Jane Fletcher had two sons (Edward 1848 and John 1849). to a John Berry in Brisbane Waters. Both children were baptised in the Parish of Gosford, County of Northumberland, NSW. She was listed on John's (Junior) Death Certificate. Apart from the above information, I have not been able to find the slightest mention of her in any of the many various searches that I have conducted. Unfortinately she constitutes the key link in proving the family line of her husband John Berry (my maternal G Grandfather). She is vital to my further progress. Can any one give me any idea/information that will give me a direction to search ?? Hopefully Scott Matthews Caloundra, Queensland email: [email protected]

It's hardly early, but my memories of growing up in the 1940s and 50's in Gosford was that there were only 2 doctors- Duncan for the protestants and Dwyer for the other colour!!! I was born in Hinemoa private Hospital, not far from the Gosford sailing club, now surviving as flats I think. It was run by 2 nursing sisters who were also sisters called Winterbottom. A nephew Kevin Winterbottom still lives in Frederick St. Others of my era were born in Roma Hospital in Albany St and I think there was another similar one in North Gosford area (Pam Williams would know!) Judy Gifford nee Rogers whose other local interests are SMITH/CAIN of East Gosford

Hello Marg, Yes, I subscribed to Rootsweb review, following your earlier message. It's another useful source for me to learn more of how to use this Internet thing! By the way, in the past week or so, I've had tremendous help from a number of people with information about my Robley family in Gosford and Wyong. I am stunned by people's generosity with their time and resources. This list has been wonderfully helpful to me. Apologies - I made an error in Death Date in my earlier posting. :-{ Ann GIBSON nee MOORE died ****27 AUGUST 1853***** at East Gosford/Kincumber. She was a Roman Catholic. can anyone suggest where she might be buried ? Her son-in-law Michael TREANOR was teaching at the RC School atEast Gosford. The reference to Kincumber made me wonder whether she might be buried at the old cemetry near the convent at Kincumber, but I could not find a marked grave for her there. Is there a burial record extant? Any suggestions would be very welcome. ----- From: "Gwen Dundon" <[email protected]> To: "Marg Morters" <[email protected]> Sent: 18 September 2000 08:00 Subject: Some early medicos Hi Gwen Very interesting response . Am re posting to the list Hopefully it might stir up an info pot ! Good question re early medicos, Marg! Wonder if anyone has done some > conclusive work on this subject? If they have its under wraps somewhere ! > Dr Robert Bell and his wife were living at East Gosford in 1843 when a son Robert was born to them on 5 July, father a surgeon. Dr Robert Auld must have been pretty early too, as he had land at corner of Henry Parry Drive and Wells St (where the small Council park is, I think) bought from Samuel Peek on his East Gosford estate. Some years ago I met a descendant researching Auld at Gosford Library, so perhaps a file is >held there on this person. There is only one AULD in Gosford nw, living at Henry Kendall Village, I think >Another early medico at East Gosford was Barker Joseph Benson, a surgeon, whose wife Hannah Emily gave birth to four children while there... William Robson 1845, Edward 1847, Emily Lancaster 1854 and Willis Allatson born 1860. I had a letter in 1989 from a great grandson of this doctor looking for information. Private nurses and midwives cared for people in the early days of the district, along with the doctor, and anyone seriously or injured was transported (painfully!) to Sydney Infirmary etc, as I understand it. In the 1920s, perhaps a bit earlier and later, there were some private hospitals conducted in Gosford, by nursing sisters such as Khandala (Sister M. Ricketts) in Hills St. Gosford District Hospital was not opened until 1945, although a fund to build a cottage hospital in the town was inaugurated in the late 19th century. I would be grateful for any information about early medicos to add to my very small file. Sincerely, Gwen Dundon

Gwen, Many, many thanks for these Robley references. They are tantalising - I really must try to track down these "other" Robleys. It's an uncommon name, so there could be a reasonably close connection a generation or so earlier, perhaps. I have been in touch with Robley researchers in Cumberland, England. There are still lots and lots of Robleys in Carlisle (where the Gosford/Wyong John Robley's grandfather came from). I have also been in touch with Roblee (sic) researchers in USA. They don't seem to be connected to the English Robleys. (They seem to stem from a "Raplee" origin, European, but not British). I'm writing this on Sunday evening. I hope tomorrow's mail will bring your letter. Will let you know! Best wishes, John P.S. Am re-reading your "Old Gosford and District in Pictures" and "More Old Gosford and District in Pictures." Hello Marg and all listers of this new list, and Congratulations. My name is Robyn Arkinstall, and I live on the beautiful Central Coast at Gosford. My husband's 2 Greats Maternal Grandfather was Ezekiel WATERS who was an early Pioneer of the evergreen Yarramalong Valley. Ezekiel and Jane (nee Williamson) came to OZ from Ireland, first settled in Hexham, but floods forced them to up sticks and move to the Yarramalong Valley. They produced a family of 6, 5 reaching adulthood, and left many, many descendants. Our line descends from their last born son Robert Irvine Coulter. Robert Irvine Coulter WATERS-(1850-1930) & his wife Elizabeth (nee BAILEY)-(1855-1914) had a large family of 14, where all but 1 survived and as they lived on the Central Coast, there must be hundreds of local descendants. Some associated names of the family include ATCHISON,KENNEDY,CAWTHORNE,JURD,STACKMAN,COOPER,EDEN/HAYES,CRAFT,HITCHCOCK and QUIGLEY. I have a large database on some of these descendants and am always on the look-out for information or photographs which I can borrow to scan into my files. I look forward to hearing from anyone with connections to this large family, will be happy to provide any information I can. Kindest regards everyone,.....Robyn Arkinstall [email protected] http://www.intercoast.com.au/~erindra
Dear CC Listers, Does anyone know who the first Doctor was in this area and when ? When the first hospital opened and where it was ? Was no Westpac rescue helicopter back in 1835 :-) Bye Marg Morters

Dear John, I had a quick look at the Historical Records of Australia, Series 3, Vol 4 at the library while there this morning re the Robley I remembered vaguely as being mentioned. Just to satisfy myself about the name! On p.784, there is a list of settlers and land holders of Hobart Town who were signatories in an enclosure to an address to Mr R.W. Loane by Sorrell, dated 4.7.1818. Among them: George Robley and John Robley. On p.851, there are details of matters relating to the claim of John Robley and J. Mitchell for some land in Hobart Town. The date was 24.3.1819. Not your family apparently, but I thought these references said something about a John Robley in the military - WRONG! Let me know please if the Snail Mail material sent to you during last week does not turn up - other mail is missing. Best wishes, Gwen
