AUS SHIPPING http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au/ Mary Ann Warner's Mariners and Ships in Australia (Ships, Crew and Passengers to Sydney 1850-1900) is now host to a staggering list of records thanks to a wonderful crew of volunteers. AUS TAS Longford – from the Tas Mailing list. The Library at Longford has a small local history section, (when last in there it consisted of a 4 drawer filing cabinet only) however it does hold copies of the church records of several of the churches in Longford and surrounding areas, and a large collection of "Family Files" which are a collection of newspaper clippings, letters etc relating to local families. For details on opening hours and location visit http://www.statelibrary.tas.gov.au/branch/longford.htm There are now 4 cemeteries in Longford. The general or Lawn cemetery is a modern one so would be much too late for what you are after. The Longford Methodist Cemetery opened in 1857 with John Palmer buried there after his death 14 Jan 1857. I have a copy of the surviving list of those interred in that cemetery. Christ Church Cemetery is the Anglican church in the centre of town. I am unsure of the exact opening date of this cemetery but the church opened in 1839. The minister would have more details. Contact him via http://www.anglicantas.org.au/directory/p-longfordperth.html The Catholic Church is also an early Church and Cemetery I don't have the dates for it but details could be obtained from the Parish, contact via http://www.hobart.catholic.org.au/parishes-kings-meadows.htm (note Longford is now part of the Parish of Kings Meadows). The Tasmanian Family History Soc has transcribed all surviving headstones in the Longford cemeteries so a check of TAMIOT will soon tell you if the headstone is still readable (or was in 1980 - 2000 when the transcripts were done and checked) and which cemetery it was in. For a list of all the cemeteries in the greater Longford district recorded in TAMIOT go to http://www.southcom.com.au/~gensocbb/TAMIOTls.html A variety of church records are also held in the Launceston Branch of the TFHS that relate to Longford, Perth, and Cressy areas. Details of the Library are at http://www.users.bigpond.com/ltntasfh/index.html however they are closed for part of December and January for Christmas Holidays. The Launceston Branch of the State Library also has records relating to the Longford district. ENCYCLOPEDIA The following article is from Eastman’s Online Genealogy Newsletter and is copyright 2004 by Richard W. Eastman. It is re-published here with the permission of the author. Information about the newsletter is available at http://www.eogn.com Encyclopedia of Genealogy Last week I announced a new, free online service for genealogists, called the Encyclopedia of Genealogy. This is a project I have been working on for a few weeks. While I’m the person who created the "shell" of this new service, much of the information within it is written by newsletter readers, such as yourself. If you missed last week's announcement, you can read it at http://eogn.typepad.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2004/12/encyclopedia_of.ht ml. I must admit that I am quite pleased with the first week of operation. A couple dozen newsletter readers have offered new content or have corrected existing information within the Encyclopedia of Genealogy. Here is a partial list of some of the articles added or updated by newsletter readers and myself within the past week: AASP Abstract Acadian Dit Names Acadian French-Canadian Name Variations AGLL Ague ahnentafel American Society Of Genealogists Ancestral File APG Apoplexy Association of Genealogists and Record Agents Association of Professional Genealogists in Ireland Association of Professional Genealogists Association of Scottish Genealogists and Record Agents Australasian Association of Genealogists and Record Agents Australia: Geraldton Family History Society Avoirdupois Banns BCG Blank U.S. Census Extraction Forms in Microsoft Excel BLM Board for Certification of Genealogists Cajun Genealogy CALS Canadian Federal Census Dates Census Record Census Records - United States Chambre Syndicale des Généalogistes Chinese Genealogy Civil War Service Records Computer Genealogy Society of San Diego Consanguinity Consort d'Aboville Numbers Dawes Rolls Dit Names DNA dsp dspm Dutch Genealogy FASG Federation of Family History Societies Grand Army of the Republic Henry Numbers Illinois Vital Statistics Online International Genealogical Index Intestate Jacobus, Donald Lines Land Entry Files of the General Land Office Maine Genealogical Society Maine: Penobscot County Genealogical Society Military Pension Records Mills, Elizabeth Shown National Genealogical Society NEHGS New England Historic Genealogical Society Nova Scotia, Yarmouth County research PERSI Relict Shropshire Family History Society Social Security Death Records Sources and Citations SSDI The American Genealogist United Kingdom Census Dates US Federal Census Dates The above list is only about half of the items added in the past week, but it should give you an idea of what the Encyclopedia of Genealogy is all about. Of course, there is plenty of room for more information, so feel free to add more! It is easy to do so. The Encyclopedia of Genealogy is available to everyone, free of charge. You can access it at http://www.eogen.com. If you would like to check "what's new" on the Encyclopedia, go to http://www.eogen.com and click on CHANGES in the upper-right corner.
