Thanks Lyn, I certainly thought it had always been there in the online search returns .... but understanding that the 'district' given is where registered, not necessarily where born or died. You're absolutely right about 'privacy' nonsense -- IF that is why they do it (for as you say these things are announced in newspapers). Yes John it has always be there. Nice if you live in NZ births to 1961 - marriages to 1932 and Deaths to present day.
