One was in Gloucester Goal 30 Sep 1828 and whose age was given as 19 and born in Malmesbury. The other was transported 4th March 1828 on the Phoenix arriving in NSW about Nov that year. He was sentenced to 7 years at the Wilts Assizes. So I can confirm in my own mind that the information is correct and that they are different people is anyone able to help with anything about the Joseph PIKE who was transported in the Phoenix? 1. [AUS-NSW] conditional purchase of land 1860's
    2. Suzanne England
    3. Hi all, I have a record of a conditional purchase of 40 acres of land in the "district of Wellington", notably not Parish or County, in 1864.( with an ID and conditional purchase No.). The earliest parish map I can find online for the area I believe my gt grandfather may have been living at this time, is 1884, in the parish of Merinda, County of Wellington. I have been to the LPMA archives in Sydney on one occasion, but unfortunately had little help from the front desk on where to search. I may have not been armed with all the information necessary to get some guidance. Does anyone know whether there would be more information available on this type of land purchase, for example, a more exact location? I would also appreciate any helpful hints on how to get the best out of your visit to the LPMA before making the trek. Many thanks to anyone who may have time to respond seeing it's the hurly burly lead up to Christmas! Cheers Sue

    3. Hi all I wondered if the latest podcast from the National Archives (UK) might be of interest Description Published date: 30 November 2012 Between 1803 and 1853 some 67,000 convicts were transported from England and Ireland to the British penal colony of Van Diemen’s Land, later renamed Tasmania. Using a detailed reconstruction of 278 voyages (82 carrying female convicts and 196 male) this talk explores the impact of trans-oceanic forced removal on the health and well being of these unwilling migrants. Hamish Maxwell-Stewart teaches history at the University of Tasmania and is the current holder of the Keith Cameron chair of Australian history, University College Dublin. He is the author of a number of books including Closing Hell’s Gates (2008), American Citizens British Slaves (2002) and Chain Letters (2001). 3. Hi Josephine, Thank you for this. To give you some background Margaret STEELE was my Great Uncle's step daughter. Presumably they remained close after her mother's death as she was mentioned in his death notice along with a Jim who I am yet to identify. My Great Uncle lived in Sydney for a short time but returned to New Zealand after the death of his wife Christina in 1930. I have found my Great Uncle and his second wife on passenger list from Wellington to Sydney in 1950. I don't know whether this trip was a one off or a regular occurrence although when he died in 1972 he left the contents of his bank account in Sydney to Margaret. Incidentally Ian Kenneth most likely got his second name Kenneth from my Great Uncle whose name was Kenneth KENNEDY. I don't currently have a subscription to Ancestry but I would be keen to make contact with anyone who would have known Kenneth during his time in Sydney. The owner of the tree at ancestry may not be closely related but at this stage this is all that I have to go on. If anyone is able to help in this respect it would be appreciated. 3. The National Trust has a listing of New South Wales cemeteries which have come under their notice. It is very useful if you know the general location of a burial but aren't sure of the cemetery name or what local government area it comes under (the local council is often responsible for its maintenance and will hold some records of interment/cremation). It is described at: http://www.nationaltrust.com.au/conservation/cemeteries/masterlist/default.asp and searchable at: http://www.nationaltrust.com.au/conservation/cemeteries/masterlist/database-search.asp You can view the whole list, or search by LGA or locality etc. Regards
