Listers , My wife's ancestor, Mary Ann OXLEY had a son Albert who was born at Richmond on May 4, 1850. Mary married Alfred BAKER in 1853 and that first born was raised as Albert BAKER. The birth certificate for Albert gave the father's name as William CORNWELL and despite knowing of this since our earliest research in about 1980 we have never been sure as to who William CORNWELL was. A researcher this week has told us that William was the son of Abraham CORNWELL and Susannah EATON and that William (1827 - 1906) married Mary HOUGH (1820 - 1904) at St Peters Richmond in August 1850. A first child of this marriage was born in September 1850. It must have been very premature. I have spent the last few days trying to get my head around the various families listed in the header and trying to work out who fits where when the intermarriage seems so common. There are several trees on Ancestry each of which covers part of the family. Can any lister point us to some source which tells a more complete story of one or more of the families involved. I would love to read some notes or book that will help me see how the families intertwine. It is all too much trying to learn in an afternoon at the computer. I was told tonight that Windsor library has some excellent resources for these people. We hope to check those when we stay in Sydney early in 2010. Any other suggestions are welcomed. William and Mary appear to have died in the Bathurst area. Does anyone know more about this particular branch. I'd love to have known this two weeks back when we were in Bathurst. For those on the list in or near Sydney, may I mention some activities which may be of interest to local historians: Dictionary of Sydney - Workshops and Talks 9 December 2009 – 16 December 2009 The Dictionary of Sydney combines text, mulltimedia and mapping and has been developed by the City of Sydney and the University of Sydney with the involvement of many of Sydney's leading cultural institutions and over 200 contributors (so far). It will present the story of all of metropolitan Sydney through a website and, over time, other digital products. It will become a forum for education and entertainment as well as an interactive collection point for local histories. Be one of the first to explore this unique and exciting resource in a workshop presented by the Dictionary team or hear more when the team discusses the ins and outs of the Dictionary. Carolyn We have been doing look ups for a long time . Cant handle all newspapers . Are a great many volunteers who make this all work. I am just one of these All you have to do is read the web site Bye MargM Ryerson Volunteer SMH 1976 & Central Coast Express > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > AUS-NSW-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' > without the quotes in the subject and the body of the > message
Carolyn, You either request a look up using the directions in Ryerson of use the resources of your local library if you are fortunate to have the relevant paper on microfilm at your local library. Failing that, most of the papers indexed especially the NSW ones are available for viewing at the State Library in Sydney. Happy hunting from someone who loves Ryerson and is indebted to all the volunteers who do such a wonderful job. Other listers who have used Ryerson might also look at the section in Ryerson where it tells how donations to such a worthy cause may be made to fund future efforts. Hi List How does one actually get to see the entry that went into the paper that the RYERSON INDEX so kindly reports? If you find a likely entry, how do you 'view' what was actually in the paper? I am sure that a few years back, you could, but I may be wrong. Carolyn

Hi Carolyn, I've checked a number of Sydney cemeteries - Blue Mtns, Eastern Suburbs, Frenchs Forest, Macquarie Park, Manly and Rookwood - without success. The only possibility I've come across, buried at Point Clare, is for Edna May Graham, died 21 April 1979 aged 71 years. The age doesn't quite add up, and she obviously died prior to 1984, so not sure if she's the one. Perhaps she and Arthur were cremated? http://austcemindex.com/inscription.php?id=5159643 If you can't find her spouse, perhaps they moved interestate. I also checked Brisbane in case they retired north, and there is an Edna May Graham buried at Hemmant Cemetery, buried 4/8/1982 aged 70 years. She's buried alongside William Renwick Graham aged 95 years, so probably not yours. Do you know where they were living when last heard of, to narrow the search? Cheers Trish Nowra NSW > I have had a request from a very good friend of mine to find the death > of her Aunty. She apparently was still alive in 1984. Hi List I have had a request from a very good friend of mine to find the death of her Aunty. She apparently was still alive in 1984. I have checked the RYERSON Index to no avail and was wondering if someone had any other ideas. Maybe the Electoral Roll might indicate where she was living then. Not sure where to go from here. Her details are below. Edna May LOWGER born 1916. Daughter of George Ernest LOWGER and Bessie SYMONS. Edna married Arthur Richard GRAHAM in 1936. I cannot find his death either. Nor was he listed in the RYERSON Index. I also checked the Nominal Roll and he doesn't appear to be their either. Would there be any Cemetery Listings post 1984 to check? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Carolyn
Hi All, I was wondering if someone would share their experiences with me regarding obtaining UK court documentation for persons convicted for a crime and transported to Australia both for a fixed term and for life. I have the following relatives: * Jeremiah Shoobridge was sentenced on 13 March 1837 to a life sentence to NSW for sheep stealing. He departed UK on 20 July 1837 arrived via "Asia" at Sydney on 3 Dec 1837. He died in Parramatta in 1888. * Henry William Dunn was sentenced in 1827 to 7 years to NSW for stealing from his master. He departed London on 24 May 1827 arrived via "Champion" at Sydney on 17 Oct 1827. He died in Picton in 1877. * William Reeves was sentenced on 16 Oct 1832 to a life sentence to NSW for horse stealing in Buckinghamshire. He departed London on 14 December 1832 arrived via "Mangles" at Sydney on 19 April 1833.He died in Gundagai in 1859. Thanks for any assistance, Peter, Melbourne, Australia
