    3. Hi Brian, With a name like SMITH its difficult to identify family members, so I'm not making much progress. Andrew SMITH married Sarah HASKINS 1881 West Bromwich. I couldn't find them on a passenger list into NSW 1881-1884 when their first child was born here. He remarried Elizabeth SCLANDERS in Lithgow-NSW in 1897. After a bit of searching, I found Robert and Barbara SCLANDERS as parents in death indexes with children James, Thomas and Elizabeth. Elizabeth SMITH, daughter of Robert/Barbara, died Newtown-NSW in 1914. They weren't married in NSW, none of the children born NSW. The son James operated a grocery store on Cooks River Road at St Peters, registered 1904, carried on by son James Sclanders and widow Fanny Ryland after his death (NSW Archives) Andrew SMITH died 1907 Woonona-NSW, a northern suburb of Wollongong, a major coal-mining area south of Sydney. You may be able to find a headstone transcription through the Council or FHS - http://memorialgardens.wollongong.nsw.gov.au/DeceasedSearch.htm Illawarra FHS, headstones Woonona Presbyterian - http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ausifhg/localrecords.html You've given five children to Andrew/Sarah - Bettie 1883, Annie 1885, Lily 1888, Alice 1891, and William 1894, all born Parramatta except Bettie. The NSW BDM site has the children of Andrew/Sarah listed as - 1884 - Martha R.E. Smith, Lithgow-NSW (would the letter E be for Elizabeth/Bettie?) 1885 - Annie M. Smith, Newtown-NSW 1888 - Lily E. Smith, St Peters-NSW 1891 - Alice F. Smith, Parramatta-NSW 1894 - William J. Smith, Parramatta-NSW 1896 - Sarah J. Smith, Newtown-NSW (only a possibility) Lithgow is a town in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney, also known for coal-mining. The other areas are suburbs of Sydney. The birth of Sarah J Smith is registered after her mother's death, assuming this child belongs in this family. If Sarah snr died in childbirth towards the end of the year, the baby's birth may not have been registered until the new year, and she was named for her mother? - just a thought. There were five deaths listed in 1895 for Sarah SMITH, so unsure which one you have picked up, but if it is the one registered at Redfern this is close to Newtown where baby was registered. I've only found one marriage for any of the children as the names are fairly common with more than one marriage to any of them. In 1918, Lily Emily SMITH married Frederick Edward CLARKE; Lily Emily CLARKE daughter of Andrew/Sarah, died Manly-NSW 1972. Frederick Edward CLARKE is listed at the Australian National Archives as born 22 September 1892 Glasgow-Scotland, Church of England, Fireman by trade; Service No 12136, enlisted Sydney 5 Feb 1920 for 7 years in the navy; next-of-kin Lily Clarke living at 8 Edmund Street Waverley NSW; he served on "Cerberus" and "Melbourne". I didn't find Lily's burial in Manly, Macquarie Park or Frenchs Forest - she may have been cremated; no death notice listed on Ryerson. You may need to purchase a few certificates to find more information. It is cheaper to use a transcription agent in NSW than to go through the Registry Office - http://www.transcriptions.com.au/ http://www.joymurrin.com.au/ Cheers Trish Nowra NSW > I'm trying to find detail of Andrew Smith who married Sarah Haskins in > Birmingham England before emigrating to the Sydney area were he was a > miner > dying in 1907. 3. Hi Trish Thank you for details, Sarah's parents were John and Jane so I use fathers name to locate death in NSW. Is there a site for a Sydney newspaper were I could send a message asking if anyone knew descendants of Andrew and Sarah Cheers Brian -----Original Message----- From: aus-nsw-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-nsw-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Trev Symonds Sent: 15 November 2009 23:13 To: aus-nsw@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [AUS-NSW] FW: Andrew Smith Hi Brian, With a name like SMITH its difficult to identify family members, so I'm not making much progress. 3. Hi again Brian, Okay, if his parents were John and Jane, then he wasn't the Andrew Smith who died in 1907 as his parents with Timothy/Jane. Correct death info - 1914, SMITH Andrew, parents John/Jane, Wollongong, Certificate No 13427/1914 Still in the coal mining area of Wollongong; interesting both he and Elizabeth seem to have died the same year. Rereading the notes I sent to you earlier, "they weren't married in NSW" wasn't quite clear, and referred to Elizabeth SCLANDERS parents Robert and Barbara, and not Andrew/Elizabeth. The Australian Family Tree Connections runs ads for those searching for descendants - http://www.aftc.com.au/ The Sydney Morning Herald is the largest newspaper in Sydney and goes Australia-wide - http://www.smh.com.au/ The Lists are a good place to find like-minded people, it just depends on whether descendants are researching at the same time as you are. Andrew Smith's death certificate may give you a lot more information and clues on where to go next, especially if the names of his married daughters help in identifying them in the records; especially if you are looking for Alice GUGELHEIM instead of Alice SMITH. NSW Death Certificates show - the name of deceased, date of death, place of death, age, occupation, cause of death, parents' names, spouse name, marriage details, childrens' names, number of children living/deceased, birthplace of deceased, last known residence, burial place including name of minister and undertaker. The information is only as good as the person providing the details.
