Hi Dianna I think the SMH does only go up to 1954 but if you have a Reader's Ticket to the State Library or National Library, not sure which one, you may be able to look at the SMH online. Good luck in your search. Cheers Joan Hi Joan I did find her Emma Thompson on the Ryerson index, not on Trove as yet. Would be interesting to see this, will check it out next time I'm in the library. Perhaps then I will be able to make a connection. Maybe more of my family came out from Scotland. Many thanks Dianna
HI again Joan I could not find any newspapers on TROVE that go up to 1955?? SMHerald seems to end at 1954. Not sure if that is correct. Dianna

Hi Dianna I've always assumed that the numbers grouped together for the same name would be in the same household, but I'm not sure...perhaps another lister may be able to verify this. It was shown as Herbert on the roll. Perhaps Emma is a niece! As you know her married name could you look for a death/funeral notice and search the newspapers TROVE to see if anything or anyone is named at her funeral? Cheers Joan HI Joan Thanks very much for that am I to assume then (do you think) that Emma Bridget and Herbert (should be Hubert) are sharing the same household?? Ellen is my GGGrandmother and Elizabeth and Hubert Gavin are her children, don't know how Emma fits in though. Kind regards Dianna

I only have the 1903 Electoral Roll Dianna, but it shows for CHARLES at Parramatta Elizabeth Roll No 931, Parramatta Domestic Duties Ellen No 932 Western Road Parramatta Domestic Duties Emma Bridget No 933 Church Street Parramatta Domestic Duties Herbert Gavin No 934 Church Street Parramatta Weaver Hope this helps. Joan Hi Everyone I'm doing research on Emma CHARLES who was born in Hartley NSW, to Thomas and Ellen in 1881. Emma married George W. THOMPSON in Sydney in 1909 I've been curious to know if there is a connection with my Charles family as Emma appears on the electoral rolls living with (or near) my GGGrandmother Ellen Charles in Parramatta. So this was before her marriage to George Thompson. If someone could kindly look for me on the old electoral rolls to see if I have this correct I would be very grateful. Kind regards Dianna

Hi Ann and listers First, please remove or clip extraneous material when replying to a post ESPECIALLY if you are replying to the Digest message. Patient records of Gladesville and other hospitals are held by NSW State Records (SR). They tend not to be digitised and online. SR have produced an "Archives in Brief" which contains all the relevant information - AIB 85 http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/state-archives/guides-and-finding-aids/archives-in-brief/archives-in-brief-85 After you have read all of that, go to the Agency detail which contains well researched information about the agency and its functions: Agency number: 65 Title: Tarban Creek Lunatic Asylum (1838-68) / Gladesville Hospital for the Insane (1869-1914) / Gladesville Mental Hospital / Gladesville Hospital (1915-93) Start date: 19 Nov 1838 End date: 29 Jan 1993 Category: Psychiatric Hospital http://investigator.records.nsw.gov.au/Entity.aspx?Path=\Agency\65 >From there you will see what records are held and how to access them. Make a note about which ones have an index or other finding guide.: http://investigator.records.nsw.gov.au/Entity.aspx?Path=\Agency\65\Series\Creating To access the records you will need either to travel to the SR Reading Room or hire a professional researcher to do that for you. If the person was committed after some public incident, you may find some information in the Sydney Morning Herald or other newspapers. Hi Joan, Yes I am aware that the passenger lists are online and I already have copies. I was specifically after any additional information relating to their arrival. These are separate records entitled "ships papers" Descriptive note: The papers are arranged chronologically by ship and include such items as certificates of arrival, health reports, tenders, lists of immigrants leaving the ship without formal engagements, copies of contracts between immigrants and employers, and matrons' diaries. These items have not been digitised. However in scrolling down the page there appears to be a list of the ships to which these papers relate and the voyage of the Samuel Plimsoll that I am interested in is not listed. I am assuming that this may mean that there is no additional information but I would welcome any comments from anyone who has previously used this resource. Greetings Ann This may not be of much help but you never know so here goes If you google burials at Gladesville hospital you will find an SMH article about those buried there you may find that this article gives some clues about how to find other data sources about the hospital I my search for burials into the Balmain Catholic cemetery, I purchased six death transcriptions which showed the place of burial as Gladesville Hospital, if you email the name of the person you are researching, I will have a look. it's a lond shot but you never know all the best Patrick Email [email protected]
