Hi Listers, Gwen was correct when she said that Arthur Richard Jarrett's family probably was not relevant to my research. The Jarrett family whose history may contain a clue to solving my BERRY riddle is, I believe, the family of George Jarrett. To the best of my knowledge, the facts are as follows. George Jarrett arrived in Australia on 27th November, 1833 in the ship "Lady Nugent". He was accompanied by his wife, (Betsy) Elizabeth (nee Larkin), his step daughter Rebecca Larkin, and children, Maria, William and Ester. The family settled in the Erina area. In 1846, Ester married a Daniel Berry. The marriage did not last, with Ester leaving after a short number of years and marrying an Edward Taylor after Daniel's death in 1876. Daniel had a brother, John, who is at present, the most likely father of my Grand father, John Berry, born at Brisbane Waters in 1849. Even though it is clutching at straws, I am hoping that there just maybe some record in the Jarrett history linking John Berry to Jane Berry ?/Jane Fletcher? At the very least, I need to eliminate the possibility. Also, the Jarretts were, I believe, strongly connected to the timber industry. My grand father, John Berry, and his father, the John Berry in question, were both Sawyers and were, I believe, involved in mill management/ownership ?. I am interested in discovering if the activities of the Berrys and Jarretts were combined at any time, particularly in the Glen Innes and South East Queensland regions. If anyone has any information, which will either have a positive result to my search or get this particular monkey off my back, I will be greatly appreciative of their help. I am not sitting on the fence, but I am lurking in the background. I have family members living on the Central Coast but no family history in the district. My reason for subscribing to the ng is to offer assistance where possible by way of lookups on various lists and cds that I have. I do not advise on the group what lists etc that I have, but rather jump in when I can help. I also have a keen interest in the replies to most postings to learn a little more about this wonderful place we call home and the pioneering families that "made it all happen". Perhaps your listers would like to have a look at my Dundon webpage, there is an excellent article relating the trade of Plastering and was written by a Central Coast cousin Gene Dundon. It gives an insight to working during the depression up to the seventies. Regards, Col Dundon in Sydney. Hi Daniel You mention Goldsmiths of Wyong. In my recent 'jumping off the fence' message, I mentioned the mini-migration that seems to have taken place from the north and central coast to Huskisson, where I come from. Well it just happens that another of the old families of Huskisson were/are the Goldsmiths, a family of fishermen. They always had fairly close connections with the Settrees, I'd assumed it was the fishing/boat building link but then I'd assumed our family's connection was because of being neighbours - now I assume nothing! Might there be a connection between your Wyong Goldsmiths and the Huskisson families? While we're at it, does anyone know of a family named Lenham, probably fishing? regards Leith Davis -----Original Message----- From: Daniel and Bridgette [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, 11 January 2001 5:08 To: [email protected] Subject: Another fencesitter! Hi Gwen, You are quite right. The Baptism entries confirm Edwards birthdate as 1st Aug. 1848 with John & Jane Berry as parents. John's Birthdate is listed as 1st May 1849 with John Berry & Jane Fletcher as parents. Just to make it interesting, John Jnr's marriage certificate (1875) lists his mother as Elizabeth Murund ?. I have not been able to find any trace of anyone of them as yet. Does the source that you accessed give any clue as to John Berry's history. For example, is there any chance that he is John Berry the ex convict who had a brother Daniel living in the Brisbane Waters district at the time. Do you think that the Glennie journals would be likely to give me any leads on either the family/births or the lead up to the infirmary admission request. If yes. where would I be likely to get access to them. Thanks for the help Regards Scott Matthews
I'm jumping off as well.... I have the opposite problem to Marg - my family came from the Central Coast but our twig is now on the south coast and I now live in Adelaide! Central Coast interests: Edward Davis and Lydia Piper were my gg grandparents. I'm presently trying to trace their descendants. Is anyone looking for HALLIDAY or PICKETT? I'm also interested in finding out how the Dents, the Settrees, and Edward (2) Davis all ended up at Jervis Bay. I think I have the beginnings of an answer tucked away in the fine print of Gwen's ship book. The answer for Edward(2) is probably not so tucked away in a lurid Sydney tabloid somewhere - his wife, Mary Laurie, divorced him in the early 1900s. Eventually I'm hoping to pull together all the strands and relate them to the development of the timber industry in NSW but that is the grand plan that has to wait a while. Areas: North Coast: Davis, Laurie South Coast (Jervis Bay area, Tomerong, Milton): Davis, Hoffmann, Ellmoos, McGuire, Suffolk (I'll be contacting Darren off list - I thought I was related to EVERYONE who comes from Tomerong) Balmain: Piper, Davis etc Sydney: Bates, Boulton, Kilpatrick (on my mother's side but some of the Bates and Boultons were whalers so I'm going to look closely for connections to the shipbuilding etc) thats about it for now regards Leith Davis Adelaide -----Original Message----- From: Darren [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, 8 January 2001 12:14 To: [email protected] Subject: Re-posting:Jumping Off the Fence Dear List, Im one of the 80 or so "fence sitters"!! I'd like to just add a bit about SAG and encourage researchers to at least visit them, if not join. While they have all of the films and fiche you find in most public libraries these days (plus more), they have an excellent collection of books, family histories, local study group newsletters and much more. They also have large collections which have been donated to them, such as card index files and so on. I have found heaps of material relating to various branches of my tree. Note there are 2 buildings, one for Australia and the other for overseas collections. Both are in Kent St in the city. The volunteers on duty are also extremely helpful and knowledgeable. cheers David > Resent-Date: Fri, 5 Jan 2001 02:55:04 -0800 > X-Original-Sender: [email protected] Fri Jan 5 02:55:03 2001 > From: "margm" <[email protected]> > Old-To: <[email protected]> > Old-Cc: <[email protected]> > Subject: Re:Answers > Date: Fri, 5 Jan 2001 21:45:01 +1100 > MIME-Version: 1.0 > Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit > X-Priority: 3 > X-MSMail-Priority: Normal > X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.00.2919.6600 > Resent-Message-ID: <[email protected]> > To: [email protected] > Resent-From: [email protected] > X-Mailing-List: <[email protected]> archive/latest/214 > X-Loop: [email protected] > Resent-Sender: [email protected] > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Judy Rowe" <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Sent: 05 January 2001 19:25 > Subject: Re: Is they anyone there > > > I did post these more as examples of a Q & A .
