Yes it could take a 20 or 30 years before freehold title was granted. The original purchaser was not necessarily the final owner as his CP rights could be transferred at any time to another party. John Ferry in his work notes a period of 27 years and eight 'owners'. (John Ferry 'NSW Land Records and Family History' in International Congress of Family History , 1988.). Terry -----Original Message----- From: aus-nsw-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-nsw-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Dianne Myers Sent: Sunday, 15 November 2009 7:34 PM To: AUS-NSW@rootsweb.com Subject: [AUS-NSW] Conditional Purchase Land In regards to Conditionally Purchased Land Archives in Brief 93 from State records states under Paying for the purchase "After three years the balance of the purchase had to be paid to the Colonial Treasurer together with a declaration that improvements had been undertaken on the land. There was an interest rate of 5% per annum. Payments could be made from year to year. In practice the balance of the purchase price, with interest, could be paid over an extended period. It was not unusual for 20 or 30 years to pass before freehold title was eventually granted." First paragraph says that the land must be paid for in full at the end of 3 years. Second paragraph says that it could take 20 or 30 years to complete payment. I am hoping that someone who understands CP land purchase in the 1870's in New England can explain this for me. How does it go from three years to 20-30 years? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
