    3. Hi Samantha, My husband has an ancestor who drowned off Newcastle in 1875 in a ship wreck. A death certificate was issued a few weeks later although a body was never found. Of the 18 crewmen only one body was found. it might have depended on whether there was family to push the issue of a certificate. Bye, Rosemary

    3. Hello Samantha, Just in case you haven't seen this site, there is a list of the crew and passengers who lost their lives, but unfortunately nothing sounds like your James but as it mentions a lot were unidentified. http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/state-archives/guides-and-finding-aids/nrs-lis ts/nrs-4332#a Joan Hi Hoping someone knows a bit about marine deaths records. I am researching one of the crew of the Dunbar wrecked off Sydney in NSW - James Auchterwind (Auchterlonie). I have checked Ancestry Australian Deaths and NSW BDM Historical Indexes under both names (and wildcard at Ancestry) and nothing shows up in the death indexes. If the body was not recovered does this mean no death was recorded? What was the policy in those days? Thanks Samantha --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! 3. Go to the Aust Nat Library website 'Trove' & search & read the newspapers after that date. Unfortunately too many deaths that went to inquest & coroners reports didn't get a death cert. 3. Thanks, Col I know the captain's death was recorded at NSW BDM and possibly some of the passengers. I notice my chap doesn't appear on any of the passenger & crew lists, yet his death was reported in the Fife Herald as James Auchterlonie, able seaman, although other newspapers reported the crew list as 'James Auchterwind, O.S. (ordinary seaman)'. The name, address and occupation of his father matches my details, so I know it's the right guy. I guess 'lost at sea' didn't rate a death cert in those days unless there was a body. I believe there is a memorial at Camperdown Cemetery.
