Have just subscribed to this list as have found a death notice for Amy Ruth LESSINGTON in the SMH dated 6 November 1948. It states she died at a private hospital in Marrickville on 4 November & lived at 13 Nelson St Woollahra. Mother of Marjorie (Mrs. W.E. GRAHAM). I checked the NSW BDM website & it said her age was 85 making a birthdate of c1863. My gt.gt.grandfather James LESSINGTON who md Jane Ann MASON after the death of my gt.gt.grandmother had a daughter Amy Ruth b.22/8/1866 in Wellington NZ. I have no details on her later life so was wondering if this might be her. Be great to hear from anyone connected. Bruce Lissington Perth WA (ex NZ)

Thank you to Jenelle, Ellen and MargM. Plenty of sites to search, should keep me occupied for a while, hopefully with good results. Cheers Ian
Hi Listers, I once again ask for any information on a lass Sarah Lynch(ey), who in 1845 was working as a servant on Kennington Farm at Hexham which was owned by Captain Ranulph Dacre . Mrs Dacre spoke highly of Sarah's work and is quoted in memos written by the Maitland Magistrate to Sydney reporting on Sarah's rehabilitation, the last in April 1845. This girl was the subject of physical and sexual abuse after she had been illegally taken from NSW to the Bay of Islands in New Zealand. The perpetrator was the Honorary US Consul in Russell who was apparently never confronted over the affair. I have a number of memos written to and from the Sydney authorities from the time she left the orphan school as an apprentice to Mr Badgery, through to her "rescue" by a solicitor in Russell, to several covering her settling into work at Hexham. Sometime after bankruptcy in 1846 the Dacre family moved to New Zealand where they seem to have carved out a successful life. So far as I have ascertained Sarah did not accompany them. I found Sarah during my search for the siblings of my GG grandmother who had with a brother and a sister accompanied their convict mother from the Isle of Man in 1835. This girl was admitted to the Orphan Home about 9 days after the arrival of the Mary III on which they had been transported.. The family name "Lynchey" has morphed into "Lynch" in Ireland and both my GGG grandmother and my GG grandmother used Lynch intermittently with Lynchey on documents. I have found Sarah's baptism on the Isle of Man in 1826 which would have made her age in 1846 about 18 or 19 years. Peter Melbourne

Thanks for your reply, Wendy. I haven't been able to find another person of that name in same time-frame so I feel that it must be the same person. I just wonder how usual this would be, though, to be listed twice in the same year? The surname HEMPHILL seems so familiar and I am going through old photos trying to find the photo I have in my mind. Hello list, Would someone be able to give me the websites for new arrivals in NSW, Victoria and Brisbane please? Covering the years from 1855-1865. Tried the Victorian passenger site but kept bringing up a notice saying it was not, or could not, connect to the internet. Many thanks Ian McEachern Western Australia
Hello, It looks like I posted my original query more than 10 yrs. ago. But, to this date I still have not found or received any additional details about James CLARK or CLARKE. He is one of my "concrete-block walls put together with reinforced cement." No one knows where he was born or when he was born. We only have tidbits of information. He was in Rhode Island in ~1827, and married in a nearby Massachusetts town in 1829. Because the young widow was born in 1800, we can only guess he was born somewhere around 1800. "Rhoda" had 3, young children, and then she had a daughter with James. Then he disappeared. More than 10 yrs. ago I found a descendant of Rhoda, and she found this record: James CLARK, Rank: Greenhand, Ship Name: OCEAN Port of Registry: New Bedford, Whaling Ground: INDIAN Departure Date: 12/31/1844; Return Date: 11/7/1848 Remarks: DESERTED AT SYDNEY, NEW SOUTH WALES, 9/18/1845 .. At ~5 am this morning (New England), I was just browsing the Digest of this List. And I saw a note that there might have been a record for the arriving deserters in the 1840's / 1850's. Is this possible? I also noticed there is a record of people leaving NSW after 1852. I did a quick search and found the name James CLARK or CLARKE mentioned many times, but none were of the correct age (over Age 50). If I remember from 10 yrs. ago, researchers suggested it would be almost impossible to find any information on this James CLARK. I'm wondering if this is still true. Thank you for your time. Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) (on Lists and Boards for 14 yrs.; now an Admin for 11 Lists and 5 Boards) P.S. I probably mentioned before that James and Rhoda's daughter, Mary Anna CLARK, b~1837 MA, grew up to marry John DEXTER from Connecticut. In ~1885 they moved from CT to MA, and in ~1890 they took in a baby girl. They adopted her in 1892. They renamed her to Mary Anna Clark DEXTER. That little girl grew up to become my grandmother. (My educated-assumption is that the DEXTER's married daughter in CT had a pregnancy outside of her marriage. And, her parents took in the infant. Old photos show a strong family-resemblance.)

Hello Listers. I have a problem – My mother, Ellen Frances MOORE emigrated to Australia in 1928 to be a children’s nurse in Melbourne. Soon after arrival she moved to Sydney. Now, I know that she lived in Sydney’s eastern suburbs and I have found her in the 1930 electoral roll living at Novar South, Aston Gardens, Woollahra (occupation h.d.) I believe that this is my mother from anecdotal stories. I have also found her in the 1930 roll living with the HEMPHILL family 26, Wolseley Road, Lindfield, as a nurse. I am sure that my mother spoke of the HEMPHILL family and I am looking for a photo which I believe is the mother, father and a little daughter. Would it be possible to be included in the electoral rolls twice? And is anyone researching the HEMPHILLS? I am trying to trace my mother’s movements until the time she married at St. Luke’s, Clovelly in January, 1932. Any help would be really appreciated. Margery
