Hi Jo & Marg It's more work to search for a record, because as Marg says you have to put in a range of full dates. Though you don't have to enter leading zeros. But, the fact that you have to enter a full date means that the database is now indexed on the actual date of the event. As such, it means you can discover the date without having to purchase the certificate. Here's an example, using a search for Arthur Albert SHAMBLER whose registration number is 1890/5679. Once you know the year, search using just that year. 1/1/1890 to 31/12/1890. The record is found (though be aware that events towards the end of a year may have been registered in the following year, in which case this search will say 'not found'. Simply try 1/1/1889 to 31/12/1889 for example). Then try a 6-month period. In this example a search on 1/1/1890 to 30/6/1890 found the record again. Then try a 3-month period. 1/1/1890 to 31/3/1890 failed, and hence the event occurred between 1/4/1890 and 30/6/1890. Once you have the quarter, find the month. 1/4/1890 to 30/6/1890 worked, as did 1/5/1890 to 30/6/1890. But 1/6/1890 to 30/6/1890 failed, so the event took place in the previous month. Next, try a fortnight. I entered 1/5/1890 to 15/5/1890 and the event was found. Next, a week. I entered 1/5/1890 to 7/5/1890 and again the week was found. How you proceed from here is up to you but I usually work day to day within a week. The event was found in the period 6/5/180 to 7/5/1890, but failed on 7/5/1890 to 7/5/1890. Hence Arthur was born on 6 May 1890. So, although you have to do extra work, the new system does have offer you something in return. Just wish NSW would change their database too :-) Just a point. When narrowing down your range of dates, only change one or other of the Search from and Search to dates at a time. Good luck.
