    1. [AUS-NSW] Needing help pleae of families
    2. Elaine Jefferson
    3. Hi to all I am hoping this is the corectl list for Sydney and districts. I hoping some one may know of the following family that began in hobart then travelled up the coast to Sydeny and the man has since died in the last 10 years or so, The family I am alluding to is GIBBONS The mother was born an Essie ADCOCK married Henry GIBBONS Hobert and seemed to have one son Maurice Henry Gibbons Have tracked him via the Ancestry on line Electoral Rolls till 1954 then it stops till the next batch is released on line. Checked the Ryerson Index in the hopes some one may have picked him up and sure enough there is a death notice in the Sydney Morning Herald for him Late of Pymble My question is, does any one know of this person and if so, I would be most pleased to get in contact with any related family, as the son forms part of the Williams tree of Hobart, Thanks for anything, Elaine in Melbourne

    3. Hi Colleen, My TANNER family descended from John Henry TANNER (1809-1891) and Catherine DELANEY who married in Melbourne 2 Oct 1842. Francis Joseph was their grandson. John's parents were Henry TANNER and Martha DENYER from Horsham, Sussex, England. I have not found any reference to the name TENNER. Sorry. 1. [AUS-NSW] Proof of widowhood
    2. Gloria Hargreave
    3. Could some kind Lister please tell me if when a widow or widower was remarrying ( mid 19th century) would proof of death of previous spouse be required? If so, what? We are searching for the death of an ancestor Thomas Hampton between his arrival in Australia in 1855 and his wife remarrying in Mudgee in 1858. We have not found a death registration. Another question is ' why would she marry in a private home using a Methodist Minister, when she was supposedly C/E. She remarried twice, once in 1858 and again in 1872. I understand there was an encumbant C/E minister at this time. Can anyone tell me anything about the bushranger Thomas Hampton...his family origins rather than his exploits, which are well documented.

    1. Re: [AUS-NSW] Passenger list for the "Medway" 1847
    2. Barbara OConnor
    3. Congratulations! I've discovered that there was quite a lot of movement from one port to another and I suspect that many people knew exactly where they were heading before they even left home. I have one family who sailed from Dublin to Melbourne, then two days later boarded a ship to Sydney, then another to Newcastle, and on to the Maitland area where they remained. So, yes, it definitely does pay to check out other states. Cheers

    3. Hi List, Found the SCOTT family arriving in Adelaide on the ABBERTON from Londen then Plymouth 1 Sep 1846, arrived Port Adelaide on 13 Dec 1846. It even lists them by name!! So they arrived in Adelaide then went on the MEDWAY to NSW. I have spent years looking for them and thanks to Jules who has opened the door for me, goes to show to check other states for arrivals. regards Kerry

    3. Did you get this information from the Mariners in Australian Waters site? If you look at the scans page of the documents (click on the red Scan for first, red 2 for the second) you will see the Medway sailed from Adelaide carrying copper, and that the Scott family were the only steerage passengers. They didn't seem to be too fussy about keeping records of inter-port passengers. You might have to look in SA for immigration records. Cheers Barbara

    3. Hi List, Would anyone on the list have a passenger list of the "Medway" I have been given a great lead for my SCOTT's from Julie, which after years of searching I am ecstatic, it is recorded in the Bathurst Pioneer Register that William SCOTT and family arrive 1848 Free on the "Medway". I have searched the internet and found an arrival for the "Medway" 3 Jan 1847 on board Mr. & Mrs. SCOTT 4 daughters and 1 son in steerage. I am pretty sure this is my SCOTT's but would like to know if there is any further info on the actual passenger list. Thanks in advance Kerry

    3. Hi Kevin & Marg Thank you for the information, as you says a bit of work but great that you can work it down to the actual date. Jo Qld -----Original Message----- From: aus-nsw-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-nsw-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Clartiere Sent: Sunday, 28 February 2010 11:32 PM To: aus-nsw@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [AUS-NSW] Qld BDM Index- Petty Hi Jo & Marg It's more work to search for a record, because as Marg says you have to put in a range of full dates. Though you don't have to enter leading zeros. But, the fact that you have to enter a full date means that the database is now indexed on the actual date of the event. As such, it means you can discover the date without having to purchase the certificate. Here's an example, using a search for Arthur Albert SHAMBLER whose registration number is 1890/5679. Once you know the year, search using just that year. 1/1/1890 to 31/12/1890. The record is found (though be aware that events towards the end of a year may have been registered in the following year, in which case this search will say 'not found'. Simply try 1/1/1889 to 31/12/1889 for example). Then try a 6-month period. In this example a search on 1/1/1890 to 30/6/1890 found the record again. Then try a 3-month period. 1/1/1890 to 31/3/1890 failed, and hence the event occurred between 1/4/1890 and 30/6/1890. Once you have the quarter, find the month. 1/4/1890 to 30/6/1890 worked, as did 1/5/1890 to 30/6/1890. But 1/6/1890 to 30/6/1890 failed, so the event took place in the previous month. Next, try a fortnight. I entered 1/5/1890 to 15/5/1890 and the event was found. Next, a week. I entered 1/5/1890 to 7/5/1890 and again the week was found. How you proceed from here is up to you but I usually work day to day within a week. The event was found in the period 6/5/180 to 7/5/1890, but failed on 7/5/1890 to 7/5/1890. Hence Arthur was born on 6 May 1890. So, although you have to do extra work, the new system does have offer you something in return. Just wish NSW would change their database too :-) Just a point. When narrowing down your range of dates, only change one or other of the Search from and Search to dates at a time. Good luck.
