AUS Mary Ann Warner has just uploaded new crew and passenger lists into Sydney 1854 - 1879.These include ships and passengers out of Launceston, Hobart, and Circular head etc.(to Sydney, or enroute to other ports). http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au/shipdate.htm Mary Ann's work is voluntary, and is hosted by the NSW Government. You can view the transcribed lists, as well as the ORIGINAL passenger/crew list. This is a brilliant resource for Australian genealogy, and Mary Ann welcomes anyone who has a spare hour who would like to help transcribe a list. They are easy to do, and Mary Ann helps you with the process. So if you have been considering volunteering for a project, Mary Ann would love some help. There are already a team of volunteers helping, but extra hands would be great. If you wish you can pick a month of any year where you think family arrived, and just transcribe a certain number of ships if you wish. Ship's arrived at Sydney from both intercolonial and international ports. These passengers and crew are arriving from overseas as well as from interstate. They also include stowaways, deaths at sea etc. The lists include the occupation and ages of seamen. If May Ann can complete the pre 1900 era, she is going to move on to ships after this time, so it is to the benefit of all that these lists are made available on time. In addition to the collection of over 400 scanned directories available on the Database Computers, we have now put on open access more than 70 directories on microfiche. They can be found in the Surname Index Area. Another collection of more than 300 historical directories can be accessed via our Online Resources PCs and on the internet at: www.historicaldirectories.org/ Naturalization Records on PROCAT The National Archives Online Catalogue (PROCAT) provides access to a wealth of information about the resources available at Kew. As part of the Citizenship Project, the descriptions from the printed indexes to records of naturalization from 1844 to 1935 have been uploaded onto PROCAT. This enables users to search by full name of applicant (and alias), nationality, certificate number, date of certificate, and (for cases after 1878, place of residence). A successful search will identify the full document reference for the background papers which can reveal fascinating facts about our immigrant ancestors and their early years in this country. Especially good for us South of the Bombays! She replied the same day and research was done and posted by the next. Wow. Christine Barbour The library has a research charge of $20.00 per half hour. If the research takes less than 15 minutes it would cost a flat $10.00. If you wished to do the research yourself you could purchase a day access card for $10.00 It is advisable to book a reader printer after you arrive to ensure a printer is available after you find what you want to copy. SCT ARTICLE http://news.scotsman.com/scotland.cfm?id=451542004 USA SSDI EXPERT ADVICE: SOCIAL SECURITY SCOOP The Social Security Death Index (SSDI) is a database of deaths reported to the Social Security Administration (SSA). Social Security started in the 1930s, but the SSDI wasn't computerized until 1961--so the bulk of its entries are deaths occurring after that year. SSDI has other limitations: It lists only deaths the SSA found out about from beneficiaries' survivors, and it excludes people with certain occupations, such as railroad workers. The good news about SSDI is you can search it for free online. And once you've found someone in the SSDI, you can request his SS-5 Social Security application form from the SSA (visit http://www.ssa.gov/foia for instructions).
