As mentioned last week we are in the process of a major move! We have moved now, but the computer is still in a box with a lot of other Family History News stuff, so I will do my best to put out a short newsletter! NEW RELEASES FROM ARCHIVE CD BOOKS The Beauties of England & Wales - Middlesex Illustrated with engravings this book by Norris Brewer gives a historical description of every place in Middlesex. Eton College Register (1441 - 1698) This Eton College Register has fantastic detail about those who attended the college between 1441 and 1698. The Matriculation Roll of the University of St. Andrews, Edinburgh 1747-1897 In addition to the matriculation roll, this excellent book has information about the history of the university, together with early engravings and photographs Bailliere's New South Wales Gazetteer and Road Guide 1870 This is the 2nd edition of this important 19th century gazetteer. It contains 'the most recent and accurate information on every place in the colony'. The Sydney University Calendar 1887 Old university calendars contain a wealth of information on people associated with the university as well as an insight into the courses of study offered and university life and culture generally. New South Wales Educational Gazette: The New South Wales Educational Gazette was issued monthly and contains a wealth of information for family, local and educational historians Yewen's Directory of Landholders New South Wales, 1900 This a wonderful, extensive guide to over 70,000 landholders throughout NSW, by district and postal address. New South Wales Public Service List 1934 A list of over 6000 Officers permanently employed on 31 December 1934 by the Government of New South Queensland Post Office and Official Directory 1903 The 1903 edition of Wise's Queensland Post Office Directory is the only complete Directory of the whole State published for this particular year. Letters from Victorian Pioneers: In 1853 Lieutenant-Governor La Trobe addressed a circular letter to a number of early settlers requesting information as to the time and circumstances of the first occupation of various parts of the colony. This book is a collection of those responses to that circular. Melbourne and Suburban Directory 1865 The full title is "Sands and McDougall's Melbourne and Suburban Directory for 1865 containing street, alphabetical, and trade directory Melbourne and suburbs, together with a miscellaneous directory of useful information". Ballarat and Ballarat East Directory 1865-66 The full title is "Ballarat and Ballarat District Directory including Buninyong, Browns, Clunes, Creswick, Smythesdale and Scarsdale for 1865-66" Compiled by F.M. Dicker. Ballarat and District Directory 1904 "The publishers have much pleasure in placing this, the first section of a complete Ballarat and District Directory, containing the name and address of every person over the age of 21 years, (male and female) in Ballarat West, Ballarat East, Sebastopol and Buninyong, together with other useful information. This is the first work of its kind ever issued in any provincial City of Australasia." Bendigo Electoral Roll 1922 Electoral Rolls are the nearest thing Australians have to census records, at least at the start of the twentieth century, and hence, they are both extremely important, and useful. Tasmania Post Office Directory 1903 The 1903 edition of Wise's Tasmania Post Office Directory is divided into three main sections: Towns, Alphabetical and Trades and Professions. Western Australia Post Office Directory 1905 The 1905 edition of Wise's Western Australia Post Office Directory is divided into three main sections: Towns, Alphabetical and Trades and Professions Archive CD Books homepage - http://www.archivecdbooks.com WEBPAGE REVIEWS http://mywebpage.netscape.com/margotsdream/Poppelwell.htm A nice little website dealing with the descendants of William Poplewell of Whitby in North Yorkshire. What I particularly liked about this website was the very good use of graphics, and pictures to illustrate this simple family tree. There is also a lot of live information about each generation, rather than just the dry dates of birth, marriage and death. It is nicely laid out, although maybe the page could have been split a bit to ease navigation. You will find more information about certain members of the family at the bottom of the page, which expands with stories about people and places. A nice website http://www.heraldry-scotland.co.uk/Homepage.htm This is the website of the Heraldry Society of Scotland and is absolutely packed with loads of interesting, and at times extremely useful information about Heraldry in Scotland, and about the Society in particular. If you have an interested in Heraldry, and an interest in Scotland then this site will be fantastic for you. It gives and introduction into heraldry, and into where to find more information. Extremely well organised and nicely designed I found this website fascinating, and really pleasurable to browse. http://www.geocities.com/clanpeacock/ This website, calling itself Clan Peacock, is in reality a family history of the Peacock name in Scotland. Where it differs from a lot of websites pertaining to a single family is that there are a lot of resources on this site for the Peacock name in general. On the site I found indexes to Scottish Peacock Births, Deaths and marriages, as well as information on all sorts of people, from murderers to law abiding citizens! It is a nice website, easy to move around and containing some very useful information, my only quibble is the blue of the background which could make the text hard to read in places CERTIFICATES No Certificates this week, I will catch up with these in the next few weeks, but please note, from now the address to send certificates to is Rob Thompson, GFHN, 6 Sinclair Road, Shurdington, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, GL51 4SG Hopefully this will remain the same for some time! Mail from Chelmsford is being redirected so dont panic if you have sent something there! READERS QUERIES I am looking for anybody who knows anything about my late mother-in-law DORIS MAY BROWN, born in Effingham [we think] Surrey, on 20/21 AUGUST 1920. She was always very guarded about her past. I know she had a mother who died when she was about 7 yrs old and only learned after her mothers death of her 2 older brothers KENNETH and ALFRED, who we believe joined the army and nursing professions respectively. There is no mention of the father. She also appears to have been close to an Aunt, affectionately referred to as 'Ninky' who we believe to be her mothers sister. She appears to have had a privileged upbringing receiving swimming and tennis lessons at Hampton Court. She trained and briefly became a nurse, she married several times: Husband No 1 was a DAVIES [welsh] married on or around 1939/40/41 whom we believe was a professional soldier there was one son from this marriage called Melvin John DAVIES born on 2 November 1941. Husband 2 was a FREDERICK FEIST [my husband's father] and from this point on we know where she was. Any help, no matter how small would be much appreciated. SO I thank you in anticipation. GLYNIS FEIST volunteersupport@btclick.com I'm brickwalled by my G-Grandparents. Their marriage certificate gives the following information: Married in St. Barnabas' church, parish of St. Luke, Registration District of Holborn, Middlesex, July 16th 1871: William Michael Canny, of full age and Rebecca Bowers Blake, minor. With no ages, I haven't yet been able to trace their birth details, using Familysearch and FreeBMD although it seems clear that Rebecca must have been born between 1850 and 1855 neither appear yet on either site. Short of travelling to the Family Records Centre (not easy) and searching through all the Birth Indexes one by one until I find them, is there any other avenue I might try? Mike Canny mike.canny@ntlworld.com I am looking for information on my gggrandmother Margaret Jones born in 1832-1833 in Towyn, Wales Also born in Llangelynin, Merioneth Wales. Which one is right I do not know She married John Owen in 1857 in Towyn, they had a son William E Owen. My infor is Margaret died in 1872 in Dolgellau District, Merioneth Wales.
