Just a thought, have you looked at the Orange newspapers of the day? May even have made the Sydney papers. People were sometimes put in mental hospitals for depression, not necessarily bad cases of it either. ` Cheers Annette in Cowra NSW

Hello If anyone has CD's for the Police Gazettes for 1861 to 1863, could I please ask for a look up to see if a John LYNCH may be listed with a mention of gaol sentences in Darlinghurst or Parramatta Gaol, please. I have records of him in both gaols from 1855-1858 and possibly in 1863, but not sure if the one in 1863 is the same John LYNCH. I can find no record of his death and as his wife remarried in December 1865 in Sydney, and is shown as a widow, I am trying to find some evidence that he did die between 1859 when his 2nd daughter was born and his wife's remarriage in 1865. The 1948 death is his adopted son and he fell off a train carriage, so unfortunately not the case. Stanley died 1943 with no children of his own, occupation was a miner... depression, alcohol abuse, or an act of passion are all options. You have to think he was pretty committed to being sad though, he did make the rope from torn sheets from his own bed. Thanks again to all who have responded Cheers Ruth -----Original Message----- From: aus-nsw-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-nsw-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Barbara OConnor Sent: Thursday, 18 February 2010 10:39 AM To: aus-nsw@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [AUS-NSW] Orange Mental hospital In the 1940 D&A issues weren't generally a cause for committal, unless long term heavy alcohol abuse had caused permanent brain damage. As a general rule there is a 120 year embargo on NSW Health Dept records. State Records web site will give you details on how you might be able access . You need to get permission from the Health Dept Be easier to check with State Records if an inquest file has survived and get copy of that if it has . Try Marias copy service if you cant get to Kingswood mariaskwi@hotmail.com A transcription of his death cert could also give you info On the off chance I just checked the NSW Probate indexes and he left a will .......d 10 Dec 1945 Broken hill ref # 293891 . So should be a Probate Packet and Deceased Estate file out at Kingswood too He lived at 140 Cornish St Broken hill, a miner bye MargM Beautiful Wyong Shire NSW
Thank you Barbara, Grahame and Ainslie for your responses. Stanley ended up being buried at Broken Hill so I wonder if a transfer from there before or after an arrest occurred.. Silly, before accidently finding this article I hadn't considered his death certificate would be an option and of course there would have been an inquest.... I hadn't considered either that a person may have been sent to a Mental hospital for other reasons other than just a mental illness, there could have been drug and alcohol issues involved. There is much more for me to look into.. I am very grateful for the input. Re Coronial Inquests records at State Archives . My experience is that you will find the verdict but not the details that would be of interest. Comes under GAWS Area (Greater Western Area Health Service), phone (02) 6360 7700. They may be able to tell you where files are archived, if they still exist, and if you can access them. Various possibilities - Stanley may have been committed as a result of a court case and placed in police custody until Bloomfield staff picked him up; or he had been transferred from somewhere else to Orange by police, in which case one imagines that he would have been delivered to police station. There would also have been an inquest. I suggest you get a transcription of his death cert. With the date, where inquest was held, etc., you might then look of the inquest record. See NSW State Records for info on Inquests. Hello all Listers, I'm wondering if anyone has any information regarding the Mental Hospital at Orange in the 1940's. I have found in the Sydney Morning Herald that a family member was committed to the mental hospital and then the next day found dead hanging from a bar in a padded police cell. Are there any available records to see why Stanley Kitto was admitted to the mental hospital? Why would someone be committed then left in a police cell? Hoping for some help Regards Ruth caughey
I can't help myself, I hate unresolved things that should have an answer...so I went looking for your John WILSON to see if I could find anything. I once lived in the Gilgandra area so I guess my curiosity was aroused! I have looked in the following: Sands Pastoral Directories for 1903 - 1905 - 1909 Sands Country Alphabetical 1903 - 1909 - 1914 1903 Country Electoral Roll in which I looked at all the WILSON names in case his first name was not John, in all the surrounding polling areas with no luck at all. Are you sure that the John WILSON, in the newspaper article is your man? I looked at the article and it is definitely the way we would write it...Person's Name...Property Name....Town. So I think whoever said it was a property, is correct. Another thought was - a) he could have been a manager, or workman on the property. b) it could have been the name of a house in the town. I am going into the Family History today and will run his name through the full 1903 Electoral Roll. Cheers Annette in Cowra NSW

Some of those pages are so hard to read, even when they are blown up. Helen .. Are you checking on variations of the name? One of my branches from Ireland is Holloway, but also spelt as Halloway, Alloway, etc. In the days of all too common illiteracy, names were written as the listener heard it - add the complexities of different accents of both speaker and listener, and you could end up with anything. Unfortunately I can only go back as far as my g-g-grandfather who relocated from Ireland to Sheffield, from where all but one of his adult children promptly emmigrated to Australia. So can't give any help on your Alloways. Cheers Barbara
