Dear All, Yes - there is a new virus out there: Bugbear. It was discovered/came to light yesterday. Information on it is available at http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.bugbear@mm.html You are all reminded that if you are on the internet you should have good anti-virus protection. You are also all reminded that virus-discussion is off-topic on Rootsweb lists without first discussing it off-list with the list-admin. This is as sometimes the warnings to the list can cause more damage than an actual virus (or hoax warning). In this case yes, I am getting bombarded with the virus. I suspect everyone is. I am posting this note as the virus incorrectly appears to come from Rootsweb because it piggy-backs itself on a previous Rootsweb message that is in the mailbox of the person who has just caught the virus. People receiving the virus have been concerned that it is coming THROUGH Rootsweb, but this is not the case. It is coming direct to you from someone who has Rootsweb messages in their intray/mailboxes in their own computer, plus your own e-mail address somewhere there in their own computer too. It also appears to have been sent by someone other than the infected person. Sometimes an experienced list-admin can identify who sent it, usually not. Which is why one of the worst things that you can do is send off e-mails to your whole address book, as you are sending ALL your friends' e-mail addresses to a whole lot of people. If one of them gets the virus, and your e-mail with all those addresses is in their computer - out goes the virus to you. Again: If you are on the net, you have to have good anti-virus protection If you do not have good virus protection and receive a message that has a prepend (name in [square brackets]) in front of it from a list you do not usually receive, in the current climate it will be the virus. Delete it without opening it. You may, however receive it in other forms. If it has a three part attachment, a .scr or .exe attachment - it is fairly certain to be it as well. But it may also appear in other forms. Get good anti-virus protection. It does not come THROUGH Rootswewb lists, just resends list messages that are in the infected person's mailbox.
