Hi Bob, There is no record in NSW for the death of Louisa Amy BRAGG, or for her marriage to James Wood BRAGG. James Wood BRAGG died 1938 (cert no 364/1938), son of Robert and Mary, registered in Sydney. There was nothing in the National Archives or NSW Archives for this couple, or death notices on the Ryerson Index. They had, I think, three children - 1904 - James A. BRAGG, son of James W/Amy L, born St Leonards-NSW (7020/1904) 1908 - Madeline A. BRAGG, daughter of James W/Amy L. born Chatswood-NSW (2751/1908) 1909 - Mary BRAGG died 1919, daughter of James/Louisa, Auburn-NSW (10560/1919) I couldn't find what became of James, and Mary obviously died as a child. There is a marriage for Madeline B. BRAGG to Henry S. BURTON in Redfern-NSW in 1930 (10022/1930). Also a marriage for Madeline Beatrice BURTON to Peter Milford HARRIS in Sydney in 1943 (7859/1943) Henry Silvester BURTON died 1941 at Chatswood (15763/1941), son of Silvester and Ellen. Also found the following item on the NLA Newspapers site - Report of an aeroplane accident - http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/1164066?searchTerm=%22james+bragg%22 UK information - On the 1881 census there is only one possible match for parents Robert/Mary BRAGG with son Robert - Robert Bragg, head, 50, b.Chaffcombe-Somerset, dairyman Mary Bragg, wife, 42, b.Membury-Devon James Bragg, son, 11, b.Membury-Devon, scholar John Bragg, son, 9, b.Broadwinsor-Dorset, scholar Alfred Pinney, servant, 14, b.Buckland St Mary-Dorset Dwelling: Vembury, Thorncombe-Dorset, RG11 2127/167 16 On Find My Past passenger lists, there was a departure of J.W. BRAGG from London to Sydney. No marriage in England on FreeBMD for James BRAGG to Louisa UNKNOWN. I couldn't find their marriage in NZ either. Hi. I have just found him on the NZSG disc, stating that his Probate is at the NZ Archives in Auckland. Do you have a copy of this. It does state that he is of Elizabeth Bay Sydney, or that could be where he died. He is listed as an engineer. I have an image of a memorial plaque inside Barlavigton Church, West Sussex which reads :- "In memory of Louisa Amy BRAGG who died on June 14th 1946 widow of James Wood BRAGG of Sydney Australia. Sometime of Barlavington Farm, she was, together with her husband a pioneer in the backblocks of New Zealand at the end of the last century.". Questions are these, are there any records of this lady and or her husband, where she lived in NSW and possibly her maiden name, so that I can discover when she migrated to either New Zealand or Australia. cheers Bob in Brisbane.
Hi Joan Edgar Julius SYLVESTER LYNCH ??? Do you know why he was given the name SYLVESTER? Hmmm.... I have a John LYNCH who was the second husband of Sarah Jane PENDERGAST m. 1825 at Windsor NSW; both lived and died at Wollombi, NSW, John in 1852. In 1906 when Sarah Jane's grand niece Louisa SYLVESTER (married a MARTIN) and grand nephew T J SYLVESTER (married a BURGESS) had a double wedding the party included the following LYNCHs were involved: Train bearers: "little Mollie Lynch" Groomsmen: R. Lynch & M. Lynch Coincidence or connection? Regards Ian Jordan 2009/9/2 Joan Birtles <joanbirtles@bigpond.com>: > Hi Jenelle > > Many thanks, yes I do have Deborah's death record. Hi Trish The list as usual is so helpful with ideas which I was hoping for, and no I never thought of Shipping Gazettes. I have seen the deaths for the John Lynch's in Victoria for this time period as there is a family of Lynch's who I believe to be related but there again I can't prove it. I've also had a search of the deaths in NSW for all the John Lynch's during the time frame. I had thought perhaps he and his wife split up but she is shown as a widow on her 2nd marriage record. John's father's name was Patrick Lynch, no mother's name know. John was born in Kilrush, Co Clare in June 1827 by his army record in the 2nd European Light Infantry in Madras. His marriage record in India to Paulina only showed his father's name and I've searched for years trying to find a mother's name but LYNCH in Co Clare is like Smith :-} I certainly have a puzzle with John & his parents and siblings which I've also searched in Cty Clare for years. Thanks again for your help and thanks for the sites. Hi Jenelle Many thanks, yes I do have Deborah's death record. She only had 1 child, a boy Edgar Julius Sylvester Lynch my grandfather. I also have the records of her sister Paulina & her marriage & child..she married a seaman/cook from the USA and eventually settled in the USA. I also have Paulina's death record i.e. the mother of Deborah & Paulina. Paulina Snr remarried a George Ettienne Loyau in 1865 and had more children. The info I am missing is just the arrival in Australia from India of John, Paulina & Deborah Jane Lynch about 1854 and the death of John Lynch. Amazing to think I've been able to find so much about the family but not their arrival or John's death. Hi List, Posting this in the hope it may offer some background information in your family research. I have nothing to do with this event, the information was passed on to me by a friend who thought I might be interested - and, yes, I am; what a shame its only on for one week, as there is far too much to see in the time. If you find something that interests you, and you want more information, hold the mouse over the event to highlight it and then click to get the full details. Co-ordinated by the History Council of NSW, History Week 2009 is from 5th to 13th September, and includes walks, talks, exhibitions and films. The theme this year is "Scandals, Crime and Corruption" and covers bushranging, rum-smuggling, cattle rustling, robbery, arson, murder and many intriguing misdemeanours from our early years. There are over 200 venues around the State, and you might find something of interest that relates to your family history on the website - http://www.historycouncilnsw.org.au/events/events?search_id=all Macquarie University is holding a full day of free lectures on 9th September, but bookings are required - http://www.sl.nsw.gov.au/events/events_talks/events/History_Council_Symposium.html Cheers Trish Nowra NSW

Hi Joan, Have you searched through the Shipping Gazettes? They only go up to 1855, but should cover the period of the LYNCH arrivals. No shortcuts, you will have to click onto each one and search for shipping arrivals - http://www.nla.gov.au/ferg/issn/14403897.html There are seven hits in Victoria for death of John LYNCH between 1859 and 1865. You might be able to narrow the search if you can provide any further details such as parents' names - https://online.justice.vic.gov.au/bdm/index-search?action=getHistIdxSearchCriteria Do you know his parents' names? Hello Listers For many years I've been searching for the arrival from India to Australia of my gg grandparents John & Paulina Lynch and their daughter Deborah Jane b 1852 in Madras, India. I've searched assisted immigration into NSW & VIC, unassisted into NSW & VIC on-line and have been through many rolls at the State Records NSW over the years for a quite a few years after 1853, just in case their daughter's death record was incorrect in that she was supposed to have been aged 2 when she arrived. John had "purchased" himself out of the HEIC army in Madras early 1852 so must have had some money to be able to do this as I believe it cost about 20 pounds. He was shown as a plasterer on Deborah's baptism record in November 1852. Also John died between 1859 when his 2nd daughter Paulina was born at Ultimo and 1865 when his widowed wife remarried. I have not been able to find any death record despite purchasing a group search of the LYNCH's during this time period from the Registry of BDM's. I feel they must have paid their own passage and the possibility is that they were only shown as "so many cabin & so many steerage" without any names mentioned hence the reason I've not been able to find them. Has anyone any further ideas on where I may search for their arrival? Thank you Joan -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter. We are a community of 6 million users fighting spam.
