I tried the Royal Military School of Music records but apparently he arrived in the England with sufficient musical education to allow his entry to the Military Band membership by audition (normally a musician needed to spend four years studying at Kneller Hall in Twickenham before graduating into one of the bands) A researcher at the College checked the records but could find no trace of him and said that he probably gained entry via an audition (as he himself had done) I have my grandfather's marriage certificate dated 1906 in Simla, Bombay and know that he returned to NZ in 1907 b ut was still on the list in case the British Army needed to recall him for any other posting - this didn't happen until WW1 when he went off to Gallipoli and Europe. 3. Hi Margaret, In answer to your question about surviving FOOTE children. According to the records in the family bible Frederick and Florence FOOTE had six children. 1/ Florence Daphne FOOTE b.abt 1907 d. 15/4/1915 2/ Phylis M FOOTE b. 1912 d.21/02/1917 (this is a big question mark about this child as no records have been found for her) 3/ Thelma Clare FOOTE, b1915 d.21/2/1917 4/ Olga Irene FOOTE, b. 1917 d.1972 in Tumut, NSW -m- (1) Ronald George BOLAND 1938 in Burwood & (2) Noel Leonard FULLER 1955 in Burwood. 5/ Dorothy FOOTE, b. abt 1921 (Have not found a marriage or death record for her) 6/ Frederick Keith FOOTE, b. November 1921 d.18/01/1922 So by that record only 2 daughters survived to adulthood. I am going to send away for the transcription of the death certifiactes to see if there was any health problems that the children had in common. 3. Hi Chris, A lot of the Police Gazettes have been digitised by Archive CD Books (now under the umbrella of Gould). Some have been submitted to World Vital Records: http://www.worldvitalrecords.com although this is a subscription service and there doesn't seem to be a "pay per view" service. The entry for Henry Lowry BRADSHAW is actually an extract from Victorian Police Gazettes and this year of Victorian Gazettes has not been digitised. Entry from NSW reads: EXTRACT FROM THE VICTORIA POLICE GAZETTE.. [From Police Gazette, 4th April, 1883.] FELONIES AND OFFENCES NOT OTHERWISE DESCRIBED. Henry Lowry Bradshaw, is charged on warrant with forgery and uttering on Rennick Kemsley, and Co., 55, Little Collins street West, Melbourne, on the 19th ultimo. Description:- Native of Victoria, 20 or 21 years of age but looks 23, about 5 feet 11 inches high, slender build and very erect, dark hair, dark-brown eyes, small features, upper lip curled up, a very slight streak of dark whiskers and slight down on lip only ; usually wears dark clothing (frock coat), and hard felt hat.. Left for Sydney on the 20th ultimo.-O 2130. 3rd April, 1883. (NSW Police Gazette 11 April 1883 pg 152). 1. Re: [AUS-NSW] Shipping news in SMH

    3. Hi I'm not sure but I have a feeling it means Customs Clearance - ie the ship checked out to make sure no one is 'smuggling' in goods which might otherwise be charged Customs Tax to bring into a country. Also could mean the ship's crew and passengers were checked to see they weren't carrying any diseases/illnesses that the authorities don't want to be let loose on the general populace. I grew up in Nelson NZ - we lived in a house on the hills face looking out across Tasman Bay where we'd see the overseas ships anchored waiting for the pilot to clear the ship and then they'd come in on the high tide through to the harbour. I remember my Dad telling me this applied to all the merchant ships that came in to port - the pilot launch would go out with the police/medical officer to meet the ship before it entered port and then once the ship's log was checked, the captain and the ship's doctor gave their reports then the ship was clear to enter the port. No doubt the ship's cargo manifest was checked to see no illegal products were being brought into the country. Cheers Ainslie.
