    3. Further to Gwen's post ...I was taught for 2 years by the famous Miss Deasey in 3rd and 6th class at Gosford primary Schools, back in the 50's. The (then) temporary classrooms are STILL in use! She is not in any of the class photos but have samples of her handwriting from my school reports. Her nephew, the late Doug Deasey I knew pretty well. He was a bit younger than my mother so probably born about 1920. She played tennis with him and I have photos of him somewhere in tennis gear with Mum. He also worked in Woollies in Gosford for many years. I know a John Deasey who lives near me who is the spitting image of this Doug but has always been very vague when I mentioned these other Deaseys I know- obviously related. I am trying to find out whether he has email to forward your post on, otherwise I will ring him. 3. In 1993, Gosford District Local History Study Group (not now in operation) published the ground-breaking 2-volume work "Masonry in the Central Coast 1892-1992" in the series "Historical Records of the Central Coast of New South Wales". The books record that Thomas DEASEY was initiated in The Rising Sun Lodge on 3.12.1892, and attained the high office of Master of the Lodge in 1896. Also recorded are the details that DEASEY came to NSW from Ireland with his parents Hugh and Margaret DEASEY (nee Latham) who had 15 children. Thomas was born at Schull, County Cork, Ireland, on 23.2.1857. He was married in Sydney on 29.9.1884 to an Irish woman named Annie TEAPE. Mary DEASEY (who became a teacher in Gosford) was one of Thomas and Anne's children, and was born in 1894. Mary and her sister Kathleen did not marry. Thomas DEASEY above, died Gosford 6.8.1941. He was buried in Bradys Gully Cemetery, now a memorial park adjacent to North Gosford Private Hospital. Gwen

    3. Hello Lesley, I have a few small items re the DEASEY family of Gosford: Thomas and Anne DEASEY seem to have had several children while at Gosford and they were baptised Church of England: These were Margaret Emily b. 16.8.1885 Herbert George b. 27.5.1887 Thomas George b. 19.2.1889 Annie b. 15.1.1891 Kathleen Esther b. 28.7.1898 (Check these as the handwriting is a bit hard to read). The father, Thomas DEASEY was a land agent with an office in the Gosford township. His father, Hugh DEASEY, died at his residence "Tara" in Bay Street, Rockdale, Sydney on 6.7.1916 and was in his 84th year. I believe he may have lived at Gosford before going to Rockdale. Mary DEASEY taught primary school children at Gosford Public School, and was an identity of the town, being involved in women's organisations. A man named Hugh (Bert) DEASEY died aged 62 after a long railway career in 1949. This event was reported on page 1 of The Gosford Times issue of 18.11.1949. I had a look in the Charles Swancott book you have mentioned, "The Brisbane Water Story" part 1. Page 144 for T. DEASEY names him in a list of Buildings and Shops on the East Side of Mann Street, Gosford, in the early 1900s as follows: "Beane St: Office, T. DEASEY, estate agent, in front of house and hostel for girls working at the Railway Refreshment Room". [I have seen a very early photo showing his name and occupation on a free-standing small building which must have predated the above. GD]. Page 197 names T. DEASEY, land agent, as an alderman when "the towns of Gosford and East Gosford were in 1886 incorporated into a municipality"....the first mayor being J.B. Whiteway. On page 163, Swancott recorded that Miss DEASEY of Wyoming, took up her appointment as a teacher in 1926 and retired as deputy-headmistress in June 1958. You are probably aware that the Births, Deaths and Marriage indexes for NSW are online at http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/index.htm Somebody else on the Central Coast can probably add to these brief notes. Best wishes, Gwen

    3. from http://www.gosford.nsw.gov.au/library/local_history/Suburbs/documents/kincumber.html History of Kincumber "Early settlement Henry Gunsley Watson appears to have arrived in the Brisbane Water District sometime in the late 1820s. Two grants of Crown land to the south of Kincumber Creek and which had been earlier promised to other settlers, were sold to Watson . One property of 100 acres was named "Toowgill or Toorogil", and the smaller property of 60 acres was named "Cowringan". Henry Gunsley Watson was a cousin to Willoughby Bean, who was Brisbane Water's first resident Police Magistrate. In the late 1830s it was recorded in the Convict Muster that Watson had five assigned convicts at Kincumber. Little is known of his activities in the District, other than he sat on the local Bench as a Police Magistrate, and was probably a Justice of the Peace. In 1843 he was elected as one of the first Councillors in the first District Council of Brisbane Water. During 1846-1847, Watson is recorded as having left for India. Henry Gunsley Watson retired to Ceylon, and died "with straightened means" about 1870. Section based on pg 91, Bench Books & Court Cases, GDLHS)". Does anyone have any further info about Henry Gunsley Watson (date/place of birth, his exact relationship to Willoughby BEAN, etc)? 3. Margaret Gosford Hospital did not start till after the WW2!!! There were assorted cottage hospitals in the 30s and 40s. Roma in Albany St certainly existed in 1942 ( a friend was born there) and well into the 70's. There was also a maternity hospital nearby, called Hinemoa where I was born. If she lived in Spears St, Roma would be likely- not sure if Spiers Rd exists. There was stuff at Nth Gosford. Others will know more about that. A lot of people went to Sydney or did without or stayed at home. There were doctors. The Central Coast was a small place with few facilities before the 1960's when it grew as a result of electrification and the F3. Where hospital records are, I have no idea. Newspapers of the time would be a good source- see Gwen's earlier post Judy, an east Gosford born and bred type and still living not far away! > Would anyone please be able to tell me if the records for Gosford Hospital > would be available. 1. WYONG ADVOCATE and other papers
    2. G Dundon
    3. Hello Sally, You asked if anyone knew when the Wyong Advocate newspaper began. The first year you are interested in, l889, is far too early, for no township as such existed then on the present site of Wyong. The advent of the Great Northern Line railway between Homebush (Sydney) and Waratah (Newcastle) at that very period initiated more settlement around the stations. In 1988, the year before he died, the late Wyong historian Edward STINSON, who was a member of a pioneering family of Yarramalong, gave me some details of the early newspapers. He said that "Wyong's first newspaper was 'The Wyong District Record' of around 1908. The office was in the Wyong Coffee Palace which was destroyed by fire about 1913 at the corner of the present Pacific Hwy and Church Street. "About 1914 someone established 'The Wyong Herald' which was of similar size to 'The Sydney Morning Herald' and this was published until about 1920. "It was around the latter date that L.C. (Lyall) REEVES established 'The Wyong Advocate', a paper which continued into modern times [some slight name changes?]. "In the 1920s, R.B. TAYLOR subdivided his extensive land at The Entrance, Tuggerah Lakes, a move which resulted in the rapid expansion of the little town. This also led to Mr REEVES bringing out another paper about 1932, called 'The Entrance Guardian' which concentrated on The Entrance township itself, and which went under the same ownership as 'The Wyong Advocate'. "For some years in the 1930s, a small paper named 'The Wyong Mirror' was published, and at the same time a paper started at Morisset, called 'The Morisset Times'...." [ends] Perhaps some Listers can add to these details. All newspapers held by Mr STINSON at the time of his death went to the State Library of NSW for copying onto microfilm. Gosford City Library holds copies of this film for public access, however it must be stressed that the issues are fragmented in date, and overall are very limited in number. Possibly a copy of the mf is also held by Wyong Museum and Historical Society. I have often thought that if anyone owns odd copies of old district newspapers, it would be doing the public a favour if they could be donated to local archives, or lent for copying if not already on mf. 'The Gosford Times' newspaper commenced publication in 1885 as an advertising medium, and continued until 1962 until incorporated in 'The Central Coast Express'. Only a few copies of the Times prior to 1897 are held by the State Library of NSW and Gosford City Library on microfilm, but the ensuing years are generally available except for several important exceptions (I think 1908 is missing altogether, and papers from around the Second World War period were of such poor quality paper than many of the issues went dark brown and disintegrated into acidic flakes in storage). What issues have survived from the teens of the 20th century have large gaps in some years. Many issues were destroyed in a fire long ago in Gosford. You would need to check with the State or Gosford library to see if the years you want are extant. 'The Gosford Times' covered a wide area of Brisbane Water district and included Woy Woy Peninsula, the ocean beaches and hills areas as well as some news of Wyong etc (I think here of the annual Pioneer Dinners reports from 1915 onward - full of local history). Later, the Wyong papers covered the settlements around that area thoroughly, including Tuggerah Lakes. For anyone vitally interested in events prior to any of these local papers being established, it is not a bad idea to check out microfilmed files in the State Library of NSW of 'The Sydney Mail', ' Town and Country Journal', and 'The Maitland Mercury' - the last two (available on mf at Gosford) often being very productive. Look for items under the sub-headings 'Brisbane Water Notes' or 'Gosford Notes'. Ship launchings and wrecks will often be found in the daily Shipping Notes in 'The Sydney Morning Herald' - and these were copied in 'The Maitland Mercury' the following day. The Shipping Notes in early issues occasionally listed ship passengers by name on their arrival in Port Jackson. Looking for things can take up a great amount of time in scouring each issue around the date you have in mind - and sometimes you will find that the information you want was not published for many weeks after the particular event you have in mind (this fact leads to some of those jubilant shouts of "Eureka!" heard sometimes in libraries). Hope this will be of some help. Best wishes, Gwen

    3. Hi Melissa, Speaking of Gid's and Grid's there is also free access available to these two site at present:- http://archivegrid.org/web/jsp/index.jsp Available to the end of May http://www.gale.com/ Available to the end of April The first site is Archive Grid "a service of RLG, a not-for-profit membership organization of over 150 universities, national libraries, archives, historical societies, and other institutions with remarkable collections for research and learning." Quite a lot of American Institutions here for those that are researching kin in the "New World". The second site provides access to "The Times" digital archives. To negotiate the second site simply follow these instructions provided by a fellow family researcher:- "At the top right click on - National Library Week, then the big blue box marked "OTHERS", then blue box "THOMSON GALE POWER SEARCH", then scroll two thirds down to "The Times" of London Digital Archive. It doesn't work for common names except over a short time span, but I have found family entries for my family Yandell and Adsley, by a single search of all articles before 1900. Make sure you tick the search box called " in entire article content" In particular if you search this site make sure you tick the search box as recommended.
