Hi to all Can some one tell me please how to work the new Qld Historical Index for Birth Deaths & Marriages? It has been change you could search it just by years but now you have to put the day, month and year in to search. That's no good if you do not know the day or month. Jo Qld

Hi Jo & Marg It's more work to search for a record, because as Marg says you have to put in a range of full dates. Though you don't have to enter leading zeros. But, the fact that you have to enter a full date means that the database is now indexed on the actual date of the event. As such, it means you can discover the date without having to purchase the certificate. Here's an example, using a search for Arthur Albert SHAMBLER whose registration number is 1890/5679. Once you know the year, search using just that year. 1/1/1890 to 31/12/1890. The record is found (though be aware that events towards the end of a year may have been registered in the following year, in which case this search will say 'not found'. Simply try 1/1/1889 to 31/12/1889 for example). Then try a 6-month period. In this example a search on 1/1/1890 to 30/6/1890 found the record again. Then try a 3-month period. 1/1/1890 to 31/3/1890 failed, and hence the event occurred between 1/4/1890 and 30/6/1890. Once you have the quarter, find the month. 1/4/1890 to 30/6/1890 worked, as did 1/5/1890 to 30/6/1890. But 1/6/1890 to 30/6/1890 failed, so the event took place in the previous month. Next, try a fortnight. I entered 1/5/1890 to 15/5/1890 and the event was found. Next, a week. I entered 1/5/1890 to 7/5/1890 and again the week was found. How you proceed from here is up to you but I usually work day to day within a week. The event was found in the period 6/5/180 to 7/5/1890, but failed on 7/5/1890 to 7/5/1890. Hence Arthur was born on 6 May 1890. So, although you have to do extra work, the new system does have offer you something in return. Just wish NSW would change their database too :-) Just a point. When narrowing down your range of dates, only change one or other of the Search from and Search to dates at a time. Good luck. Dear Listeres, Sorry if you feel this is off topic but here goes. At the end of the month we are going to Sydney and have booked a tour of the Middle Head Fortifications. We have to meet on the corner of Chowder Bay Road and Middle Head Road. As we will be relying on public transport can any one have any ideas on how to get there. My husbands G.Grandfather was in the military there and his Grandfather was born there. Thanks in advance, Regards Elaine
I am looking for a family named QUINN who lived in New Farm, Brisbane 1969-70. Father was John and mother was Imelda and three daughters. Oldest Pam, next Jacqueline (hairdresser) and youngest Roslyn, moved to NSW about 1978-9. Any contact with any in the family would be appreciated. Greg
Thank you Margaret for your help. I am surprised Henry John LEWIN is not included - he died in 1872 and is buried at Sandgate. I know his wife Elizabeth, was buried elsewhere, but was hoping for something on Henry's line. Your help is appreciated. Hi Rosalyn, Further to Barbara's email, if you find a death indexed on the Ryerson site, you can contact Ryerson direct to request a lookup of the notice - go to their homepage, and Requesting-A-Lookup is on the left-hand side, click onto it and you get a form to fill in with the relevant details. Cheers Trish Nowra NSW > Now you have the publication dates, you need to access the newspapers. > Check with your local library to see if they hold copies of the SMH. Now you have the publication dates, you need to access the newspapers. Check with your local library to see if they hold copies of the SMH. My country town library has them, so there's a good chance your library will as well. You may need to "book" them in advance. They tend to to bound in large, heavy volumes. If they don't keep them, they will be able to tell you your nearest point of access. Also, http://www.ausbdm.org/lookup.php?st=NSW has contact information for headstone transcriptions. Cheers Barbara
Hi Barbara, Thank you for the Catholic Cemeteries link. I have found a great uncle and family who death had baffled all the genealogists in the family. Once I had the burials I was able to go to the Ryerson Index and find the references to their death notices. However now I am stuck! Can you please tell me where I can find the information in the notices? This is the info I have: Ryerson Index *** TANNER Francis Joseph Death notice 09MAR1983 Death 90 late of Westmead Sydney Morning Herald 11MAR1983 *** TANNER Elizabeth Alice Death notice 29APR1957 Death late of Westmead Sydney Morning Herald 30APR1957 *** TANNER Anthony Joseph Death notice 29MAR1995 Death late of Westmead Sydney Morning Herald 04APR1995 *** TANNER Francis John Death notice 19MAR1978 Death late of Mannering Park, formerly of Toongabbie Sydney Morning Herald 21MAR1978 Hoping you can help, Rosalyn You can look up on line yourself, but there are three different cemetries - Catholic, Anglican & Independent. http://www.catholiccemeteries.org.au/ http://www.rookwoodindependent.com.au/deceased.aspx http://rookwoodcemetery.com.au/search-online.html ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to AUS-NSW-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
Hi Gloria: 1850's Mudgee? Looking for gold? Over at http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,440048.0.html someone else is looking for an Oliver family connection to Nash's Flat. There are some useful suggestions there. The PILLIGA list might be a better place to ask or search: http://newsarch.rootsweb.com/th/index/AUS-NSW-PILLIGA For example see: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/aus-nsw-pilliga/2005-02/1109285063 Regards On 26 February 2010 15:48, Gloria Hargreave <smith-thompson@bigpond.com> wrote: > Can anyone tell me anything about Nash's Flat near Mudgee? > The Law and Oliver families also. > I have always wondered why this family went to Mudgee when Thomas' father lived at Musselbrook, and later Maitland.
Can anyone tell me anything about Nash's Flat near Mudgee? The Law and Oliver families also. A forebear Thomas Hampton, his wife Mary nee Law, and their three girls Mary , Martha and Ann, as well as Mary Hampton's parents, Moses and Celia Law settled there about 1855/6 after arriving in Australia on the 'Hilton' in 1855 with other Hampton siblings. I have always wondered why this family went to Mudgee when Thomas' father lived at Musselbrook, and later Maitland. Thomas died sometime soon after arrival as Mary married again in 1858, at Mudgee. We can find no death record for Thomas. Celia Law nee Oliver , may have been related to William Oliver, who was settled in Mudgee, we believe. She did have a brother William, born in 1795 at Bethersden Kent...she was born in the same village in 1804. I would be really grateful for any information about the Oliver land and family, and Nash's Flat. Gloria
Apparently there is a SAG Rookwood CD I've had some help from it off a list before.... -----Original Message----- From: aus-nsw-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-nsw-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Barbara OConnor Sent: Thursday, 25 February 2010 10:30 AM To: aus-nsw@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [AUS-NSW] Rookwood cemetery look up Its Anglican Section 6, Grave No. 1687 - the 'detailed information' from the search results give you a rough idea of where it is. Thank you Barbara, I should have been more clear, Is there anyone who can help with a transcription of the headstone......? The information on the online search was helpful but I would love to know if there is a headstone and what it might say. Maud Evelyn McDonald 16/07/1921 Cheers Ruth
