    1. [AUS-NSW] James Jesse Stroud - Australasian Musician, composer, songwriter and short story writer.
    2. Ainslie Pyne
    3. Hi folks, My late grandfather James Jesse Stroud, born 1879, lived in NZ until his late teens and then went off to England to try and find his birth family details. While in England he joined the British India Army and became a leader of one of the viceroy's bands. He married in1906 and brought his English wife, Sarah, back to Invercargill, NZ. He continued with his composing, performing and conducting as well as writing short stories and poetry. I'm researching his story and trying to fill gaps in the family stories. We have a newspaper obituary which stated he had joined the British Songwriters Society - but efforts to find the society has been fruitless. I have since found a site with the following information Creator: Stroud, James J. (James Jesse) Contributor: Gordon, L. Stroud, James J. (James Jesse) Title: Whitsuntide [music] : sacred song / words by L. Gordon ; music by James J. Stroud. Date: 1930 - 1939 Published: Paterson [N.S.W.] : The Australian Publishing Service, [193-?] Subjects: Sacred songs with piano. Vocal music, Australian -- 1931-1960. Material Type: Music Physical Description: 1 score ([3] p.) Notes: Also available in an electronic version via the Internet at: http://nla.gov.au/nla.mus-vn2922725 Amicus Number: 10558369 To cite this item use: http://nla.gov.au/nla.mus-vn2922725 I have googled The Australian Publishing Service to no avail The has pictures of the album fronts and scans of the pages for each piece but no more. My grandfather wrote short stories for The Bulletin after his return to NZ - I recall as a young child, his accounts of antics he and fellow officers got up to in India - and then many years later when he was called up by the British Army to serve in France and Belgium in WW1 more tales of his exploits. I am now trying to find this Australian Publishing Service as I am hoping to find copies of his writings and composing to add to the collection of info I currently have on hand. Any information would be much appreciated. Thanks for your time, Ainslie Pyne (nee Brown)

    1. [AUS-NSW] Funeral Director's Records
    2. Cynthia and Ted Glover
    3. If someone from the NSW Genealogy Society/Family History Group, is watching this list they might like to know that the owner of Walters Funeral Directors, Sydney, told me she is on the verge of throwing out 100yrs of records because they are taking up too much space. These are the records of the 9 branches of the business which have been in the family since her grandfather's day. Please don't let this happen. She told me that most firms in Sydney have been taken over by big American companies and they just send the records to the dump. Criminal. In NZ we find the undertaker's records wonderful for genealogy as they contain the same info as death certificate. They are only too happy to share them with genealogists. A huge saving. I hope a group of Sydney genealogists will get together, take these records off their hands and make it their project to transcribe them for history's sake. Cynthia (NZ)

    1. [AUS-NSW] Inverell General Cemetery - lookup
    2. Cynthia and Ted Glover
    3. Would some kind person be able to look at Inverell cemetery records for me, please. My great uncle, Bertram Dawson Vere FOSTER, died 1963, according to the BDMs for NSW. (He was known as "Vere.") I need an actual date of death to be able to look for his Death Notice. Would like to know if he had children, their names, and to know if he was still with his wife, Clarice FOSTER. Perhaps someone could help me with that also. Sincere thanks, Cynthia (NZ)

    3. Hi Again Trish I have had a family history from a contact in USA Her tree shows that the Ellen McCawley that married William James Sanderson in 1912 was daughter of Robert and Margaret nee McKinlay The Groom is correct as is the date but the place is Quandary This Ellen lived until 1992 so obviously did not die in 1922 in Byron Bay. Her last 2 children were born after 1922!! I think I will just muddle along with this one Thanks again Steve ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to AUS-NSW-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    1. [AUS-NSW] STERNBECK
    2. David & Sandra Bales
    3. Listers, I was looking for something in a Sydney Morning Herald from 1945 and saw the following news item. There are many Sternbeck researchers out there who might find some interest in the article. I have no connection with the family. 103rd BIRTHDAY Mrs.W.T. Sternbeck, who was 103 yesterday, is now living in a house in St Albans which she saw built when she was a schoolgirl. Mrs Sternbeck who was married in 1867 had 12 children of whom four sons and four daughters are still living. She has 69 grandchildren, 82 great grandchildren and 21 great great grandchildren. Her husband died in 1911." NB I was a poor researcher and didnt write the date on the very poor photocopy I have but it likely to be either the 15th or 16th January 1945. The poor copy also means the numbers of descendants are very difficuly to read. David
