The progenitor of the DREW family in Australia was George DREW who arrived in Sydney as a convict on 1 Jan 1835 per Henry Porcher. He was a native of London, born abt 1816 and a shoemaker when he was convicted. After arrival, he married Mary CUMMINS on 2 Aug 1842 and together they produced 10 children, seven of whom survived into adulthood. Initially the family settled in Sydney and then about 1845 they moved to Penrith. In 1872, Grevilles Post Office directory shows George Drew as a bootmaker in Ilford; and his son George as an ostler in Cunningham's Creek. George's children married and started their own families in the Mudgee, Wellington, Gilgandra area. The names of the children and their spouses (where known) are as follows: Thomas Daswell DREW married Sarah Ann SHANKLIN in 1867 and settled in Gilgandra James DREW married Ellen O'MARA in 1871 and settled in the Rylstone, Hartley & Mudgee Jemima DREW married Henry CAFÉ in 1867 and settled in the Rylstone/Gulgong area John DREW married Annie ASHCROFT in 1873 and settled in Rylstone, Tuena & Mudgee George Henry DREW married Bridget KEARIN in 1869 and settled in the Wellington area Mary DREW Annie DREW Other families that married George's grandchildren include James McLEOD (married Mary Jane in 1892 at Glen Innes); Francis Henry DONNOLLEY (who married Annie in 1908 at Rylstone); Mary J. NORTHCOTE (who married Thomas H in 1902 in Sydney); and Richard W. FIRTH (who married Ellen in 1920 at Hamilton). I would very much like to hear from anyone researching the DREW, SHANKLIN, CAFÉ, ASHCROFT, KEARIN, McLEOD, NORTHCOTE or FIRTH families. Any information regarding the activities of the DREW family would be welcome. Brian Donnolley (near Seattle USA)
