Hello, I was hoping someone may have access to old newspapers in the Townsville area as I am looking for any information that may have been printed about a JOHN INSTANCE who died 26 June 1896 he was supposed to have been run over by a tram at Hermit Park he was seen by a Dr. W BACOT on 23 June so this seems to imply that he lived for a while after the accident. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Kathy Boggan Find local movie times and trailers on Yahoo! Movies. http://au.movies.yahoo.com
Dear Kathy, I am interested in your posting as I am something of a tram buff, and I have driven trams in Brisbane and Melbourne. I have a book called " Tramways of Australia" and I can say with some certainty that Townsville has never run trams. My mother and I were both born there though I was raised in Brisbane and I had never heard her speak of trams. To my knowledge Rockhampton is the furthest north trams ever advanced. This does of course raise an ambiguity. Trains are sometimes called trams also. This is often the case with the small loco's used on the cane fields. Sydney also had "trams" that were powered by steam locomotives. The main rail line north is actually the boundry between Hermit Park and Railway Estate so I feel safe in saying that the accident was more likely caused by a "train". Perhaps you could try approaching Qld Rail for information. Hi Kathy, Howard & AUS-NQ listers, I have heard of trams in Townsville, but can't think where I heard or read these details just at the moment. I think though that these trams are not the passenger variety you are thinking of from down south, but more likely to be sugarcane, mining or cargo trams that were used. Annette, Townsville. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Howard Bailey" <hab1945@ihug.com.au> To: <AUS-NQ-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, April 21, 2004 12:19 AM Subject: Re: Tram Accident > Dear Kathy, > > I am interested in your posting as I am something of a tram buff, and I have > driven trams in Brisbane and Melbourne. > > I have a book called " Tramways of Australia" and I can say with some > certainty that Townsville has never run trams. Hi Cathy, I agrees with what Howard says about there being no trams as such, in Townsville. I have lived here most of my life and have never heard of them. I think it is more likely referring to what were called Rail Motors which plied between Townsville and other close towns. They were tram-like and carried passengers only. Though whether they would have been around in 1896 I don't know. The other problem you have is that the early papers of Townsville are not indexed and are only available on microfilm. What paper the accident might have been reported in and whether copies have survived is another problem. I know that the public libraries have filmed copies of most papers, but don't have the resources to be able to trawl through them to find particular items. However, the State Library of Queensland also has copies of Townsville papers, so it might be worthwhile to approach them. They have an online reference service on their website at www.slq.qld.gov.au so might be prepared to help. Whether they would charge for the service, I don't know. If they can't help you, I might be able to look on my next trip to the Library, but I don't know when that will be, it could be quite some time. Let me know if you need me to try for you. Hope this helps, Jenny in Townsville ----- Original Message ----- From: "Howard Bailey" <hab1945@ihug.com.au> To: <AUS-NQ-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, April 21, 2004 12:19 AM Subject: Re: Tram Accident Dear Kathy, I am interested in your posting as I am something of a tram buff, and I have driven trams in Brisbane and Melbourne.
