    3. They are at the National Archives. You give them the name of the person, its on a microfilm and they will tell you if the file is open access. If it is you get to see it. If not you have to wait. Does anyone know if there were proper records kept of immigrants in early 1960's ? In this case last port would be Finland. How could one find where they are stored ? Who would be in charge on these records? (to write or ring) Would such a person be allowed to see their (&/or husband's) records? I would be most grateful for any answers to these questions as a Finnish lady who immigrated with her husband in the early 1960's, is now told there is no record of her entry, but the husband is listed. She is not allowed to become an Australian citizen, vote, receive a Passport etc and was told she is 'illegal' even though they have lived here over 40 years, bought property etc. Any help gratefully received. 1. Orlando Thornber
    2. ian
    3. Hello Barbara & List I found the following in the 1871 & 1881 Census for England. It sounds very much like your Orlando's family. It is possible that Orlando went to Stroud district in NSW when he first came to Australia and that is why his family thought he had been born there! It is such an unusual name and I could not see a death of a William or Sarah Thornber (Orlando's parents) in NSWBDM which could indicate that Orland immigrated either as a single man or with a new bride between 1871 and 1876. I could only see the births of Bertha & Charles in 1876; Alice in 1881; Willie in 1883 and Percy in 1886 in NSWBDM. I could not find a marriage for an Orlando Thornber in NSWBDM or in the UKBDM site. I did find a marriage of a William Thornber to Sarah Storey in the Burnley Register Office (Lancashire) in 1849 in the UKBDM site. The 1871 Census info: William Thornber, 42yrs. Born c1829 in Sabden, Lancashire. Head. Married. Bread maker. Sarah <Thornber>, 45yrs. Born c1826 in Padiham. Lancashire. Wife. Married. Cotton weaver. Orlando Thornber, 19yrs. Born c1852 in Padiham, Lancs. Son. Single. Cotton weaver. Ebenezer Thornber, 14yrs. Born c1856 in Padiham, Lancs. Son. Single. Cotton Weaver. Sarah A. Thornber, 7yrs. Born c1864 in Padiham, Lancs. Daughter. Scholar. The family were living in a single dwelling at 6 Wellington Street, New Accrington, Lancashire. The 1881 Census info: William Thornber. 52yrs. Born c1829 in Sabden, Lancs. Head. Married. Cotton weaver. I could not find his wife, Sarah and he may have been a widow even though it says he was married. Sarah A. Thornber. 17yrs. Born c1864 in Padiham, Lancs. Daughter. Single. Cotton weaver. They were living at 12 (Ightenhill ?) Street, Padiham, Lancs. Also the separate household of: Ebenezer Thornber. 25yrs. Born c1856 in Padiham, Lancs. Head. Married. Cotton weaver. Emma <Thornber>. 24yrs. Born c1857 in Stockport, Cheshire. Wife. Married. Cotton spinner. The family were living in Cheadle. Orlando Thornber was not found in the 1881, 1891 or 1901 Censuses (on-line). I also found the death of William Thornber, age 72yrs. Registered in Burnley district, lancs. in the September qtr of 1901. Hope this is your family Regards Wendy McKenzie PS if you think this is your family I can send you links to view the census info for a 24hour period ----- Original Message ----- From: "Barbara B." <bbanar@tpg.com.au> To: <AUS-NSW-CENTRAL-COAST-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 15, 2005 11:42 PM Subject: [ANCC] Thornber > Hi List, > > I would like to post my interest which is Orlando Thornber. > Orlando was my Great Grandfather, and going by his death certificate he > was born in Stroud, NSW in 1849. > His father was William Thornber and his mother was Sarah Story. > His wife was named Eliza, and they had five children named: > Bertha, Charles, Alice, Willie and Percy. > > Unfortunately, I have been unable to find the registration of his birth in > NSW nor in the UK. > Any thoughts in how I may trace this gentleman would be greatly > appreciated. > > Thank you, > Barbara/Queensland > > > ==== AUS-NSW-CENTRAL-COAST Mailing List ==== > For other AUS mailing lists check out: > http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/AUS > > ============================== > Search the US Census Collection. 3. Hello everyone. I am a new subscriber and was wondering if anyone could help me out please with Death at Gosford. I believe that a relative may have been involved in a hit and rain in Gosford at some time. This guy was born 1962 in New Zealand. Came across to Australia and all I know is that he fathered a child here, so that must surely make the death of this man from at least 1980. Is there any one that is able to have a look at any records in the Gosford area for me please. If you could email me I will then let you know his name. Thank you anyone that is able to help in some small way. Rhonda ( Hervey Bay )

    2. Willow and Damien Aliento-Prokop
    3. G'day everyone, I am looking for more information on my great-great grandparents and their ancestry and also their lives. They are William George Cole who was 23 on 25 September 1890 when my great-grandfather Harold J E W I Cole was born at Peats Ferry Brooklyn William was a fisherman, who was born at Peats ferry He married Bridget Clotilda Mary magdalene KELLY (who was 26 when she had Harold and was born at nearby Popran Creek) on 28 Jan 1887 at Sydney. They had one other daughter. The info all comes from harold's birth cert which I just procured from our BDM. If anyone knows ayahting about COLE family who were inolved in fishing, and also Kelly family at Popran Creek, that would be excellent. I am also hoping to be able to learn more aboutt he time and place they lived in. My grandmother (Harold's daughter) June Sheila Cole (married name JOHNSTON) took me down there once or twice, so I could muck about on a boat on the river, but never talked much about them. I'd also love to connect with anyone related to this mob, as we lost touch with nana's family when she passed away in 1984. Harold became a grocer after he returned from World War one. any info much muchly appreciated! Blessed be all, willow Mummulgum Australia

    3. Dear List members I am trying to find details on my ggrandfather, David Godfrey Pryor, and his membership of a Lodge at Gosford in the 1920s, 1930s. He died on 3 January 1937 and I have part of an obituary from a newspaper, most likely a Gosford one, but it could have been a Maitland or Quirindi one. It states in part....."Deceased was a member of the Loyal Orange Lodge for more than 25 years and was a past Master of the Gosford Lodge....He was also a trustee of the Gosford Methodist Church." DG Pryor and his son Tom actually built the Methodist Church in Donnison Street. Does anyone know anything about the LOYAL ORANGE LODGE in Gosford and how I would go about researching DG Pryor's involvement? I have recently read the book "Masonry in the Central Coast 1892-1992" part of a series of Historical Records of the Central Coast. The book is basically about Masonry but has a small piece on Loyal Orange Lodge which does not have a lot of detail. Thank you to anyone with suggestions. Vicki

    1. Re: [ANCC] DIGNEY
    2. Liz Parkinson
    3. Hi Gwen and listers ANY of those names are probably better than "Yow Yow", which was the name chosen by an owner of one of the earliest subdivisions in the vicinity, Henry Ferdinand Halloran. It was further round, in today's Davistown, and is of course "Woy Woy" spelt backwards. HFH lived in Sydney, and had owned Portion 116 of 100 acres, formerly a grant to Robert Henderson. He probably didn't have a say when Davistown was chosen as the name for the whole suburb, including his specific spot, as I'm sure the residents would have welcomed the chance to dump his designation! He began subdiving there in 1911, and the land was then described as being at "Yow Yow, adjoining Davistown". Cheers Liz P Gwen Dundon wrote (in part) regarding the search for a name for today's Saratoga: >A petition was put forward by residents and land owners at >"Mount Pleasant, Woy Woy" in November 1910 for a post >office. The PM at Woy Woy ....... >recommended DIGNEY to be the postmaster..... >and up came the suggestions "Saratoga, Marlepool, >Harrogate, Grimston, Horaceville, Hawkesville and >Loydville." Out of these the PMG considered "Saratoga, >Marlepool and Grimston" (can you imagine the latter doing >anything for tourism?).

    1. DIGNEY
    2. G.Dundon
    3. Dear Listers, I am seeking a little information on HORACE A. DIGNEY who was the first postmaster at Saratoga and ran a ferry in connection with the mail service. A petition was put forward by residents and land owners at "Mount Pleasant, Woy Woy" in November 1910 for a post office. The PM at Woy Woy reported that about 80 residents would take advantage of a post office there, and he recommended DIGNEY to be the postmaster. When the matter was being considered, petitioners were required to choose a designation other than "Mount Pleasant" and they suggested "New Brighton" or "Farnley" but these names were in use elsewhere in Australia at that time. In 1911 the thinking caps went on again and up came the suggestions "Saratoga, Marlepool, Harrogate, Grimston, Horaceville, Hawkesville and Loydville." Out of these the PMG considered "Saratoga, Marlepool and Grimston" (can you imagine the latter doing anything for tourism?). It is interesting to conjecture that some of these place names may have had something to do with the background of certain residents involved. However, a lady name LOYDSTROM ran a boarding house at that location. "Farnley" was evidently the name of a home at Mount Pleasant occupied by petitioner Alfred HAWKESWORTH of the Technical College, Sydney, and his wife. ..both he and DIGNEY wrote from that address. Finally, the name Saratoga was selected. DIGNEY would have to run a launch. Saratoga Receiving Office opened on 16 October 1911 in charge of Horace DIGNEY. This information has come from the Saratoga Post Office History. The wharves were at New Brighton and Mt Pleasant. I have been told by a gentleman in his 90s that HORACE DIGNEY was an Englishman. In connection with my research into Brisbane Water and Tuggerah Lakes ferries, I am keen to obtain a photo of Mr DIGNEY and his launch, or either, and would be delighted if anyone can help please. For that matter, with any other local ferry pictures. Best wishes to all, Gwen

    1. John COCKCROFT
    2. ian
    3. Hello MargM & Listers Here is some information on John Cockcroft's convict background! Thanks to Lesley Uebal from the Rootsweb, Port Jackson Convict list for the research! John Cockcroft was sentenced to 14 years transportation at the West Riding Quarter Session in York, on 20 October 1834, for street robbery. John was a Butcher by trade, single and Protestant. He could read & write. I have found a few records of births of a John Cockcroft in Yorkshire c1810 that could be John, but as he is not a direct ancestor, I have not purchased his death certificate to verify, dates, places or parents. When he landed in Port Jackson per Westmoreland on 15 July 1835, he was 25 years old. John married Jane Ann Turner, daughter of William Turner per Grenada (1819) and Margaret Bates (B.C.), on 13 May 1846. The witnesses were John Broadbent and Ann Broadbent of Wyoming, and Mary Hagan of East Gosford. The women all signed with a cross. They married at the Church of England Kincumber. In 1847 John received a Conditional Pardon and in 1850 he received his Certificate of Freedom. Thanks to Gwen Dundon of this list; I have far more information on John & Jane's lives and children. Please contact me direct if you would like to know more. One of John & Janes daughters, Mary Ann, married Andrew HENNESSY and they lived in Brisbane Water/Gosford area. Regards Wendy McKenzie

    1. Re: Elizabeth MURRAy of Killcare
    2. Kay Williams
    3. WoW Gwen! Thanks so much: Elizabeth was the first woman to recognise the charms of living at Pearl Beach: She applied for a grant here in 1840, describing the land as " nearly opposite Mt Elliott". Unfortunately for Elizabeth, when her application was put to tender William Mosely, retired Sgt., who had 50 pounds to spare because of his service in the army as a sergeant was able to bid 75 pounds for the 50 acres, and she lost out. Mosely apparently never came here, and just used the deal as a way of cashing-in his 50 pounds remission, a before he ever received the deeds to the land he had resold it, again for 75 pounds, to William BARTON, father of Sir Edmund. It is doubtful the BARTONs ever made much use of the land either, as when Rock DAVIS applied in 1896 to have his 3 adjacent holdings (one to the south and 2 side by side to the north) converted to Torrens title he asked for the Barton grant as well, claiming that he had held "sole and undisturbed possession of such land since 1865" and his claim was uncontested by the BARTON family. Rock had bought his grants c early 1870s- I haven't yet established when, so he must have had his cattle on all the land from an earlier date. I know he acquired Blackwall Point 1862 and seems to have been grazing cattle here soon after, and timber-getting here, from c 1862- so maybe the BARTONs did visit sometime up to 1865.
