations and additions over the decades. In the 1880s the postmaster's house was built close on the southern side of it, a piece of ground that in more modern times became the site of the telephone exchange. I have a "real photo" postcard of Gosford post office, made c.1908 - it's beautifully sharp. A policeman in uniform and helmet stands on the footpath in front of it, smiling for the camera. That's the wonder of photographs - the way they capture actual pieces of the past. I got a real kick from finding the card and buying it. A strong magnifying glass (say 10X) put over an old photo may bring up all kinds of other fascinating detail not noticed by the naked eye. Regards, Gwen

Hi Marg, The old 1880s Gosford post office, referred to in the 1905 snippet from the Times, was conducted in Mann Street South. I spent a fair bit of time running in and out of the place as it was used there until a new post office was built and opened at the corner of Watt and Erina Streets. It had by that time become Gosford South PO. Still there opp Gosford Public School, but part of the Telstra buildings I think - haven't checked on it for a long time. Pam Williams is the expert on Mann St, as she and her co-author John Lewis have been deep into research for some time. Regards, Gwen
William Burns in 1905 was the owner of the Gosford Markets, several buildings located at the south end of Mann Street, opposite the present Council Chambers. He sold out a few years later to Frederick Cox. Later it was Chapman's. The land he advertised for sale was not necessarily at that location. He also owned a house at the other end of Mann Street, but I'm not aware of the area involved. Regards to all, Gwen
