Hi everyone This is just a general query about opening hours, address, and help at the Gosford Family History Society ????? (I've forgotten the title). I may be able to find a free day a fortnight and will fortunately be in the Erina/Gosford area and would like to know more about the Society. If possible a general overview of what is available research wise. My particular interest at this moment is a convict - John GAY - from 1838. I know he has a brief connection with the coast and would like to gather some hard evidence (paper version). Also is there particular days or hours that someone is available to assist with queries. Many thanks in advance Maria Thomas Lake Munmorah NSW, Australia
Thanks very much for that snippet on the List, Marg, most interesting. I have not had a chance to look at the disks you very kindly gave me yet. Gene had a stroke last Friday and is still in Gosford Hospital, though he hopes to come home tomorrow if all goes well. It was apparently a slight one, but has affected his walking a little according to the physio-therapist. He will not be able to drive for a month, of course. We are both highly impressed with the care at Gosford Hos - and the up-to-date equipment etc in the Stroke Ward. I see that it is a Newcastle University teaching hospital now, and that the new extensions when completed will employ another 500 people. Best regards, Gwen

Hi Cecily Were these the same GOLDIEs that lived in York St East Gosford, near the bottom of White Street. One of the girls, Mary, was in my year at Gosford High. we lived not far away in Frederick St. My maiden name was ROGERS. What was yours? You are only a couple of years older than I am and I grew up in East Gosford. Interestingly my ancestor is also a John SMITH, butcher from East Gosford, but not your John SMITH. Have you looked at the Central Coast pre 1901 pioneer register. there are quite a few GOLDIES mentioned there? Judy Gifford researching ROGERS SMITH CAIN, all of East Gosford
I am trying to trace my husbands family who were all born at Gosford. Unfortuneately his grandfather was JOHN SMITH who I believe was born at Wilberforce. He married Mary Helen GOLDIE at Ourimbah in 1877 at Gosford, who was born at Kangy Angy, and they had a dairy farm at Wyong Creek. Their children were, 1 Hannah, married Arthur MARSHALL at Ryde 2 Cyrus, married Cassandra CHASELING at Gosford and had a daughter called Adeline and a son Wilfred both born at Gosford. 3 Florence married Claude PARKER ? 4 Oliver 5 Leonard 6 Ruby 7 Robin, my husband's father 8 Persia married Charles WILSON and owned several butcher shops around the Gosford area. I believe several of these families remained in the Gosford area for some time and would love to hear from any of their desendants. Also any information about the GOLDIE family. I was born (1939) and raised in Gosford and both my parents died there. Unfortuneately these families were before my time. Cecily Smith
Hello MargM & Listers I am trying to determine if a William P. Morris, who died at Morrisett via Gosford in 1919 is one of my immediate family. On the NSWBDM registration, it says his parents were William & Sarah Creighton (which matches). This William P. Creighton, may have married a Jane Young and had the following children- Ernest W. Creighton (1891); Robert L. Creighton (1893); Alice A. Creighton (1896); Anthony R. Creighton (1897) ; Edwin G. Creighton (1898). Can anyone shed some light on this man in the Gosford/Central Coast area? It may be that he moved there from the Sydney region after 1898 as his birth, marriage and at least the births of the above children were in the Sydney region. It is possible that some of his children moved to the Central Coast as well. Are any of the above names familiar to anyone? Any leads would be appreciated, Regards Wendy McKenzie

Dear Listers Here is an excuse for a nice day out ! The Pearl Beach community has formed a Heritage Committee and on 16-17th April will be holding a display in the Community Hall, Diamond Road 9am-5pm Sat & Sun. We would welcome contact with anyone researching family who have lived at Pearl Beach at any time. We are also photographing all the houses in Pearl Beach (it is 80 years after the first land subdivision this year) and hope to establish the history of residence in each house, We are also interested to hear from anyone with any information regarding activities at Pearl Beach (eg the RSL club, the surf club the shops etc) and hope to take oral histories from older residents (past and present). we want information on the earliest grants (William MOSELY & William BARTON and Rock DAVIS plus of course Elizabeth MURRAY nee EVANS) and any references to early Pearl Beach would be gratefully received. The exhibition will be opened at 2pm Saturday by Chris MASTERS, ABC journalist and several books on pearl Beach will be available for sale: Pearl Beach- Early Days by Ben SMITH Pearl Beach Legacy by Joan Webb (story of Minard Crommelin and the Arboretum and National Park) Gwen Dundon's wonderful book "Shipbuilders of Brisbane Water" will also be featured, and some copies are still available. . All are welcome to attend. Self guided tours of the Arboretum and the village's Significant Trees and a great restaurant and cafe make this a great way to spend a day! Hi everyone, I have just joined the list, I am trying to find information on my ggrandfather, Neils Peter Andersen aka Captain Peter Anderson who resided at Alexandria in New South Wales from 1879 to 1928 when he died. He worked for the North Coast Steam Ship Navigation Company and sailed along the coast of New South Wales as well as foreign ports. Some of the ships he captained were the Tintenbar, Bonalbo, Dorrigo, Excelsior, Karuah, Corea, Canonbar and Coombar. He has a huge monument for him at Botany cemetery. I have read the Northern River Run, but was wondering if anybody out there has ever come across his name. We have been researching him for years but he has remained illusive. I actually read through the minute books of the NCSN and was able to locate him but only as mention of captains reports. If anybody out there can assist me in any way with advice I would be so greatful. Maureen
Thank you for the welcome to your list. My grandfather was Joseph William John BOOTH and he built and operated the hall at Hardys Bay for many years. Born in UK, went to the Boer War, then to Australia, married, off to the Great War and tried to enlist in the 2nd World War. He worked on the Gosford - Kilcare road during the depression. He wrote articles in the SMH under the name "Zambesi Joe". Tales of Africa, as he stayed on a bit after the Boer War. I am yet to see any of these articles! His first house in the area was called "Zambesi" and it was situated behind the hall. My mother and her brothers went to school at Pretty Beach. Her teacher a Mr. Allan. He later built "Twin Trees" in The Crescent at Kilcare. Many pleasant childhood holidays spent there. I have early photos of the hall and family. Kind regards, Bill Johnson. Dear Ian and List, I would like to thank you firstly for your prompt response to my family interest, Orlando Thornber. Ian, you have given me so much information, I have not had the time to digest it , so if you would bear with me I shall get back to you after all my smiling of appreciation has calmed. Regards, Barbara/ Queensland ----- Original Message ----- From: ian To: AUS-NSW-CENTRAL-COAST-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, February 16, 2005 8:42 AM Subject: [ANCC] Orlando Thornber Hello Barbara & List I found the following in the 1871 & 1881 Census for England. It sounds very much like your Orlando's family. It is possible that Orlando went to Stroud district in NSW when he first came to Australia and that is why his family thought he had been born there! It is such an unusual name and I could not see a death of a William or Sarah Thornber (Orlando's parents) in NSWBDM which could indicate that Orland immigrated either as a single man or with a new bride between 1871 and 1876. I could only see the births of Bertha & Charles in 1876; Alice in 1881; Willie in 1883 and Percy in 1886 in NSWBDM. I could not find a marriage for an Orlando Thornber in NSWBDM or in the UKBDM site. I did find a marriage of a William Thornber to Sarah Storey in the Burnley Register Office (Lancashire) in 1849 in the UKBDM site. The 1871 Census info: William Thornber, 42yrs. Born c1829 in Sabden, Lancashire. Head. Married. Bread maker. Sarah <Thornber>, 45yrs. Born c1826 in Padiham. Lancashire. Wife. Married. Cotton weaver. Orlando Thornber, 19yrs. Born c1852 in Padiham, Lancs. Son. Single. Cotton weaver. Ebenezer Thornber, 14yrs. Born c1856 in Padiham, Lancs. Son. Single. Cotton Weaver. Sarah A. Thornber, 7yrs. Born c1864 in Padiham, Lancs. Daughter. Scholar. The family were living in a single dwelling at 6 Wellington Street, New Accrington, Lancashire. The 1881 Census info: William Thornber. 52yrs. Born c1829 in Sabden, Lancs. Head. Married. Cotton weaver. I could not find his wife, Sarah and he may have been a widow even though it says he was married. Sarah A. Thornber. 17yrs. Born c1864 in Padiham, Lancs. Daughter. Single. Cotton weaver. They were living at 12 (Ightenhill ?) Street, Padiham, Lancs. Also the separate household of: Ebenezer Thornber. 25yrs. Born c1856 in Padiham, Lancs. Head. Married. Cotton weaver. Emma <Thornber>. 24yrs. Born c1857 in Stockport, Cheshire. Wife. Married. Cotton spinner. The family were living in Cheadle. Orlando Thornber was not found in the 1881, 1891 or 1901 Censuses (on-line). I also found the death of William Thornber, age 72yrs. Registered in Burnley district, lancs. in the September qtr of 1901. Hope this is your family Regards Wendy McKenzie PS if you think this is your family I can send you links to view the census info for a 24hour period ----- Original Message ----- From: "Barbara B." <bbanar@tpg.com.au> To: <AUS-NSW-CENTRAL-COAST-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 15, 2005 11:42 PM Subject: [ANCC] Thornber > Hi List, > > I would like to post my interest which is Orlando Thornber. > Orlando was my Great Grandfather, and going by his death certificate he > was born in Stroud, NSW in 1849. > His father was William Thornber and his mother was Sarah Story. > His wife was named Eliza, and they had five children named: > Bertha, Charles, Alice, Willie and Percy. > > Unfortunately, I have been unable to find the registration of his birth in > NSW nor in the UK. > Any thoughts in how I may trace this gentleman would be greatly > appreciated. > > Thank you, > Barbara/Queensland > > > ==== AUS-NSW-CENTRAL-COAST Mailing List ==== > For other AUS mailing lists check out: > http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/AUS > > ============================== > Search the US Census Collection.
