    3. Hi I am researching the CUNEO family. According to "Garibaldi revisited" in the Northern District Times of 14 May 2008, much of the research on the net is based on one article and is mistaken. This article says that John Cuneo (1825-1884) was born in Genoa and in 1854 came to Australia first in search of gold then moved to Sydney where he set up a business in the city as a grocer and importer of Italian sculpture. He married Jane Barton in 1856 and in 1861 became a naturalised Australian citizen that allowed him to own land. He moved to Hunters Hill where he began the Garibaldi Inn in 1861, substantially finished in 1869 but further rooms were added until 1881 when it was referred to as a 16-room stone hotel. Although the Inn closed in 1911, the building still stands having been Mrs Nelly Rehm's confectionary shop and then, from 1934 until 1976, was Taniane's greengrocery. The NSW BDM online index records John CUNEO as having married Jane BARON (not BARTON). Her death registration gives her father as Thomas. There appear to be many CUNEO descendants so I'm hoping to make contact with anyone else researching the family. Regards
