    1. [AUS-NSW] Arrivals from India about 1854
    2. Joan Birtles
    3. Hello Listers For many years I've been searching for the arrival from India to Australia of my gg grandparents John & Paulina Lynch and their daughter Deborah Jane b 1852 in Madras, India. I've searched assisted immigration into NSW & VIC, unassisted into NSW & VIC on-line and have been through many rolls at the State Records NSW over the years for a quite a few years after 1853, just in case their daughter's death record was incorrect in that she was supposed to have been aged 2 when she arrived. John had "purchased" himself out of the HEIC army in Madras early 1852 so must have had some money to be able to do this as I believe it cost about 20 pounds. He was shown as a plasterer on Deborah's baptism record in November 1852. Also John died between 1859 when his 2nd daughter Paulina was born at Ultimo and 1865 when his widowed wife remarried. I have not been able to find any death record despite purchasing a group search of the LYNCH's during this time period from the Registry of BDM's. I feel they must have paid their own passage and the possibility is that they were only shown as "so many cabin & so many steerage" without any names mentioned hence the reason I've not been able to find them. Has anyone any further ideas on where I may search for their arrival? Thank you Joan -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter. We are a community of 6 million users fighting spam. 3. Hi Joan, Have you searched through the Shipping Gazettes? They only go up to 1855, but should cover the period of the LYNCH arrivals. No shortcuts, you will have to click onto each one and search for shipping arrivals - http://www.nla.gov.au/ferg/issn/14403897.html There are seven hits in Victoria for death of John LYNCH between 1859 and 1865. You might be able to narrow the search if you can provide any further details such as parents' names - https://online.justice.vic.gov.au/bdm/index-search?action=getHistIdxSearchCriteria Do you know his parents' names? There are also a few possible deaths on the NSW BMD indexes for the death of John LYNCH in the timeframe you have given. No luck finding his burial in any of the online cemetery databases. Good luck, it sounds like you have another puzzle to unravel. Best wishes, Trish Nowra NSW > For many years I've been searching for the arrival from India to Australia > of my gg grandparents John & Paulina Lynch and their daughter Deborah Jane > b > 1852 in Madras, India. > > I've searched assisted immigration into NSW & VIC, unassisted into NSW & > VIC > on-line and have been through many rolls at the State Records NSW over the > years for a quite a few years after 1853, just in case their daughter's > death record was incorrect in that she was supposed to have been aged 2 > when > she arrived. > > Joan

    3. Joan - have Deborah's death 1898/10498, Newtown, parents shown as John/Pauline, do you have her death certificate from the BDM New South Wales. Have you also tried the British Army in Australia site? or the www.records.nsw.gov.au Jenelle. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joan Birtles" <joanbirtles@bigpond.com> To: <aus-nsw@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, September 01, 2009 4:44 PM Subject: [AUS-NSW] Arrivals from India about 1854 > Hello Listers > > For many years I've been searching for the arrival from India to Australia > of my gg grandparents John & Paulina Lynch and their daughter Deborah Jane > b > 1852 in Madras, India. > > John had "purchased" himself out of the HEIC army in Madras early 1852 so > must have had some money to be able to do this as I believe it cost about > 20 > pounds. 3. Hi Jenelle Many thanks, yes I do have Deborah's death record. She only had 1 child, a boy Edgar Julius Sylvester Lynch my grandfather. I also have the records of her sister Paulina & her marriage & child..she married a seaman/cook from the USA and eventually settled in the USA. I also have Paulina's death record i.e. the mother of Deborah & Paulina. Paulina Snr remarried a George Ettienne Loyau in 1865 and had more children. The info I am missing is just the arrival in Australia from India of John, Paulina & Deborah Jane Lynch about 1854 and the death of John Lynch. Amazing to think I've been able to find so much about the family but not their arrival or John's death.
