    1. Bright idea
    2. Frank Cardiff
    3. Since we are supposed to TALK in this group I will pass on a little idea. Being brought up in the Mac World of Cut and Paste and being full of bright ideas(!) I decided recently to update my Name Lists. Some I have had for years, when I laboriously copied details from phone directories then put them into the computer. Well I recently went through the Telstra white pages on line. I suppose many of you have printed out all the entries for a name you are after (excluding the Smiths etc) and will know it's quite easy to "Print Page" and there it all is. But smartie decided to delete all the extraneous stuff, weather etc and all those little icons leading to other stuff. How? Just Drag around the actual entries you want, COPY, then PASTE to a Word processing document. May have to alter to Landscape, then do a bit of juggling by deleting some tabs, line breaks etc and you should end up with a neat list of just the names and numbers you want. Even though you will have to do each State separately, and for each decide on Capital then Rural, you can, with a little work, end up with one continuous list. Sure makes it easy to check with those old lists you have (haven't you?) from earlier years. Anyone else got any bright ideas? (Marg, that should get a few down off the fence!) How come they keep saying "We Value Your Service" but they still ask us to push all those buttons? How do we register our protest? And don't say "Press Hash.............." After a very successful DPS meeting at East Gosford (Anyone who hesitates to come to these meetings are really missing out on heaps of info and fun not to mention meeting some pretty beaut people!) - I would like to let anyone who gets 'those' death certificates that states a cause of death you have never heard of - just go into the site below and it explains in todays terms just what Uncle Harry etc etc died. http://www.jtauber.com/familytree/medical.html#S Colleen

    1. Today's questions.
    2. Frank Cardiff
    3. G'day Since a lot of people on this list are still a bit timid, I thought I'd stir things up a bit by writing to Colleen via this list rather than direct. Just in case some of you are still hesitant, this is what can come from a bit of discussion. No doubt more will follow. Costley's Genealogy Surnames lists Goulburn names. Not sure of period covered but there are apparently 26 references to Walker. It is underlined and no doubt a cllick will reveal more. Costley's Genealogy Pages http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/4134/ Now, re that doubtful name, (Wagon or Wyong Creek) try Geographical Names Board of NSW http://www.lic.gov.au/gnb/search.htm Also, try Claim a Convict http://users.bigpond.net.au/convicts/ Check this page also for convict partners, permission to marry etc. Frank Cardiff East Gosford NSW 2250 Australia

    1. Re: GEDCOM ...how can I download it?
    2. Juliette Hendry
    3. Dear Jenny and fellow list-ers, A GEDCOM is usually read within a genealogy program, for example, Brother's Keeper, PAF, Family Tree Maker, and others. If you don't already have a genealogy program, software can be downloaded; some are free; a useful list is given on Cora Num's site: http://www.coraweb.com.au/software.htm If you already have one of these programs, the basic method is to go to FILE and select IMPORT, then choose GEDCOM and then make appropriate choices to select and import your gedcom. NOTE: If you already have a database in your genealogy program, it would be a good idea to view your gedcom by opening a new file rather than import your gedcom data into your existing database. Our local computer group website has prepared a page of links and basic how-to and some of the links provided give step-by-step instruction on importing and exporting a gedcom. Here's the GEDCOM Page: http://www.angelfire.com/mt/forbesnewbies/gedcom.html There is also a very handy program made especially to view a gedcom: Dynamic Family Tree Compiler http://www.linktop.demon.co.uk/dftcom2/ Do hope some of this helps someone. I'm no expert but I have discovered how useful gedcoms are and would encourage others to have a go! Juliette Forbes NSW
