Happy New Year to you all. Would there be sks out there with the NSW BDM index on CD willing to look up any children born to Frederick FOOTE and Florence Alice SMITH who were married in 1906 in Narrabri, please? Both parents died whilst the children were still young. Many thanks for this info. I'm sure my grandmother would have been quite happy to be in a League of ladies as well, but being a staunch Presbyterian with at least one brother a mason, the Loyal Orange Lodge may just be the answer! :) Thanks again, Cheers Sue Hi Sue and list Anything with LO in it sounds like "Loyal Orange". Loyal Orange Lodge (LOL) was/is a unit of the Loyal Orange Institution of NSW. Usually associated with Methodism and Free Masonry. Nowadays a more benign registered charity running nursing homes. Usually written with the lodge number after the abbreviation LOL. For example: New Lambton LOL 279, Adamstown LOL 28, Wallsend LOL 258. Regards

A happy New year to all! I am taking advantage of a lazy New years day and working on my grandmothers biography. Does anyone know what L.O.L may have stood for in 1920? >From the newspaper article it sounds like it may have been some kind of Womens league. Cheers Sue
Thank you everyone for your suggestions on how to find what became of the elusive Roy Lomas. Yes, I will be getting the pertinent certificates, but NSW certificates are so painfully slow to arrive, I was hoping to be able to find more information while waiting. Thanks Jenelle, I have now tried your suggestions without any luck. I didn't know that the Archways site existed, so that was an extra bonus! Graeme, the Bullpitt family were originally from Hampshire in the UK, and as you say, it's not a common name. William Henry Bullpitt (one of 12 children) migrated to Australia about 1870, married my great aunt Phoebe Jessie Coleman and produced 12 little Bullpitts, but as far as I know, they generally remained around the Bundaberg/Brisbane areas. Kerry, while I'd already found Cecile's death, I hadn't found the marriage, so am exploring that path to try to find a connection between the two Lomas families. Patricia Norma didn't appear on the electoral rolls until 1949, so presumably would only have been aged less than 26. I've only found one documented birth to Cecile and Leonard (Ida who was born and died in 1906). Given that Cecile married in 1906 at 21yo, she would have still only been about 38 when Patricia was born, assuming my guess re Patricia's age is correct. Leonard Lomas died in 1924, which would still fit in with my estimates of Patricia's age. Hi Trish and fellow listers, Thanks to your efforts, I have found that Millicent travelled from Manila, Phillipines to San Francisco on the USNA "Fred C Ainsworth" on the 14th December 1951. She was travelling under the name of BARTLETT. I have now got Minor Earl BARTLETT's death certificate from Texas, USA on which it states his spouse is Millicent BARTLETT. I, also have Minor's enlistment details. He was in the USA Army Air Corps. I would hazard a guess that Millicent joined Minor at the Clark Air Force Base in the Phillipines prior to her travelling with other war brides to USA. Does any one know where the Australian War Brides would have married? Is there any data bases that have recorded War Birdes going to USA? Hi Lyn, There is a death in NSW for Cecile LOMAS 1970/2796 Father: Thomas Francis, Mother Josephine District: Sydney Marriage for a Cecile FARRELL to Leonard LOMAS 1906/5957 District: Sydney I know this would then make her about 60 + in 1949 and Patricia in her 30's 40's when she got married? hope this helps in some way regards Kerry
Hi Trev You are a treasure. I will follow up this information - I had not thought about IGI site. If she was a war bride or was to be a war bride it would explain why she disappeared from Australia. Many thanks & hope you have a great & safe New Year. Hi Glynis, A google search for the name "Minor Earl BARTLETT" threw up this link in America for the obituary of a lady named Johnnie BERNHARD who grew up in San Antonio; the obituary mentions her father Minor Earl BARTLETT and her brother Minor Earl BARTLETT, jnr. It made me think that perhaps Millicent may have been an American War Bride, and moved to the USA post-1944, so I tried to search a bit further. http://www.harpertalasek.com/services.asp?locid=33&page=odetail&id=11311 The IGI threw up the following information when I searched for "Millicent Clare BARTLETT" - Name: Millicent BARTLETT Birth Date: 25 July 1908 Death Date: 6 May 2002 Social Security Number: 458-44-8787 State or Territory where number was issued: Texas Death residence localities: ZIP Code: 78228; Localities: San Antonio, Bexar, Texas There is a possible match for Minor BARTLETT - Name: Minor BARTLETT Birth Date: 17 September 1915 Social Security Number: 456-01-4012 State or Territory where number was issued: Texas The 1881 Census for USA has Minor E BARTLETT aged 8 years, son of Milton and Mary BARTLETT in Vigo, Knox, Indiana - this may be Minor's father and grandparents? Dear Folks, Hope you all have a safe and Happy New Year for 2010. I am interested in finding the marriage of Millicent Clare FOOTE and Minor Earl BARTLETT. Milicent was the daughter of Clarence Henry FOOTE and Ruby Stella WHITE. She was born in Gunnedah on the 25th July 1908. She became a teacher and taught in Newcastle, Duddley (she was living at the Oceanview Hotel whilst there) and in Sydney. In 1943 Millicent was teaching at sydney Church of England Girls Grammar School (SCEGGS) at Darlinghurst. She was living at 108 Clapton Place, Darlinghurst. The family story has Millicent marrying a gentleman by the name of Minor Earl BARTLETT. I have checked the Electoral Rolls for 1949 and 1953-54 without success. Does anyone out there know of this couple? Does anyone have any suggestions of where I can look? I have checked the NSW BDM Index for the marriage or death of the couple. There is no listing in the Ryerson Index for their death. Hi Listers, I wonder if anyone can help me find what became of a longlost cousin, details as follows: Roy Morton LOMAS b1909 Bundaberg, Qld Parents: Bernice Amy BULLPITT (b1890 Bundaberg, d1972 Melbourne) and John Maunder Morton Gladstone LOMAS (b1885 Bundaberg, d1973 Sydney). Bernice and John's marriage broke up some time during the 1920s. In 1919 they are still living together in South Brisbane. The following information I have pieced together from the electoral rolls on ancestry. Bernice appears in 1924 in Melbourne (alone), the next sighting being still in Melbourne in 1931 with her cousin Theodore George Lovell who she married in 1942. John appears in 1930 with new wife Florence Gertrude (unknown), living in Randwick NSW. I've not found any marriage for them in either NSW or QLD. In 1933, Roy and his wife Ethel May ALEXANDER (m1932 Marrickville NSW) moves in with his father, and Roy and Ethel and John and Florence live together intermittently in Randwick until at least 1943. In 1949, Roy is living with Cecile and Patricia Norma LOMAS in Paddington NSW but is nowhere to be found in 1954. I can find no LOMAS family connection between Roy and Cecile and Patricia. I suspect Patricia was Cecile's daughter (she married Mervyn PAYNTER in 1949 but can find no record of Cecile marrying despite going back to 1920. In 1949-1954, Roy's wife Ethel is still living in Randwick next to John and Florence. She died in 1961, Sydney. Florence died Randwick 1969, John in Sydney 1973. I can't find any trace of Roy in QLD, NSW or VIC electoral rolls or BMDs, or on the NAA site. I would imagine he would have died more than 10 years ago, so have also searched online at Rookwood and Eastern Suburbs Cemeteries. I would love to know what became of him, and whether Cecile was related to him or whether the shared (but uncommon) surname was purely coincidental. Can anyone offer any suggestions or illumination? Thanks, Lyn Y Melbourne
