Hi List, I'm having trouble finding the arrival into Australia , and the death of, William BARNES, b. 1836, Birmingham, England. His parents were James and Ann (nee Keele or Neele.) William married Mary EVETTS, 27th Nov 1856 in Sydney, and he is on the UK 1851 census, so his journey here was between mid 1851 and Nov 1856. On the 1851 census he is listed as a scholar, and on his marriage cert. a brick-layer. I haven't been able to find his family on a later UK census, so perhaps they all came to Australia together? I have no records to say that William's family members did come here. They were James Barnes 39..father Ann Barnes 39...mother William Barnes 15....scholar James Barnes 9 Ann Barnes 7 Alfred Barnes 5 Susanna Barnes 2 William and Mary had 5 children, 4 born Chippendale, and the last one, James BARNES b 1864, Tamerang, Shoalhaven. James is the ancestor of my in-law. He married Elizabeth Bayley, and I believe that family is well researched. No one seems to know about the life of William BARNES and Mary Evetts. Does anyone have any ideas as to why he might have gone to Shoalhaven/Tamerang in 1864.....I wonder if he lived his life there? At that time he was a brick-layer. I am helping an in-law with his research, and he isn't able to give me any more details, William is his g/g.father, and he would like to know where he is buried, and also his wife Mary. I'd appreciate help with suggestions as to what cemeteries to search in the Shoalhaven area please? I have no idea as to when William died, but it was after 1864. I've looked at Ancestry, FMP, and other online shipping lists without any success....also their cemetery lists, and familysearch. There is a William BARNES arriving on the "Meridian" in 1852, he's not ours... Thanks for any ideas and help with finding out more about William BARNES. Cheers, Jill Brisbane
Hi Jill, Firstly, the township is Tomerong (not Tamerang), about 20km south of Nowra, first settled 1855 - it seems likely a bricklayer may have been in high demand. Tomerong means "tall timbers", and it is still a State Forest. The Tomerong Cemetery was gazetted in 1891 so from 1862 burials took place on the private land of the Parnell property; as far as I can see, there is nothing for BARNES in the Shoalhaven area, so they may not have stayed. There are a few contacts listed in Tomerong who may be able to give you more information on the family - Tomerong: Local History - 1855 was first land sales http://home.exetel.com.au/tomerong/history2/ History and book "From Bullocks to Bypass" http://www.tomerong.com/ http://aplaceof.info/tomerong/fair/070922history.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomerong,_New_South_Wales The only other arrival I could find that would fit, is at the Victorian Archives - Wm BARNES, aged 19, arrived aboard "British Trident" in September 1856 (ref 111 001); no other family members with him, maybe they followed later when he was settled?
