    3. Hello Joy, While following the adventures of Othello Barratt,1868 to 1871 have you considered the following: The discovery of gold at Gympie in 1867 led to others in the district and period you are looking at, namely Cape Goldfield 1868, Gilbert and Percy Goldfield in 1869, Ravenswood in 1870, the Etheridge 1869-71. Gold was found on the Palmer River in August 1872, hence the founding of Cooktown. Daintree was not really "discovered"until about 1874 when Daniel Hart took a party of 7 men with the intention of "exploring for sugar lands, cedar and minerals". Any settlement before 1874 was unlikely due to fever and spearing by Aboriginals. Some cedar cutters could have been in the area but their exploits have never been recorded. Hope this helps Judy ----- Original Message ----- > >I am trying to fill in the missing years of Othello Barratt who landed > >Brisbane Nov.. 1861.
