    3. Hi fellow fence sitting listers, I agree, the holidays are over, the brickwall flattened faces have had a chance to recover, it is time to get off the fence and proceed to smack the nose against the brickwall again: It will finally crumble! I am still searching for the parents of my Grandfather, John Berry (Sawyer), born in Brisbane Waters in 1849. Their names were John Berry (Sawyer) and Jane Fletcher. Except for the birth of an elder son (Edward), I have not been able to establish any other definitive events (Births, Marriage, Deaths). With the greatly appreciated assistance of several listers and member's of the Fletcher descendants, the family of William Fletcher has been eliminated as a reference point for Jane. Is she just a figment of my imagination? A candidate for John Berry senior is reported, in a letter to the Colonial Secretary in 1847, as being in Parlous health and in need of being admitted to the infirmary. As the infirmary records may reveal the name of this person's wife, I need to locate where the infirmary was (Sydney/Gosford) and if records do exist relating to 1847 patients. This would allow me to prove/eliminate this John Berry as my ancestor. If any lister has any information relating to this subject, it will be greatly appreciated as it is becoming very frustrating for me. Regards Scott Matthews Sunshine Coast, Queensland.

    1. JARRETT
    2. Rhonda Paine
    3. Hi all Following on from Gwen's submission on 6th Jan. I am interested to know if the William JARRETT mentioned is William who married Margaret Woods in Gosford 1847. Thanks Rhonda Paine, Central Mangrove 2250 Central Coast interests - COOPER, MILLER <<While the following may not be relevant to his research, it does explain the origin of some street names at North Gosford/Wyoming, NSW. The connection of at least some of the names, about to be given, with a land subdivision company known as Excelsior has been known locally for some time, but will bear some exposure. In the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper issue of 22 September 1936 the following obituary appeared for Mr A.R. JARRETT: "Mr Alfred Richard JARRETT, who died at Leichhardt [Sydney] recently in his 99th year, was a native of Chatham, England, and came to Sydney 76 years ago. He was a resident of Leichhardt for 56 years, and lived in one cottage for 53 years. He was a ship's carpenter by trade, and on arrival here became manager for the Excelsior Building Society, one of the directors of which was his brother William JARRETT. Areas of vacant land in Drummoyne, Leichhardt and Marrickville were acquired, subdivided, and built upon by the society. A number of streets in each of the suburbs mentioned were named after the society's directors - DAY, CARY, JARRETT, THORNLEIGH and RENWICK. After the subdivisions were built upon, Mr JARRETT erected a number of hotels in the suburbs, the last being the Elswick Hotel at the top of Taverner's Hill in 1882. He is survived by four daughters, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The remains were interred in the Church of England section of the Rookwood Cemetery." [ends] NB: The Renwick named was Dr Arthur Renwick, father of Rev. A. Renwick of Gosford. He was a director of the afore-mentioned Excelsior land company which had interests in the Gosford district.>>

    1. Researching William Booth
    2. Ann Musgrave
    3. Hello Listers I have recently joined your list and planned to "sit on the fence" a little longer but Marg's listing has prompted to join in. Hope this listing isn't too long. My ggg grandfather William Booth was a convict transported to Tasmania in 1833 for seven years for stealing a copper tea kettle. He married Bridget Fitzpatrick in Launceston in 1843, they had 4 children (Thomas William, Jane, Myrtygh and Honora - also known as Annie) before moving to Peeks Point sometime between March 1850 and 1855. They had another son William in 1955 who died the same year. William died in 26 November 1861 and is buried at Point Frederick. In the Pioneer Families of the Brisbane Water District of NSW it listed William as having held the licence for "The Australia Hotel" at Peek's Point as well as the licence for Booth's Wharf. I am unsure of the exact location of both of these places. William's son Myrtygh Booth (also spelt as Mirtage, Mirtige and Murtage) was accidently killed by the capsizing of a Timber Truck on 24 November 1885 at Cooranbong. He was aged 40 years and left a wife (Bridget Owens) and 10 children. I would be very interested to hear from anyone researching this family. I would also like to know of any references I could look up to find out more about the hotels and their locations, photographs etc, if any cemetery records exist for Point Frederick and if there would have been any newspaper articles covering Myrtygh's accident. I have a copy of Reid's Mistake (The Story of Lake Macquarie from its Discovery until 1890) by Keith H. Clouten, where the Booth family is mentioned, and would be happy to do lookups for anyone interested in that area. Any help at all would be gratefully appreciated. Regards Ann Musgrave Griffith NSW

I am researching two familys who resided on the Central Coast from about the mid 1850s: John Anson who lived with Judith Buff and their three children; Rachael, Samuel & Thomas. I am directly descended by Thomas. When Judith died John married Mary McGregor. Rachael married Charles Ramos, Samuel married Annie Madden and Thomas went north and married Margaret Corbett before returning to Wyee. Judith's brother Samuel died in 1852.
