    1. Re: Dredge Family, Thursday Island
    2. The O'Donoghues
    3. Hi Ken, today I looked up the PO Directories for Thursday Island and found the following entry: Mrs F.W. Dredge, Picture Show Proprietor. First entry was in 1920-21 and the last entry for her was 1930-31 I searched our photo collection to see if there was a photo of the theatre (if any) but did not find any - also looked up a history of Thursday Island, but found no record there. We have come to the conclusion that Mrs Dredge may have conducted her "pictures" in a hall such as the Victoria Memorial Institute Hall (the Town Hall) Douglas Street, erected in 1901. You might like to know that all residents of Thursday Island were ordered complete and immediate evacuation of the Island in WW 2 - on 28 January 1942. They were given one days notice and could only take what they could carry. They all embarked on the liners Zealandia and Ormiston for destinations in southern centers as far as Brisbane. Armed forces personnel occupied the hastily vacated homes. Hope this helps, Judy - for Cairns Historical Society. > > We are seeking any leads for info on Thursday Island residents named > Dredge. > My grandfather Graham Dredge went missing in Western Australia in 1910 > after periods of employment at Broome with a pearling company, as an > accountant. > We are tracking the family links and have learned of a family named > Dredge which resided on Thursday Island, with four sons who were in > World War II. > Any knowledge or leads will be appreciated.
