    3. Hello, Thank you for explaining this. I can mention that the "Orange Lodge" has been discussed on one or 2 of the Lists for Canada (Maritime Provinces). That's where I had heard about it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orange_Institution Betty ----- Original Message ----- From: "paynescrossing" <paynescrossing@gmail.com> To: <aus-nsw@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, January 02, 2010 11:21 AM Subject: Re: [AUS-NSW] an early acronym L.O.L. 3. Hi Betty and list Australia became a federation in on 1 Jan 1901 when the six former colonies became federal states of the Commonwealth. Unlike the US 19th amendment, no constitutional amendment was required to give women the vote in Australia. The all-male conferences which debated the question of federation and the drafting of the Australian Constitution did debate whether women should have the vote: the Constitution was left silent on the question but provided that if you had a right to vote in a State election, then you had a right to vote at a Federal election which meant that South Australian and Western Australian women had a federal right to vote. In 1902, the Commonwealth Parliament legislated to extend the right to most women in the other States (aboriginal women had to wait some time to get the franchise or have it restored) and exercised that right for the first time in the elections held in December 1903. Electoral rolls from 1903 are a really valuable source of family history information. There's a useful timeline of milestones "Electoral Milestones for Women" at: http://www.aec.gov.au/elections/australian_electoral_history/milestone.htm The Commonwealth Parliament has good list of links "Women in Politics" at: http://www.aph.gov.au/library/intguide/pol/polwomen.htm One of those links takes you to "A Matter of Public Importance: Votes for Women" http://www.aph.gov.au/library/intguide/POL/women/Women.htm There were Leagues of Women Voters in the various states later federated and renamed as the Australian Federation of Women Voters. See: http://trove.nla.gov.au/people/514004?c=people None of these used the acronym LOL. I still think that the most likely reference is to Loyal Orange Lodge. 3. Colleen I do not have Family Tree Maker. On my old Generations program I can mark each person that I want in my new "tree", then I can EXPORT the marked persons as a GEDCOM file. To create the new tree I create a new tree from the menu then I IMPORT the GEDCOM that I created as above. This will populate my new tree with the marked persons. Hope this helps you. 3. Hello, I'm just coming across this question, and I was reminded "last year" (last month) that in the US it was the 1920's that women got the "right to vote." And, I found out that they got the right to vote in different years in different countries. I wonder if LOL had something to do with what we have in the US - the "League of Women Voters." I just looked on-line, and, if I'm reading correctly at 5 am (my time), it looks like women got the right to vote in 1902. That's much earlier than the US, and I think English women got the right to vote much later than that, and French women much later. (Saying this from memory from a few weeks ago.) http://labour-movements.suite101.com/article.cfm/australias_unionism_in_the_1900s Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) (In the USA, it took "female activists" 75-100 years to "finally" get the "right to vote.") (I don't know how long it took in other countries. But, I just looked at this site, and it says New Zealand and Australia were the first countries (then Colonies?) to give women the right to vote.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women's_suffrage http://www.historyplace.com/speeches/anthony.htm ----- Original Message ----- From: "betty" <bkrhodes@bigpond.net.au> To: <aus-nsw@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, January 01, 2010 7:04 AM Subject: Re: [AUS-NSW] an early acronym L.O.L. > ----- Original Message ----- > From: <suee@exemail.com.au> > To: <aus-nsw@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Friday, January 01, 2010 5:09 PM > Subject: [AUS-NSW] an early acronym L.O.L. > >> >> Does anyone know what L.O.L may have stood for in 1920? >>>From the newspaper article it sounds like it may have been some kind of >> Womens league.
