    1. [NSW-C] Townsend - Menzies
    2. Glenn Townsend via
    3. Good evening listers,                                  I'm researching the family of my 2x Great Grandparents, Thomas Townsend and his third wife, Lucy Ann Mutton. In particular, I'm hoping to find information regarding the family of one of their granddaughters, Agatha Menzies (nee Townsend) who died in Wagga in 1964. I believe that Agatha and her husband, Richard Travaskin Menzies had three daughters: Elizabeth, Lorna and Dorothy. I am hoping to get in touch with them or their families in order to assist me in gathering information about the family. Sincerest regards,Glenn Townsend

    1. [NSW-C] Cowra(The Rocks)-Merriganowry-Glen Logan circa1840-1850 squatters runs
    2. Tony Moore via
    3. Dear Friends, Great grandfather's birth (W R MOORE), is shown as Glen Logan in 1841 (Glen Logan civil parish is north west of modern Cowra.) WR's father's occupation is given as "merchant" on the 1843 baptism record of then young Colin Stewart, Presbyterian Minister . An earlier family researcher (now deceased) put his birth at Merriganowry. Possibly family tradition, but cannot be sure. The family arrived from Co. Cavan, Ireland in 1840 as bounty passengers, he a shepherd and wife Sarah a house servant. They were sponsored through A.B. Smith & Co. Both stated that they could read and write. I suspect because they could read and write the "merchant" meant that he managed the "store / shop" for one of the squatters. The prominent initial squatters in that region were Grant, Ranken, Redfern and Sloan. I suspect there were little or no fences. My understanding of the land issues in that region suggests that the squatters runs seemed to have "very flexible" boundaries and descriptions may even have overlapped. The Lachlan River was the "limits of location" or "boundaries of settlement" of the colony. If you crossed the Lachlan to the south-west, you were outside these limits. Cowra as a village didn't exist at that time. The book "Cowra on the Lachlan" by J Marriott, which I own, is very light on details for that period. Wm MOORE is mentioned pg 27, but that is 1854 in Cowra village. Question 1: are there any MAPS, SKETCHES, DESCRIPTIONS etc because all this region was officially unsurveyed until well into the 1850's??? The earliest Civil parish map I can locate dated as 1884. Question 2: WR's father, William, probably overseer and/or store-keeper and or manager for one of the squatters but WHICH ONE??? Where do I start looking ?? I favour John Grant, an Irishman, from Merriganowry Run, but no proof. There is also the possibility that it was on Arthur Ranken's squatters run. Any ideas and suggestions please. Thanks in anticipation, Tony Moore (Castle Hill, NSW)

    3. Hi Mike, I subscribed to AUS-NSW-Central, but have never asked any questions, so maybe I should have! I have a pretty good lineage and history for my family and my wife, but I have a problem with one line. My wife is a ROGAN ( going back to a convict John Rogan who arrived 1806 on "Fortune")and her grandmother is Mary Isobel KERR (b 1916 Kyogle D 1991 Griffith). Her line goes back to Thomas KERR who arrived on the "Triton" as a free settler in 1829. Mary Kerr's mother was Ella Gertrude CASEY (b 1888 Port Macquarie d1962 Brisbane). Now the problem we have is the parents of Ella. Patrick Joseph CASEY (b1855 Maitland d1939 Kyogle) and Ellen O'CONNOR (b1859 Morpeth and D 1933 Kyogle). We have a "pencilled" idea for the father Patrick, with his father being Matthew from Dublin Ireland, and mother Ann "Jane" STEWART b 1834 Belfast - but this is not certain. We have "pencilled" the parents of Ellen being John O'Connor and mother being Anne Marie Craig -but we are not certain. I don't know if you have any ideas for these regions - but help would be appreciated. 3. Dawn, They’re elusive, aren’t they! Only one marriage of Moore to Spears in NSW bdm, in 1935, not yours. No John and Thelma Moore at the same address in 1949 electoral roll. What is your source for the marriage? What else do you know about them? There is a John Joseph Moore in Public service lists in 1955, 56, 58, 59, 60, working in the housing dept. Lyn

    2. Hello, I live in Dubbo so what can I help you with, I have no idea what you are interested in. >From the local cemetery headstone records- there is a headstone, obviously with details missing that is for the infant children of R & C Booth, in the Catholic section (no further details), Albert Booth died 23/5/1964 aged 81 years, Jessie Constance 16/7/1980 94 years, and Robert Dugald 32 years Sgt 2/5th Ind. Co. AIF (interred at Rookwood) - these 3 buried in the Presbyterian Section all together (I imagine this to be the local solicitor of Booth, Brown & Samuels and his wife and perhaps son). Also in another Presbyterian section John Robert Booth 2/3/1901, 49 years of Warlaby, Dubbo. I can look at other things if you tell me who you are interested in. 3. Hi Jennifer, Thank you so much for replying to my email so quickly - I only know as far back as Robert and Catherine Booth (my great grandparents) - although I'm not sure how many children they had and what their names were - and was wondering whether there was any record of their parents and their grandparents who first came to Dubbo from Scotland. The names of the families were McVicar and McKinnon and, although my mother Sheila Booth, who was one of the 6 Booth children - 5 of them girls - from Albert Dubbo Booth and Jessie Constance Booth (it was their brother Robert Dugald Booth who died aged 32 in 1943) told us some of the history of the family, I am really keen to find out a bit more of the earlier family who settled in Dubbo. The names of a property called Boothenba are known in the family and Albert and Jessie lived at Glenfinnan, 101 Cobra Street, Dubbo until it was pulled down and a motel was built on the site sometime in the 1970's. If there were any old photos of the house and the area and Dubbo around the time my mother was young - she was born in 1914 - it would be so good to have them. So any information about the early years of the settlers in Dubbo would be lovely to hear about if there was any. Yes my great grandfather founded the solicitors Booth, Brown and Samuels and my grandfather Albert Dubbo Booth was a solicitor there until he died. > From: hilary24@tpg.com.au > To: aus-nsw-central@rootsweb.com > Date: Tue, 25 Mar 2014 09:35:14 +1100 > Subject: Re: [NSW-C] Booth family > > Hello, I live in Dubbo so what can I help you with, I have no idea what you > are interested in. > >From the local cemetery headstone records- there is a headstone, obviously > with details missing that is for the infant children of R & C Booth, in the > Catholic section (no further details), Albert Booth died 23/5/1964 aged 81 > years, Jessie Constance 16/7/1980 94 years, and Robert Dugald 32 years Sgt > 2/5th Ind.
