    2. Mary Lidbetter
    3. INVITATION Members of Families that were connected with the northern area of the Berry Estate and surrounding districts in 1901 are invited to a Celebratory Picnic on the Berry Showground on Saturday 12 May 2001. This is to commemorate the picnic held as part of the official NSW State Program when the Government sent 2 train loads of official guests to the Berry Showground, for the trip and picnic. Although this was held the same week as the Federation Celebrations in Sydney the 2001 event will be held 12 May 2001. The Berry and District Historical Society is co-ordinators of the event assisted by local organisations. Perhaps your family would like to assist in mounting a small display with perhaps a small outline of your history and the district to where your families have spread. I am currently calling for expressions of interest and the space available for each family will depend on the number of acceptances. Perhaps your family would like to enter a float in the procession or march as a group under a family banner. maybe even in costume. CONTACT Hon Sec BDHS - Mrs June Robson PO Box 153 Berry NSW 2535 Email: <[email protected]> Family History Display - Mrs Mary Lidbetter, 13 King Street Berry NSW 2535 Email: <[email protected] Programme updates will be posted on: Berry & District Historical Society web page: <www.berryhistory.org.au>

    1. Central Coast Pioneers - TAAFFE and FREEMAN
    2. David Armstrong - Business Manager - Product Sales
    3. Hello everyone, As Marg Morters' suggested I'd like to introduce myself and put forward my family interests, hoping that others on the list may have family connections, anecdotes, etc that may help fill in the pieces. My name is David Armstrong and I live in Sydney. I began to investigate my family history earlier this year when I accidently discovered the NSW BDM index was available to search on-line. All I knew was that my gg grandparents were early settlers near Cams Wharf on Lake Macquarie. Since then I've discovered skeletons galore and could write a novel but I still have lots of holes to fill. This is an addiction ! My central coast ancestors were: JOHN TAAFFE and family who settled near Cams Wharf, Lake Macquarie. His wife was ELIZABETH FREEMAN, eldest daughter of JAMES FREEMAN and MARY ANN SMITH. John Taaffe (actually baptised Patrick Taafe) was born in Kent St, Sydney in 1826, the eldest son of convicts Patrick Taaffe and Mary Ann Burke. His father died in 1841 and I think his mother re-married in 1844. About that time it seems the family split up with John heading for Brisbane Waters where he met the Freeman's. James Freeman was born at Isle of Ely, c1795-98, and arrived in the colony in 1817. After several misadventures he was assigned to Robert Henderson at Brisbane Waters. He managed Henderson's dairy at Cabbage Tree and it was here that he met Mary Ann Smith who was also assigned to Henderson. Their firstborn was a daughter Elizabeth, born in 1832. I'm trying to find out how John Taaffe came to be in the Brisbane Water area. He was friendly with Thomas Boyd who had a ketch called "Turtle". Perhaps they met in Sydney, Boyd was sailing to Gosford etc...who knows. At any rate I know that John Taaffe and Elizabeth Freeman married at Gosford in 1849, and in 1853 they sailed with Thos Boyd and Elizabeth's younger sister, Eliza, to Reids Mistake where they settled. Thos Boyd and Eliza Freeman later married in 1859. I also know that the Freemans were at Reids Mistake in 1839, as one of their children was born there. This seems to be very early in the history of white settlement at Reids Mistake and I wonder why they were there. Another ancestor, who was an early settler in Yarramalong, was WILLIAM BEAVEN. But maybe that's outside the area ? If anyone has any connections with these families I'd love to hear from you. regards, David

    2. Davis, Leith (FORESTRY)
    3. Hi everybody On the central coast I'm researching the families of Edward Davis (and the Pipers but that isn't all that exciting, its all been done). My brick wall is quite a sad one just at present. My great grandfather Edward (2) had 4 children - Ednie Manning, Leith, Daisy and Eric (a fifth died in childhood). Daisy Davis married William T Howard in 1920 at Newtown. The family lore was that she settled in Melbourne and had a family. Her children are my father's cousins - I would really like to find them. The brick walls are: (a) apparently this William T Howard is NOT part of the central coast Howard family (b) Aunty Leith, who died 15-20 years ago, kept in touch with Daisy. I got in touch with my cousin, Aunty Leith's daughter three weeks ago and she was going to look through her papers to find Daisy's married name and any clues. Unfortunately my cousin died two weeks later. I have to wait a decent interval to hassle her sons now! So that's my brick wall for now Leith Davis -----Original Message----- From: Marg Morters [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, 5 November 2000 21:16 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: Introduction to help solve ' brick walls' Greetings Central Coast family researchers My name is Marg Morters I am your List Administrator. 3. Dear CC Listers I got a severe attack of the gene bug back in February 1990 while up in Rockhampton sorting out the estate of my husbands fathers 2nd wife All Freds gt gparents were living in Rockhampton before 1900 By sheer fluke I stumbled on a very large framed photo of one lot of these gt grandparents This was wrapped in a blanket and bought home from its lonely sojourn in an antique shop Was no way I could have left it in that shop. These days its the centrepiece of my rogues gallery as its surrounded by many other old family photos that I have collected Was alot of error and trial in my first year or so of research and still is sometimes :-) . My car got to know its own way to the LDS at Charlestown ( Gosford LDS didnt open till about 1994) I bought my first computer in 1992 with the latest of inventions, a modem. This had a speed of 2400 BPS and the computer was a 386 Amstrad. I soon discovered the FidoNet BBS system and was hooked I joined the SAG about 1994 and the Central Coast FHG about the same time. Started up a CC DPS in April of this year and a mailing list in August I am the CC FHS research officer Doing research for others is a huge learning curve and have been doing it for some years. Being a Ten Pound Pom and a 31 yr old Aussie by choice I have no local family connections at all but that doesnt stop me being interested in the history of this area Have a project which is on the back burner at the moment of finding out about early medical services to abt 1900 There are alot of fence sitters in the 69 subscribers to this list ! How about you introduce yourselves ????? Lets get some discussion going . Who among you have local families ? and who dont ? bye Marg Morters NSW Central Coast Mailing List Gosford, NSW Australia [email protected]

    3. Have just been rung by a Gosford local asking me to see if I can find out anything about the hospital in which he was born in 1928. He says it was called Khandala though he is not sure of the spelling. That's the main thing he wants to know. It was more than a maternity hospital as one brother died there aged 19 mths and he knew of others hospitalised there. It was run by Sr Ricketts and Sr Maxwell and Dr George Duncan went there. He was nearly called Duncan Maxwell after 2 of them!! The house is still standing and was used as a private home from WW2 onwards. The Lees family lived there during the war years. It is at 19 ? Hills St on the right heading north just past the Physio place and opposite the Hills St medical centre. Can anyone shed any light. Thanks, Judy Gifford

    3. Hi Mary I have a connection by marriage with the Glanville family - my great aunt May Hoffman from Sussex Inlet married Henry Glanville, son of Daniel and Eliza. They lived at "Mondyong" just off Sussex Inlet Road on the 'road' to Berrara. I have a bit of information on them, there is another researcher on the SE list, Greg Lloyd, who is a descendant of Charlotte, Henry's sister. I know that a younger son, Thomas, moved to the Richmond area when the Big Scrub was opened up. I come from Jervis Bay, went to Nowra High School and remember the Lidbetter name - I probably went to school with members of you or your husband's families. My family are sawmillers south of Nowra, an offshoot of the central coast Davis family but I doubt that there is a connection with Sydney 1810 or Jamberoo 1820. We are descended from William and Sarah Davis, who arrived in the early 1830s from County Roscommon Ireland. They initially settled in Wollongong before moving to Brisbane Water 1838 (39?) - could William have had connections here? I am an amateur offshoot conjecturing here, any more expert opinions on the list? regards Leith Davis -----Original Message----- From: Mary Lidbetter [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, 25 October 2000 8:54 To: [email protected] Subject: Posting my Interests Dear Subscribers, Posting my interests: BICE - Pre 1576 St Enoder Cornwall England- 1837 Shoalhaven NSW - Nth Coast NSW - all over DAVIS - 1810 Sydney NSW - 1820 Jamberoo NSW - Nth Coast - all over GOULDER - 1640 Nottingham England - 1912 Sydney Australia - all over IRVINE (3 Irish Families) 1. - pre 1770 Fermanagh Ireland - 1840 Illawarra NSW- Nth CoastNSW -all over 2. 1770's Tyrone Ireland - 1840 Illawarra NSW - Nth Coast NSW- all over 3. 3. Hi Jennifer ----- > I am trying to find out whether the cemetery at Jilliby is still there? Certainly is tThe Wyong Family history Group transcribed this some time ago Tuggarah Library has the book .......Cemeteries of Wyong Shire Tuggarah Library is at Westfield shopping Centre , Tuggarah. If you take the first Wyong turn off from the F3 ( Cobbs road) .turn right over the freeway and you cant miss the shopping centre as its huge. The Library is at the far end > Does anyone know?, if so could you give me directions to find it please. Turn left up Alison rd in Wyong ( 2nd lights ) drive along there past the high School and down over Porters Creek new bridge . Over the freeway . There a right hand turn just past this bridge. Take that and drive a little way long here and theres a turn off to the left. Jilliby cemetery is just up this road on the right hand side. Be about 10 mins or so drive from Wyong Bye Marg Morters Central Coast Family History Society GOSFORD NSW Australia [email protected] > > > ============================== > Search over 600 million names at Ancestry.com! > http://www.ancestry.com/search
