    1. Dr Frank Kendrick
    2. Gwen Dundon
    3. Dear Listers, Some interest has been expressed in the subject of doctors who were in practice in the Gosford district of NSW in earlier days. I have always been interested in the tragic history of Dr Frank Kendrick and his family, and thought I would share what little I have with you. Firstly from the Aldine Centennial History of NSW, by W.F. Morrison (1888), Gosford profiles, Vol 2: "Dr Frank Kendrick, L.S.A., London, was born in 1861 in Staffordshire [England] and received his education at Cheltenham College, Gloucestershire, and graduated at the London Hospital. He remained there for about five years, and for a short period of time practised as a physician at Codsall in Staffordshire. In 1886 he arrived in Sydney and for some time acted as assistant to his brother-in-law, Dr Hozier of Windsor. He then located himself in Gosford where he served as assistant surgeon to Dr Calder, which position he still holds. He is medical officer to the local lodge of Oddfellows, and medical referee to the Australian United Fire Insurance Coy (Accident Branch). Dr Kendrick belongs to the Church of England." In the RGO's Index to Births, Deaths & Marriages we find that Kendrick married Catherine M. MacDermott in 1888 (reg. no. 529). Children born to them (those found) were Dermot H. Kendrick b. 1888, Frank D. Kendrick 1889 and Rupert Royston Kendrick born 1893 who died 29.11.1893, two months after his father's death. Both the older boys died in 1890. There is no record of their burials at Bradys Gully Cemetery in Gosford where Dr Frank Kendrick was buried, so perhaps they died in Sydney? I have not checked out that point. The following entry was noted in the Death Notices of the "Sydney Morning Herald" issue of 28.9.1893: KENDRICK: September 25, at his residence, Bilbrooke Villa, Gosford, Dr Frank Jones Kendrick, aged 34 years, third son of the late David Kendrick of Oxley Hall, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire England". It was mentioned in the Gosford Notes of the SMH on 26 September, that the doctor had died suddenly. The tragic deaths of her husband and children must have been too much for Mrs Kendrick's mind. She spent two years in psychiatric care prior to taking employment in 1900 as a governess at North Sydney ( one can only imagine the anguish she must have suffered in the teaching of someone else's children). She had been in her employment for some months when one day she met a friend by arrangement and they visited Coogee Bay. In the course of general conversation while they were walking along the tops of the cliffs, her friend made a remark about the apparent loneliness of a seagull. She said, "Yes, it does look lonely, and so am I!" With that she flung down her parasol and plunged over the cliffs, falling about 90 ft to the rocks. She was badly mutilated. The coroner's verdict was "suicide while suffering mental depression". The terrible happening caused a sensation in Gosford where both she and her late husband had made many friends. (ref: "The Gosford Times issue, 24 Aug, 1900). Regards, Gwen

    1. Brisbane Water
    2. Judy Gifford
    3. further to this discussion. I presume it was named after Governor Brisbane around the same time as Brisbane was named- very confusing really.] It's original name was the northwest arm of broken Bay. On the waterfront just down below where I live - actually near the boat ramp at the end of Orana ST behind the Green Point shops, there is an obelisk that was erected in 1988 (I think!) to commemorate the visit in June 1789 by Governor Phillip and the other 'heavies' of the early settlement. They were looking for arable land as food shortages were major early problems for the colony. When you stand and look out from the spot now, it doesn't look, apart from housing, a whole lot different from what it must have looked then- steep heavily wooded hills- lots of fish and small native animals I presume From memory, the first grant of 600? acres was made to someone called Smythe around 1830. If any one wants the correct wording, I'll take pen and paper next time I go for a walk along the waterfront. Judy Gifford, a born and bred local whose roots go back to E Gosford in 1855 with the arrival of the proverbial John Smith and family, butcher of E Gosford, who came from Oving, Bucks and was first employed as a butcher by an early settler called NUNN. he built the stone house that is on the left at the Punt Bridge just as you leave E Gosford. (CAIN and ROGERS are 2 connected families)

    3. At the risk of everyone shouting at me to get off and give someone else a go, I MUST moan about this: Please, when you are speaking or writing about Brisbane Water there is actually no final "s" on Water! Historically, Brisbane Water is the correct name of this arm of Broken Bay just above Sydney. I would be delighted and grateful to hear from anyone who knows of any record which gives the exact date of the adoption of this name. The earliest reference I have is in a Memorial to Governor Brisbane by James Webb in August 1824. Webb was already living in the district. In the Memorial he stated that he had seated himself on the west bank of the north east arm of Broken Bay 'now known by the name of Brisbane Water'.... The Brisbane Water name is certainly confusing for many people from other states who can't understand why the name is used in NSW. Naturally they think of Queensland, and in fact the use of the name at both places was in honour of Governor Brisbane (1821-1825). Qld was still part of New South Wales at that time. More and more businesses are adding an "s" to Brisbane Water in their trading name, probably without realising that that it is not historically correct - or because that's how they prefer it. Perhaps others won't agree with me, but when so many things are changing in our society I think it would be nice if, when possible, we could retain placenames with a long historical attachment. OK, my hobby horse has rushed back to its stable now. Gwen

BUT there are still a great many other fence sitters/ lurkers . So how about it you silent folk ?? Make a contribution , introduce yourselves . There could be an un known cousin reading it . You maybe like me and have no family roots in this area but what about where you live ??. Must be something of interest .?? One of my project for this year apart from gathering info on pre 1900 medical practitioners on the Coast is to find out about a bloke named Thomas WALKER . Were I live in Berkeley Vale I often drive down Thomas Walker Drive. Well that was just the name of the road till I happened to see an old map of this area late last year. Thomas WALKER held the original land grant for this end of Berkeley Vale I had thought it might have been John LARNACH who held the first land grants around what is now Wyong. Thomas WALKER is still on the back burner but not forgotten . I will get to him bye Marg Morters NSW Central Coast Mailing List Gosford, NSW Australia [email protected]

    3. yes, Gwen, wells were pretty common once- reliable source of water around here. the Berry St one made Mum reminisce about the one we used when we lived in the house that is now the admin centre for St Edwards college. The well was very close to the house on the eastern side. Mum has often wondered what the Brothers did with it. The other family one was a very deep pure one that never ran out at another former Rogers property at MacMasters. It was right in the bottom left hand corner of their place which is on the right just before where the road forks to go to the beach and climbs the hill to go towards south MacMasters, Maitland Bay etc. Judy Gifford (nee Rogers)

    3. Judy, it was thanks to Marg Morters that I was put in contact with Helen and saw the old well in Berry Avenue. I had not heard of the (Bill) Berry farm there before, and have been meaning to contact some friends of that name to see if I can follow it up. Tortoise-like, I am still trying to clear my desk of piled up paper so that I can chase that and other items to their possible conclusion. I don't think old wells are all that out of the ordinary, but maybe most are filled in now for safety reasons. One of the old town wells (public) was uncovered briefly in William Street Gosford when the Council was doing work along that walkway quite a number of years ago. It was strongly lined with very thick planks in a square shape, and was full of VERY rich brown water. I took some photos of it at the time. The Council closed it over under the footpath and installed the bubbler at the site. It is right at the southern end of the crosswalk to Woolies. There's a plaque on it. That's plaque, not plague! Some people were horrified and thought that the bubbler was drawing water from the well. The Council hastened to assure everyone that it was well and truly connected to the town water supply. Cheers from Gwen

    3. I may have mentioned this before and have forgotten (Old Timers' Disease!), but a Charles Jarrett, cedar agent (and sawyer) is included in the index of "Men and a River - Richmond River District 1828-1895" by the late Louise Tiffany Daley. Only a few interesting mentions - information taken from Jarrett's notebook - but perhaps other books about the area will produce more information on Jarretts. Louise Daley's book is full of people's surnames, a real treasure. A number of sawyers from Brisbane Water moved to the northern rivers. Regards, Gwen

    3. The mention of the BERRY family has piqued my interest. I wonder if there is any connection with the family who had an orchard at Green Point. I actually live in Berry Avenue, called after the family as this subdivision was done on their orchard in the 1960s. Yes, Gwen Dundon,I have met Helen and know about the well. My mother and her brother grew up in Kincumber and travelled into Gosford High in the period 1926-32 and can clearly remember the orchard. They had the impression that the house was well down towards the water. Does anybody know anything more before I do some research, when I have nothing better to do (grin!) Judy Gifford

    3. Marg, Glad to see you stirring us into action! as promised, I finally looked through the various certificates I have for my ROGERS/SMITH/CAIN families who in the main lived at E Gosford. There were a surprising variety of names; eg WN CAIN d. 18.7.1893 - attendant was GLL Lawson John SMITH d 11.2.1892 - FJ Kendrick; his wife Elizabeth who d. 2.7.1899 was attended by Sidney Fielder (registered surgeon). Their daughter in law, Margaret SMITH (My gtgrandmother) d. 7.71901 and was attended by Ernest A Lavery. I have the birth certificate of her daughter, also Margaret (my grandmother)- there was no doctor mentioned but the witness was Mrs Pateman, who was a well known midwife of the time. Dr Fielder also provided the medical attention for William ROGERS who died at E Gosford 25.7.1906. On his deceased estate papers, Dr Fielder was owed 3 pounds, 16 shillings. I found a cutting given to me by Gwen Dundon concerning my SMITHs. It was from the Town and Country Journal 29.4. 1876. There was a reference to an accident and 2 injured boys were "attended by Dr Harris, whose presence is certainly a great benefit to the district of Brisbane Water." So in a period of 30 years in E Gosford there were at least 4 medical attendants- Harris, Lawson, Fielder and Lavery Judy Gifford (nee Rogers- connected to SMITHs and CAINs)
